I bought one of these back in late Dec 2008 from Dell Home. It was one of the unaffected models as it had CC1H firmware.

I'm in for my second. If you have a Dell credit account don't forget your extra 3% off.

Wow, they're just giving these drives away! Would still rather not chance any mishaps with the 7200.11 line though.

I really wish I could catch one of these deals that wasn't limited to 1 drive - I'm ready to put together a new raid, and I'd like 5 (or 6, to include a spare) identical drives. Unfortunately, all the recent drive deals I've seen have been max 1 - most don't seem to let you buy more than 1 drive even if you pass on the extra $5 or $10 discount...

Well if stopped crying about it and instead bought one from each deal, you would have them by now.

Maybe I'll have to get this.

EDIT: $112 shipped after tax. I'll pass for now.

buyer beware......
 :frown:
I have lost a lot of confidence with the Segate brand since their firmware debacle. I want to start getting parts for a Windows Home Server build, but I am not touching these...no matter what the deal.

Not quite crying...

If all the deals (or even a significant number) were for the same drive, I'd do that. Unfortunately, they aren't, and mixing drive types (even at the same size) can have really nasty performance consequences in a raid farm, especially for a high drive count raid 5...

At least no data was lost with the firmware problems. I switched to Seagate after too many failures with Maxtor (now owned by Seagate, I know) and then WD drives (even the supposedly heavy-duty server-class WD drives). Have not had a failure with a Seagate in 3+ years. The best I can say for WD is that at least their RMA procedure is quick and easy (have gone through it 4 or 5 times now), but I have stopped trusting their drives.

I have been using one in my WHS for a few months now without any ill affects. I checked the drive when I got it and it wasn't one affected, if it was a simple flash would have curred the ill. At least this is just a firmware thing that has been corrected, not a hardware issue.

I don't care if this costs $50. I'm not putting my data on a drive that's known to be flaky.

Didn't you have to apply the firmware to kill the Seagate drives, or did they just die? Why did people apply the update was it suppose to fix a big problem with the drive or was it just some little update?

the drive, or this deal?

I love Seagate hard drives, but I didn't feel safe enough to get this particular drive. This would have been my only source of backup, and thats a lot of data to lose.
