That's interesting but not surprising since nvidia cards are better in open gl, like their
decisive advantage in jedi academy. And since x800 xtpe is not available yet (like the
ultra), I'm thinking of getting the gt which should be in stock next week for 350 from
many an online retailer.

Has any human on this planet actually seen a PNY 6800 Ultra video card in person? Has anyone seen one from CompUSA? I see the status on their website now says sold out, so I'm hoping that means they got some and sold out, not "sold out in the sense that we have none to sell".

[EDIT] Just noticed that PNY's website shows they're shipping those bought through them tomorrow (the 29th).

no compusa never shipped an ultra, and i highly doubt if pny will ship soon, i think the earliest you'll get an ultra is not before sep-oct. happy dreams

well obviously some humans did see an ultra, like all the magazines and hardware review sites, which used them to do all the benchmarks you can find all over the web. But these might have been pre-production or oem versions, not full retail. Also some oc builders shipped PCs with ultras, but again mostly to hardware review sites and magazines, these models might not be readily available to consumers.

My next idea is to start a self proclaimed hardware review site so I can convince the hardware manufacturer to send me their stuff, possibly for free, way before the general public gets it.

Just an update here. I had a preorder on a 6800 GT card cancelled 1 day before my store got the cards in stock. So after being refused the card for the price I paid I filed a complaint with the BBB. A few days ago I got a letter from the Texas BBB (where CUSA is incorporated I guess) just saying they had received my complaint and were investigating my claim. Well, lo and behold today I was personally called by the g.m. at my local CompUSA and re-offered my original deal! I have to wait until the card is again in stock, but it looks like I'll finally get that $280 6800 GT! I always thought it was ridiculous how much they fought me over such a small amount, but at least they're making good in the end and I'll be happy to shop there again now (so in the end they win anyway). Score one for the BBB!

The CompUSA where my brother-in-law tried to get in on the 30% off Ultra deal officially screwed us today and refused to honor the "30-day Quote" they put the "Pre-Pay" on. The guy who made these representations when my B-I-L made the Pre-Pay denied remembering him in front of his manager despite the unusual nature of the transaction. The wouldn't downgrade to the GT @ 30% either. Basically exactly what I knew would happen, now I'm back at square one.

How bout you learn wtf you're talking about before you open your mouth. The restocking fee only applies to opened items returned for a refund, because guess what, the store can't sell those items any more on the retail floor. So they either have to mark them down and sell as open box or send them back to the vendor as "defective". In either case, the store loses money so that's why the restock fee is in place. I'm sick and tired of dumba$$es like you coming into work and bitching about the restock fee. Do you hear the CSR bitch to you about how they hate doing stupid people's returns all day and how that is poor customer behavior? I understand that there are some situations in which a restock fee should be waived, and I do it quite often, but you're pompous generalizations are rediculous in merit and quite frankly most people's idea of "customer service" is to let them rent an item til they realize they either don't want it or bought the wrong thing... 3 months down the road. Go shop at Gart Sports if you want that, electronics is a different industry!

I think what we have here is an example of why CompUSA is called CrapUSA. I used to shop there a lot from about 1990 or so. I stopped becase it was a drive for me, and had lousy service. I am willing to pay higher prices to get better service. Typical atitude from lousy custumer service rep.
