In for one. (I get a bit tired of slower transfers over the old 100 MBps switch) Thanks for the bing reminder. I'd have forgotten to do that.

Ive forgotten...whats the difference between this and a router? This is what comes after your cable modem right?

How does wireless come in? Im planning on moving into a house soon...maybe two floors. Im gonna need to figure out how to get everything wired (always have computers all over). Wouldnt hurt to buy equipment now if i need it and its a good price.

All this does is allow local traffic between you PCs. IE - Filesharing, streaming video from one of your local boxes on your XBox, etc.

A router takes an internet signal and allows devices behind it to communicate with the internet. Essentially, a router routes your internet traffic.

In for one... I have the 8 port, planning to wire my house, but realized it would be cheaper just to run one drop to my living room where there are 3 devices.

I have the 8 port hooked up like this:

Cable Modem>Router>8port switch

My router DHCP automatically assigns the IPs to the clients on the 8 port switch. I'm assuming it will do the same for the 5 port.

I'm glad to get my HTPC and Xbox off of wireless... and I'll finally be able to hook my blu-ray player up too.

Yes, your assumption is correct.

I have a Linksys 54G wireless router right now. It goes cable modem into wireless router, then out of router into my computer. My laptop connects wireless. I am putting two more computers in my house and want to connect them via wire as I'm not a big fan of wireless. Can I use my router as the "switch" so all my computers can talk to each other and access their files? I know it will only be 100 mbps vs 1000 with this switch but I don't think I need that much speed. Or do I need to buy a switch to connect all the PCs?

I don't mean to sound like a dick but how do you have ~940 post and do not know the answer to those questions???

To make up for my "dick" comment, the answer to your 1st question is 'yes'.

Well, you did sound like a dick, dick. (I kid!) It's kind of like, if you've never had to do it before in your life you don't know how to do it. I've built probably 30+ PCs in my life, sold them for 5 years at Circuit City, program a little etc. but have never, ever had to network computers together. I've never had a reason. Now that I am putting an HTPC together and a separate PC for my wife I want to have them all connected.

Most routers have 4 LAN connections on them. Only need a switch if you are going to add more PCs than that (or if you want the faster transfer rates, as most routers are only 100).

1. Go to http://www.bing.com/.
2. Type newegg in the search box. Make sure any ad blockers are turned off in your browser.
3. Results page should show an ad at the top (above the search results) that shows 10% cashback. Click on it.
