Okay, get out your secret decorder rings....
The serial number as listed on the box and on the actual burner itself, are listed differently. For the much sought-after "
B" Lite-On drive mechanism, the "
B" is listed as a
prefix to the serial number listed on the box, and as a
suffix to the serial number listed on the actual drive itself ("401248
B") - which essentially is nothing more than the "rated" speeds for the drive mechanism (in this case 40/12/48 -or- "401248").
Look on the
bottom of the box for the
serial number (you'll need this serial number for the rebate, as well). TDK drives using the Sanyo mechanism will be as follows:
X401248A
* * * * * *
and those with the Lite-On mechanism:
B401248A
* * * * * *
To date, all the TDK 40/12/48 drives I have looked-at, have a six-digit serial number added to the "401248A" designation to produce the serial number as listed externally on the product packaging.
[drive manufacturer][401248A][unit serial number]
From the "for-what-its-worth" department, the drive mechanism on which PC World rated the TDK as the (current) best CD-RW, was based on the
Sanyo drive mechanism / (
actual review) - *
not* the Lite-On unit. The
Lite-On drive was the slowest of the 40/12/48 burners, although the difference was only 10 seconds.... The two *
major* differences that set the Lite-On mechanism apart from the others, is support for "SafeDisk2" (ie. the Lite-On can copy disks with the SafeDisk2 copy-protection scheme) and "drag-and-drop" file copying (also known as the Mount Rainier specification),
*if* (and that's a very big
*IF*) and when this standard becomes supported in the major operating systems (ie. Linux/Mac/Windows).
The "initial" burner I bought is a Sanyo drive, with an
April date of manufacture. The unit that
RandyE bought was a Lite-On, with a
March date of manufacture. So it may be that units built on or before
March may all be Lite-On, while those built on or after
April may be Sanyo. Given that most CompUSAs will be getting their
initial store stock mid-week, there's a strong possibility that all of these units will be based on the Sanyo drive mechanism, if the date of manufacturer is the key to "which" drive you get. List your drive's serial number, date of manufacture, and the retailer where you bought the burner - and I can track it here for the benefit of others that haven't yet got in on the deal:

Anyone Get Best Buy to price match the TDK burner ? ? ? ? Was it a Lite-On or Sanyo ? ? ? ?
