The fact is that all of you in this thread are behaving like a sheep guided by obsessed "coupon" sheppard. I see all sorts of insultive comments and they are not coming from me. Bumping it back to the top since the deal is still active and well worth the money! I had originally bought the 24X and ended up getting an ACER (oh man, that drive sucked). So I went to the store and exchanged for the 32X. They honored the $25 discount and everything. Very nice manager, I should send her a thank you card.

Anyway, I got a Lite-ON and it's sooo much better than the ACER so for $10 more, you guys might as well exchange them.

MisterKingdom, I'm curious as to why you'd want the Lite-On w/2mb buffer over the Mitsumi w/16mb buffer. The Mitsumi has buffer underrun protection....are their drives no good?

So what drive is preferable - the Lite On or the Mitsumi?

From discussions here and what I've seen on the linked ref pages - Mitsumi supports Mt. Rainier format but does not create working backups for SD2 stuff.

Liteon does not support Mt. Rainier(?) but does create working backups of SD2.

Both have burnproof of some type, but the Mitsumi has 16 MB buffer vs. 2 MB buffer for the Liteon.

I had bought during the earlier deal from OM and ended up with the Mitsumi, should I try to exchange that for the Liteon?

Hypothetically, are the Liteons better for backup purposes?

I'm so confused....

From reading the review... It seems like the Mitsumi's are better for backing up your hard drive. Lite-ons are probably better if you like to copy music or game cd's.

I just want to point out that the Mitsumi CR480ATE will burn SD2 titles.Just use CD MATE. In my opinion it is better than Clone! Check it out.Plus it is only like $28.50. I have the Mitsumi and it has the 16 meg buffer! If I go to the european website,it says 2 meg buffer.Like I said,I have it and it says 16 meg in the
drive report. Also there is a small utility that you can run from a floppy,that will tell the drive manufacturer and firmware.I think it is on cdrlabs.com

There is the firmware update utility that was used to flash the Verbatim 24x mfg drive to allow your computer to "see" the drive as a Lite-on, but no one has been brave enough to try it on there new 32x Verbatim drive to see if work would also work on the 32x drive too.
