DDR2 vs. DDR3 Question

So Ive been outa the PC game for a bit. However Im building a 2 new boxes. Box 1 is for playing Starcraft and a few other games (Left 4 Dead 2, and Diablo 3), its going to have a X3 720 processor. Box 2 is to be, running my old Phenom X4 9600 quadcore and it will be a server running Windows Server 2008, Its going to be hosting alot of vm's. Mainly for testing different things on different OS'es (server 2003, 2008, XP, 7 and other things). I plan to build both boxes in the next few weeks.

Here is my question. I currently have a PC running DDR2 that I am upgrading as well with new processor and Video card. My initial plan was to buy a new motherboard that supports DDR2 instead of DDR3 so that I can have all 3 machines running the same memory. I am having second thoughts now. Would I better better off buying the 2 new machines with DDR3 instead of DDR2? Im planning on getting 4GB for both the server and the gaming machine. I am thinking that in a few months I will most likely need to purchase another 4GB for the server.

Im in sort of the same pickle, I havent been following the current tech for a while.

I have an overclocked Athlon BE dual core and 6gigs of DDR2. I was considering briefly going to a phenom setup with DDR 2 so I could use all the ram Ive bought. 2 gigs were bought for $200 back when it was expensive. Then 4 gigs for like $30 when it was dirt cheap.

I think DDR3 has come down a lot recently and more and more is becoming the standard so soon DDR2 will be more expensive.

I game so little that I will wait another year or two when ram prices come down and I can move to ddr3 for a reasonable cost and have more capacity than what I currently have.

If you are buying the ram and mobo brand new, go DDR3. It is actually cheaper than comparable DDR2 now so there's no reason not to.
