Dead AGP slot?

Well, long story, but basically I finally got my first computer built, plugged moniter into agp card slot thingy, and moniter no turn on. I put in PCI card and it worked. (nvmrd that I fried my PSU by doing something stupid).

Well anyway, I'm getting a new PSU in like 2 days (shipping right now), and I am afraid that when I do get everything hoooked up again, that the AGP card wont work with the mointer again.

Basically, I don't know if the AGP slot is dead or not. I have heard things about booting up the PC with the PCI card, and enabling AGP? But I don't understand why the computer wouldn't default to that. I do not have another card to test it, but I can if I have to (I'd have to ask a clan member to send me one). I'd like to try other things first.

Are there ways to just looking to see if its fried? Thanks

yeah, try another card in the slot, or the card in another comp.

But it was shipped, right?

Might have died in shipping. It's worth a check.

"believe me"

The likeliness of dying AGP slots is highly unlikely. If you're not willing to attempt the installation of another AGP card, this thread is pointless. However, mobo's have their defect days, package damaging dates, and worse of all, glory of improper daughter card installations.

I can get another AGP card, it'll just have to be shipped to me, which is why I'd rather try to find another way of solving the problem.

I took a flashlight and looked at the slot, nothing looks messsed up or burned, and I also blew into it to get some dust out (if there was any).

I say I know it works b/c it was shipped in static free wrap, cardboard under the wrap (under the vid card), and with some newspaper to keep it from sliding around.

He was using the card just before he sent it to me (he upgraded, didn't need it).

MAYBE I didn't push it in all the way, but I pushed hard as I could (not literally) and it didn't seem like it'd go in anymore.

This is the mobo where Quintox unfortunately plugged it into a Dell-proprietary PSU and powered it up, I believe. It certainly deserves to be damaged after being cross-wired five different ways. Mobos can surprise ya though

Quintox, what brand, model and wattage of PSU are you using for your testing now, and what brand and model of video card are you trying? It might simply be that the PSU can't power the system plus the AGP card. Some cards draw more power than your CPU does.

That is a option in most bios, but ive found it means little or nothing and really don't see why they add it anymore

Ok, don't laugh about my new PSU. It is actaully better than my old 450watter (that one didn't even have a brand). I am getting a Fortron 350watt ATX350GU. Reviews were good on newegg, and fortron was rated high in toms hardware guide.

Video card, not sure of the brand, but its a 128mb 9600se. 350watts should EASILY power it up. My mobo doesn't look fried as I have said before. There are no bubbly things in the little silver cylinders (which I heard to look for) and nothing smells.

I hope to god I didn't fry the mobo, like I have said before, I never saw or smelled anything strange after doing anything. (dells PSU swap)

Considering I'm about to spend $3K on components to build my own, I'm a little nervous after reading this thread. How exactly would one "fry" his mobo other than doing something totally stupid? Don't the PSUs and Mobos come with instructions?

I did something stupid. Upped the voltage on the PSU to 220. Just don't do that and you'll be OK

You don't have anyhting to worry about as long as you don't start plugging proprietary dell sh!t into your awesome gear. You'll be fine.

I didn't ask what PSU you have on order, I asked what you're using in the meantime Your Fortron won't have a problem, but if you're using a junker in the meanwhile...?

So my computer is built but not in use (no PSU)
