DFI Ultra-D would be the way to go with this chip. It would allow you to OC it to it's full potential.

geez people. This (fx-55) chip is 1 of the best single core cpu's on the market (only the fx-57 beats it out). It beats all the regular AMD 64 single core cpu's hands down due to it's already high frequency, 1mb cache, unlocked multiplier, and being made from better materials like the Opteron. It beats all the Opteron single cores (w/ exception to the $650 Opteron 154), even the Opteron 152 (same clock) due to having the unlocked multiplier. And the price beats the Opteron 152 also.

Well, I'll tell you one that I've wondered for a while, though it's not such a big deal with this coupon. I've had a three friends buy the Socket 939 3700+, and all of them have been able to OC to 2.76MHz using the retail heatsink and fan. The current price on the 3700+ is $96 or $98.50 (depending on which one you buy).

Same L1 as the FX-55
Same L2 (1MB) as the FX-55
Same trace (90nm) as the FX-55
Save voltage range (1.35/1.4) as the FX-55

Normally, the FX-55 is more than DOUBLE the price of the 3700+, but overclocked the 3700+ will out preform it. The only advantage I see for the FX-55 is that it is not multiplier locked and does have a higher OC ceiling, but is that worth an extra $100? If you go back two or three months, the difference was several hundred dollars!

At this price though, I suppose I can see why it's worth the extra $40 to get the FX. If you aren't an overclocker, you instantly have a faster CPU. If you are an overclocker, you've got the potential for 200-400MHz more than a 3700+

But do you see my point in general about how at normal prices, the 3700+ is a better deal for the average person on these boards?

To be honest though, if I hadn't JUST (like last week) picked up a S754 3400+ combo that is now OC'ed to 2.8GHz, I'd probably be buying this right now!

Within the last 24 hours, 40 OEM FX-55's have been listed on eBay. Enter FX-55 to see. Forget about buying one to make a couple bucks. Since 9-22-06, only around 30 retail/OEM FX-55s have sucessfully sold. This onslaught on FX-55's will drive that average selling price into the ground.

I saw a review earlier today of someone OCing this CPU with a Mach II like yours, they got it to 3.6 stable I think.

Sweet. I remember when I was into benching a lot when I got my modded 7800GTX (when they were 1st out)..and Baker mods to my Mach II. It was ALWAYS some dude with an FX that would beat me. Do you recall any of his specs?

I just think it will be fun to mess around with one. I am not looking for an "upgrade", I have always just wanted an FX, as I am sure many in this thread think/feel the same. That multiplier being unlocked is such a huge draw for the overclocker... that and the thought of having a $700 cpu (once was) is awesome..for one reason or the other.

I guess I am just looking for everyone to feel so excited about this deal as I am...If you are an overclocker (still with a little old school feel) I am sure you are. too. It is cool to see so many ask about the chip and question their setup. The FX still has life in it.
