I wish I didn't come visit the board.

Bit on this deal and I'll see if this is better than my x2 3800+ @ 2.4ghz

Thank you OP. In for one. Will be nice to see what I can get out of this with my setup.

My 3200+ Venice only could reach 2.5ghz with air clocking with 100% stability, will be nice to have 2.6ghz without having to deal with any of the strange overclocking effects to deal with. Probably get 3ghz out of this with my old Artic Cooler Freezer 64.

If anyone doesnt have a decent HSF, and you dont want to piece one together, Arctic Cooling does make some really great heatpipe/fan solutions.

I didn't like that either, and I started to go post a seller's ad on ebay which was a copy of his but which put the code into the ad, so any reader could get it free.

But then I thought about it, I'd be doing buyers a $20 favor, and denying this guy whatever $20 sells he'd get.

And then I asked, how sure am I on what's right and wrong here - buyers will still save $30, and this guy did do the 'entreupenurial' activitity to think to put it on ebay, and it could benefit some people who would not have seen it. I hadn't thought to post it and likely wouldn't have posted it if not for his ad. Further, if I post this, would it lead him not to post something next time that could help people, and then no one will post it?

That took the steam out of my posting, and I decided to let him get whatever $20 buyers he gets, while we continue to help each other here.

Any other tips on motherboards (and fans) for people who either won't overclock or who are new to it, where 'ease of installation and use' is a factor?

I see the Artic Cooler Freezer 64 Pro recommended, $25 shipped.

I saw the DFI N4 Ultra-D recommended, about $115 shipped, reviews say 'hard to set up, for people who can spend hours, don't expect to work work the first try or two'.

Any other suggestions? My old ECS K7S54 sure can't run it

What? DFIs are easy to setup stock. Hit "optimized default" button and go. Take a quick scan of the screens to make sure the basics are set correctly (HDDs ect) and you're fine?

I'd like to see that rig that took hours to get running. He is either overclocking or making it entirely to hard. Theres no tweaking to get a DFI running at stock like anything else. I've never had a problem with getting any brand up and running the first time @stock.

Just check if the RAM you have will work in the DFI (any specific incompatibilities).. but you should do that with any motherboard you upgrade to.
No other suggestions.. the DFI + Arctic Cooling combo is tough to beat for ease of use and getting the highest quality stuff on the cheap (all Jap capacitors in DFI, heatpipes and as good of a fan setup as you are going to get without piecing together your own, which isnt worth it).

I had endless issues getting the first and last DFI board I bought to work. For some reason when I bought it (10 months after buying my CPU) it was on such an old BIOS it wouldn't work with my CPU without a BIOS update, then my X-Fi wouldn't work with it, and whenever I tried to boot with more than 2 of my 4 512MB sticks of RAM it wouldn't boot at stock speeds. Then the RAID setup was extremely weird an difficult to work with and I never did get it set up right even after following the terribly translated manual step by step.

I had it for 4 days and will never buy their products again. Their support is awful - no phone support at all and to me that is unacceptable.

Is there some other benchmarks i couls look at, I have a 3200 venice@2.5 and looking for a upgrade chip that will be my last upgrade with the 939 socket.

Yea, I feel the same way. Even though I did order it yesterday, is there someone who can reassure me that I made a good purchase? I have a 3000+ Venice clocked at 2.6Ghz.

I'm in the same boat. If this is the sign of things to come next week will be an even hotter deal. I'm waiting. At stock 3200 vs fx55 it is only 20% faster. Not worth it imo.

Yeah, had an Ultra-D and all the options can be daunting. It's for people who like to fiddle with stuff. If you don't, then other reasonable options are Asus, Abit, Epox, even Biostar (their "T" series). Decent motherboards don't start and end with DFI, no matter what some say.

The Cache do differ and the quality of the silicon and what not, but I prolly won't know the difference. I do overclock so I'm hoping for a 800Ghz boost that I got from my 3000+ can be alson done on the FX. If I can get 3.2 or so I'll be very pleased.

Anybody know if this will work in a Soltek SL-K8TPro-939? I'll be upgrading from a 3000+, so it will be a nice jump in performance according to Tom's.

I'll give you $2,000 for your 801.8 Ghz AMD 64 3000+ cpu.

You won't be finding a better deal on a single core cpu anytime soon (at least not for 6-12 months). The FX-55 has double the cache (usually will add a 10-15% performance over a 512k cache chip), and has a 30% higher frequency (.6/2.0). And this is at stock clocks. Overclocked, this cpu should reach the same or higher overclocking as the 3200+ Venice since the San Diego isn't much different from the Venice core in overclocking potential. If you have value memory or no memory divider options then this is a great chip for you since you can set the multiplier.

Sorry, that's my personal stash. I could give you my 2.6Ghz 3000+ cpu for that same price.

For mostly a gaming rig, what would be better? The FX55 (with possibly a mild OC) or a E6400 rig? Serious question.

The thought of getting a $1K chip for $140 has given me wood.

depends on the game. some newer games will use multiple cores. I know counter-strike: source only uses 1 core, but that's the only game I know about since thats all I play. For single core games, the fx-55 wins hands down.

Thanks, LukeMan.

It's only about a $120 diff b/t the two systems I spec'd out (FX55 vs E6400) but...

Unfortunately, I'll need to buy more memory no matter which route I take. The 1GB of PC3200 I have now are non-matched sticks and are a PITA to get running together in most boards. So, either way, DDR or DDR2, I'm paying about $300 for 2GB of memory.

also DDR1 is going up because of the supply and demand
