DEAD: AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 San Diego 2.6Ghz Socket 939 - $139 @ Newegg!

I considered jumping in on this, but at $139 + $30 for a heatsink/fan, it comes out to the exact same price as a retail Athlon 64 X2 3800 which can be OC'd from 2.0 to 2.5 GHz with the stock cooler.. for everything but a select few non-mulitprocessor-aware apps/games it seems like the X2 would be a better choice, am I wrong on this one?

It depends on how much you plan onusing SLI. I for one never need to becuase nvidia has this nasty habit of coming out with a new single video card every 6 months that is faster than the previous generations SLI'ed cards. So it really depends. You can get a 7900GTO for $266 shipped at the Egg that doesnt require SLI and is plenny fast.

3Ghz>2.5Ghz. You will only notice a diff with the X2 in multi app situations...not games (yet)

And that is a $13 HSF.. not $30. I used some lame thermaltake I had on my Opti148 (cuz I took Mach 2 a part for new case and was in to big of a hurry to try and get the Freezer on there) and hit 3Ghz with ease.

What I was getting at is that the FX-55 @ 3.0 is only marginally faster than the X2 @ 2.5 for non-multithreaded applications, but the X2 smokes the FX-55 in games (Quake 3/4, CoD2, Oblivion, UT2007, Crysis, WoW, etc.) and apps that do take advantage of both processors. You also get the multitasking benefits inherent to dual-core setups for day-to-day Windows work with the X2, so I think it's worth the marginal difference in price.

If you play CS:S on high settings and resolution (especially widescreen), then 3.0ghz is a huge difference over 2.5ghz. Firefights that would lag a 2.5ghz down would look play noticeably better on a 3.0ghz cpu. The extra 512k L2 cache would give it a higher performance as well.

When reading through the newegg reviews on the Freezer 64 hsf, I came across a suggestion to buy this Sunbeam HSF instead. The review claimed they are the same, and they do appear to be by the photo. I've not used the heatsink (haven't even jumped on this deal yet), but passing along options for the oem version.

The new retail deal does seem very good to me. I might not be able to hold out any longer.

Can I use a stock AMD 939 heatsink that came with my x2 3800 on this FX55? I will be putting the FX in a temporary setup until after XMAS and the stock non heat pipe amd is all I have laying around. Probably won't OC until I move it to its' real home and will upgrade the sink then.

So, Opteron 165 or this FX-55? Machine is not going to be used as an Oblivion-type game machine by any stretch of the imagination....it's the wife's machine. Just want the most bang for the buck as a final upgrade for hers before I move her to C2D next year.

Got mine today .... is currently running at 2.8GHz (255x11) at default voltage with a Freezer 64 Pro. I'll run Prime95 all night tonight and if it survives I'll try taking it to 3.0 GHz tomorrow.
Sold my 3500+ Venice which would only reach 2.5GHz for $65 so it cost me an extra $74 to upgrade to this ........ a no-brainer! I think I'll hold off on Core 2 Duo untill next year now. The $139 promo is still on as of tonight, (just tried it). Tempted to buy another one .... must resist!

Mine won't run Prime95 at 2.80 GHz, period. I went as high as 1.475v and gave up. It's stable at 2.70 with 1.4v. On the chance that it might be because of a multiplier my motherboard doesn't like, I tried everything from 11 to 15, mild memory timings, dividers, etc. Temps were the same as my 4000+. I put the 4000+ back in, and all is good at 2.8 with 1.425v.

This is replacing my 3700+ San Diego that would not go over 2.5 gighz. Pissed me off; i even got a thermalright120 to hit try to hit around 2.8, but for no matter what I did, it will not do anything over 2.5 (prime will fail @ a hair above 2.5, but stable all day @ 2.5). I'll probably get a 10 fps boost lol. Not sure if it's worth it. I know my 120 HSF is good enough. I'm going to attempt 3.2 or higher, hopefully.

I'm going to sell my 3700+ on ebay. Hoping i'd get around $80-$100 for it.

Couldn't hit 3ghz with mine (13x230@1.6 would create errors in Prime95 after an hour). Testing out 2.9ghz (13x225@1.5) now... Using a Freezer 64 pro. Might just be my chip b/c everything else is 100% stable at HTT 230.

I got the Thermalright Ultra-120, not the xp-120. It's HUGE and BARELY fits in my case.
I got mine from where I always get my HSF's --> SVC.com. They don't have either in stock . you can try pctoys or coolerguys. I've had no problems with those sites in the past.







EDIT:
I hit 3 gighz easy. I was able to hit 3.2, but it was unstable in prime. I didn't want to put my Vcore over 1.55V. Currently priming away @ 3 gighz.
