Usually retail has a longer warranty period, makes it easier to resale with the box, IDE cable, packaging and of course the pretty box

Obviously you have not paid attention to Maxtor retail drives warranties of late. They have changed to a standard 1 year warranty for retail drives and 3 years for OEM 120GB + in size with the 8MB cache.

That fancy box gets you less today than it used to. They figure most returns are from the retail market. And are looking out for the OEM channels more.

Unless of course you live in a third world country then you get up to three years on the retail drives. Go figure!

You are correct , I know they changed from 3 years to 1 year on most of the Retail drives but didn't realize they had increased the OEM warranty to 3 years on some of the larger drives (checked on Newegg). Thanks for pointing that out.

edit: According to Outpost, some of the bare drives that are 120+ gig and 8mb cache are still only one year warranty.

Not to thread-crap, but I've had to RMA two Maxtor (40gb, Diamond Max) drives in the last month and a half. They were still under warranty (with the old 3 year warranties), but this isn't doing much for my opinion on Maxtor. These are the only hard drives I've ever had stop working on me in over 10 years of home computing

I've read the horror stories about WD too! 8mb chache drives failing in 3months. I even had to RMA one WD drives, I've also RMA'd two IBM drives. (I've only owned 5 various hard drives in all).

So I think, in terms of reliability they are all about in the same boat.

You'll get RMA stories from all hard drive manufacturers. All it takes is one failed drive for someone to denounce one brand as unreliable.

Shock during transit I think has much to do with drives failing early. The kind of common mishandling that occurs during shipping certainly doesn't help the drive. I try to get my drives at B&M stores, but mishandling can occur during retail distribution too. I figure, though, chances are it's not going to be worse than deliverymen playing soccer with your package. When I hear a loud thump at my front door, I know the UPS guy was too lazy to lay the package on the floor and resorted to dropping it instead.
