Thanks very much .

I didnt actually insert the DDR1 RAM Module in my new i just thought the slots looked as if they lined upoul the same .

Cheers for the info .

I bought 2 x 1GB Corsair DDR2 XMS , So all i need now is a CPU .

Could anyone reccomend a Socket 775 CPU for around £100/$195.53 ?

The PC will be used for burning DVD's and storing Music / TV Shows , & Movies .

Basically a Media Center PC to plug into a HDMI Plasma TV , I dont like those little MicroATX Boards and Cube Cases .

I'd rather have room for more expansion of extra HDD etc .

It's strange, that you have 559 posts here on anadtech forums and you didn't knew that....

It doesn't really matter how many e2160 you can buy for the price of one 8400, because this last chip smokes them so very badly in every way you look at it.

With the exception of DVD or other video encoding, an 8400 is overkill for the prescribed usages. For $80 or so (vs $220 or so for E8400) , I'd buy and OC the E2160 and spend the rest on more data HDs if it was my system.

phpdog, what MOBO are you using?

Ive kinda been out of the whole computing thing for the last 2 years , just on and off , i started out overclocking AMD XP1700s and kinda stopped with computing at the point where overclocking didnt really make as much a difference as it used to

Because of all the whole Dual Core Quad Core and have only ever worked with AMD CPU's and DDR 1 RAM , so i was just curious .

I Bought an ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe Premuim .

Is it true that the ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe is not Core 2 Duo Compatible even with BIOS Update .

AND

That the I Bought an ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe Premuim IS Core 2 Duo Compatible .

Heres it link from where i bought the board

Here

[ Came from Japan FedEx within 2 days of Buying ] [ Bought a Stick of RAM from a guy live within 80 miles of me 2 weeks later still not arrive ]

Yes, it is NOT Core2Duo compatible (it is also NOT compatible with the Pentium e2xxx series, which are also Core2Duo-based)

Perhaps you made a mistake with the name of the board? I can't seem to find any info on a board with that exact name. The ASUS P5N32-SLI Premium, however, IS compatible with Core2Duo CPUs.

(Your ebay link is to an expired auction that isn't visible any more; however, the title of the auction is "ASUS P5N32-SLI DELUXE P4 SOCKET 775 MOTHERBOARD Premium", which would seem to be an ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe MB, which is NOT compatible with the Core2Duo)

My wife's uncle just made this mistake - attempted to install 2x 1 GB DDR2 sticks into an older Dell which only supported DDR(1). He noticed a 'burning' smell, and now the damn thing won't boot in any conceivable configuration (old ram or no ram) - is it likely the MB is fried? We're wondering how much we can salvage.

Me, I would buy one of the new e8400's

BTRY - his MB can't handle Core2Duos as it's a couple years old.
phpdog: I would try to find someone/someplace with a Pentium D 9xx series CPU for sale -- perhaps on ebay. Note that the latest Intel dual-core Celerons and Pentiums are based on the Core2Duo and will not work in your MB.
