Agreed, but getting the extra 120 vertical pixels will cost you at least twice as much.

At that price, you might as well buy two of these and run them in portrait mode for an extra 840 vertical pixels

There are several 24" 1920x1200 panels out there. Dell and NEC make pretty good ones. Samsung, HP, HansG, and some others also make them. Just search on amazon or Newegg, or go straight to Dell for the 2410 or 2412.

Would this monitor be too much of a resource hog for my system? Currently on an old 18" dell at 1280x1024 and games like skyrim run fine.

i3 2100
hd 6850
ssd 80gb
4gb ram

Skyrim is relatively CPU-limited. At your resolution, your CPU is almost definitely the limiting factor. At 1080p, your HD6850 would be pushed harder and would likely be the limiting factor, but it should still be able to play the game pretty well. If you look at the middle graph on this page, you'll see where you could run into problems: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5699/nvidia-geforce-gtx-680-review/15

At 1080p (actually 1920x1200), a graphics card with 1GB of VRAM, like the HD6850 (or the 560Ti in that benchmark), cannot adequately play with 4xMSAA. You could either drop down to 1680x1050 and probably get 60fps with 4xMSAA, or you could just play without MSAA. Either way, you'll probably enjoy the game more due to the wider view.

ASUS has nice warranties on these... 3 years, including two-way shipping costs.

It's never simple I guess, thanks for your comment. Ordered it and will run skyrim first thing.

Quality? All Asus panels I've had with the exception of the VE258Q have had bad backlight bleeding around the edges and a large swing to the blue end of the spectrum. I've been through about 6 panels of various asus lines and haven't been impressed. The VE258Q is the only one I would consider.

Great, let us know how it goes.

I game on a 1080p 46" from 8 feet away and on a 24" 1920x1200 at my desk. Totally different application. I'd personally never want a TV on my desk because it would be too large to view the entire screen and the limited resolution would be painfully evident from that close. It would look grainy, whereas from 6-8 ft away it looks good for everything but small text, which it doesn't have adequate dot pitch to show clearly.

Similarly, using a monitor from far away wouldn't be great because it would be too small to keep focus on the action on screen.

^ This. It depends on how you game. If you sit on the couch with a gamepad, TV is fine. If you sit at a desk, close to the screen, and want sharp text, you need a monitor. Preferably a 16:10 monitor...
