Thanks for pointing that out. Although PC2-4200/DDR2-533 is somewhat dated (4 - 5 years old) I was able to find some other good deals after your directed me to Frys.com

As of this point in time, these all have free shipping.

Crucial PC2-6400/DDR2-800 2GB Kit (2 x 1GB) - $29.99 - $15MIR = $14.99 AR

Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400/DDR2-800 2GB Kit (2 x 1GB) - $45.99 - $30MIR = $15.99 AR

Crucial PC2-6400/DDR2-800 4GB Kit (2 x 2GB) - $74.99 - $40MIR = $34.99 AR

Corsair TwinX PC2-6400/DDR2-800 4GB Kit (2 x 2GB) - $69.99 - $25MIR = $44.99 AR

Rebate Hint: The rebates can sometimes be hard to find on the Frys website after they expire. I recommend that you download and save the file at time of purchase.

That Crucial 4GB kit is certainly looking sweet @ $35 AR.

They also have a PC8400/8500? for $70 AR.

What does it mean on the Crucial PC2-6400/DDR2-800 2GB Kit (2 x 1GB) - $29.99 - $15MIR = $14.99 AR that it's CL=6 ?
Is that 6-6-6-15 timings?

Something close to that--I think it's 6-5-5-15. I suspect that these modules are essentially the same as PC2-5300 modules @ CL=5. OCZ does the same thing with their "Vista Upgrade" modules, except that OCZ actually leaves the SPD value at 667MHz and you have to change the memory speed to 800MHz manually.

For what it's worth, Crucial rebates are slightly more convenient than Corsair rebates. Both take about eight weeks to send your check, but Crucial allows 30 days after purchase to send in the rebate, while Corsair only gives you 21 days (if you happen to wait that long). From past experience, I know that Crucial will allow you to resubmit a rebate if you make a mistake (I recently sent them the wrong UPC code because Fry's gave me PC2-4200 memory instead of PC2-5300 memory by mistake), but I'm not sure if Corsair will give you a second chance.

Alright, thanks for the info. I'm going to pass on that -- CL6 doesn't sound tempting to me.

how can you tell it's cl4? Fry's has no info about it whatsoever -- not even a product code.
The only hint is in the title -- 2.V, whatever that means. Probably 2.0V, which means I'm again not so interested -- it's only ddr2-800 when you pump up the voltage, just like the first one was only ddr2-800 when you loosen the timings.
Unless I'm reading it wrong?

Because both models listed on the rebate form are 4-4-4-12.

Edit: Well, the models are exactly the same as the ones I was looking at but they are close. Will check some more.

Edit #2: After searching more, looks like the CP in the part number is interchangable with KIT from other Crucial models (like those at Newegg). If that is truely the case, then both are 4-4-4-12 based on the Newegg specs.

As Engineer suggested, you can tell by looking at the rebate form, which contains very specific information:

UPC code: 649528 742575
Model number: BL2CP12864AA80a or BL2CP12864AA804
Name: Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400

With that information, you can look up the specs.

BL2CP12864AA80a and BL2CP12864AA804 are the model numbers of the individual modules. The model numbers of the 2x1GB kit are BL2KIT12864AA80A or BL2KIT12864AA804. I think the latter is an old version (I can't find it on Crucial's website), and the sources I have seen say that it requires 2.2V. I think the former is a newer version, and it does appear on the Crucial website:

http://www.crucial.com/store/p...odule=BL2KIT12864AA80A

The voltage requirement is 2.0 Volts.

I believe the difference between the two part numbers is that one comes in small box (like this picture) and the other one comes in plastic packaging that you can see through (like this picture).

I think the difference is more substantial than that. I have seen the memory with model number BL2KIT12864AA804 shipped in both kinds of packaging (the small box and the see-through plastic package). I have not seen model number BL2KIT12864AA80A shipped in the see-through plastic package, but that doesn't mean it has never been shipped that way.

More to the point, every source I have seen says that model number BL2KIT12864AA804 requires 2.2 Volts. For example:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articl...isplay/ddr2-800_3.html
(notice the packaging)

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/...sp?ProductCode=80061-9

On the other hand, Crucial's website (please refer to the link above) clearly states that model number BL2KIT12864AA80A requires only 2.0 Volts.

My conclusion: BL2KIT12864AA80A is a different revision.

Ok, thanks all for the advice. I'm actually looking for something for my Dell, so I have to stick to 1.8V.

In that case, get the Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400 PC2-6400 or the Corsair XMS2 DHX TWIN2X2048-6400C5DHX (if you have room for it). Corsair has been consistently offering a new rebate through Fry's every two or three weeks for the last few months. I've never had any problems with compatibility. Kingston ValueRAM is also highly compatible.

Thanks for the tips. Actually, the Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400 is 1.9V (link).
But the DHX TWIN2X2048-6400C5DHX would be fine if I could find it... Do you know how to find that on frys.com?

I think Frys.com is on crack. Or maybe you have to be on crack to use their site. I can't find jack over there.
I go to Hard Drives & Memory (wth? Hard drives and memory?), then Desktop Memory, it shows me "just a few Desktop Memory" options... and the only way to narrow down is by category... Apple??? DDR PC2100? The only DDR2 option is DDR2 PC4200.

They are on crack.

oh my gosh, I found it. I clicked on ddr2 pc4200 (obvious, right?) and it listed lots of different ddr2 and ddr3 options. (Choose the red pill or the blue pill...)

Anyway, I found the DHX TWIN2X2048-6400C5DHX for $25 AR + ship ($30 MIR).

thanks.
