Dead Asus Notebook

My wife is the prime user on this, as I use my custom rig for my stuff, and don't really need a laptop. Her ancient Dell laptop died last week (backlight on the display went out), and it's not worth it to fix that, since I think it was built with vacuum tubes. Anyway, we went looking for a budget laptop, under $500, and she tried out a bunch, and I selected based on manufacturer and specs. Ended up with an Asus 15.6" laptop with a Core i5 2410M. Case looked solid, screen was OK, but good enough for what she uses it for, etc.

Worked great for two days and then last night: nothing. Won't turn on, won't do anything. Even plugging in the AC adapter won't show any lights to indicate it's plugged in or charging. Tried removing the battery, etc. Called ASUS support and they basically told me to have it repaired, though obviously with it being 3 days old, we'd exchange rather than repair.

I had read good things about Asus laptops and they seem to have decent reliability, though now I'm slightly gunshy about a direct replacement. Should we just swap for the same model and chalk it up to a lemon, or switch to another machine? If you think we should switch, any suggestions? This would almost exclusively be for office type work, so I don't need anything beyond the integrated graphics, and there won't be major number crunching type programs at work here. Would need to be something she could try in a store, since she has pretty specific keyboard feel and touchpad feel requirements, and loved the Asus touchpad and layout.

Hello,

My name is Scott, I am with the Asus Customer Loyalty team.

If the laptop is indeed only 3 days old, then you should easily be within any return period. You didn't mention where it is you purchased the unit, but I would strongly suggest that you take the unit back there and exchange it for a new one.

Unless there is evidence of liquid damage or some other obvious warranty voiding damage, this seems like a very clear cut case of a DOA unit. So there should be no issues getting the reseller to take the unit back and exchange it out for a new one. If for some reason that is not the case, then please do let me know either via PM or email and I will make sure it gets passed along to someone who can get in touch with that reseller/retailer and find out what is going on and if it is maybe a sign of larger issues that we would need to address with that company.

Thanks. We did not have any trouble returning the unit. We did end up going for a direct exchange. This is my first experience with an Asus laptop, and, well, it wasn't great so far, but still, it's got a great set of features for the price, looks to be well built, and such....so let's hope that first one was just a dud, and the next one lasts for a few years.

If it's any consolation to you, I have had a bit of Asus gear over the years, and all of it has been reliable.

Good to hear. I hope your wife is very happy with her new laptop for some time to come.

The only bad thing I have against buying some Asus laptops from retailers like Staples is, that often you get the standard 1 year warranty that most other laptop manufacturers give.

But a lot of Asus that you can buy online come with a standard 2 year warranty, with 1 year accidental, and 1 time screen replacement.

So, if you can find a very comparable Asus online to the retail version, you can often come out ahead due to the warranty.

Remember some laptops, like the black friday deals are custom models only available at certain stores.
