I got my drive this afternoon and installed it. My only problem is that Nero didn't come with a serial number. I'll have to call for that tomorrow (unless something has changed and you don't need one). I'm using Easy CD 5.1 Platinum and it is working great for this drive. Make sure you've upgraded to v5.1 though. I'm still going to install Nero and see if I like it or not.

I burned a CD at 32x today. It went pretty quickly. Actually, I think I'm being limited more by my source drive or the bus transfer rates. My buffer usage stayed right around 1% for the entire burn, and it looked like the drive had to use burn-proof to allow the source drive to catch up. Also, I couldn't use my computer for ANYTHING else during the burn, which was kind of annoying. Like I said, I'm going to give Nero a shot. Also, I'm going to try burning at lower speeds (16, 20, 24) to see if I can go back to multi-tasking during the burn.

Jeepers94 are you still among us?

Jeepers is right....JEEEEPERS! 28 bucks for THAT drive?? What's the speed of it and where did you, or where can you get it for that price? (referring to your 16mb Mitsumi).

Rgwalt, I don't understand that. Which drive did you end up with, and is it a 2mb buffer?? It must not be a real Burn proof drive. I can do just about anything when I copy a CD (OE open sending and receiving mail, a bunch of web pages open, app's open, NORTON RUNNING, software firewall running, etc) and I've never burned a coaster. (Yamaha 20x10x40, 8mb buffer, Burn Proof, ECDC 5 Platinum). This WAS on a PIII 600e @ 800mhz when I tried that. I could probably do more now with the PIII 1ghz I now use.

The OEM (bundled) Nero does not need serial number. It has the number embedded. But, with that number, you will not be able to use your Nero on other CDRW drive.

NERO is the software for operating your CD-RW drive and it can only be use on the CD-RW it came with, so if a freind wanted use the NERO software on their CD-RW they couldn't do that.

Here's a good site for learning about CD-RW drive and how they work : http://www.cdrfaq.org/
Anyone else know of any good FAQ sites for beginners?

The 32x cendyne is back on the OfficeMax web site.

Also someone over on FW has posted that he was able to PM the Staples $99.99 price on 32x CenDyne on-line at the OfficeMax web site and getting thre drive for $34.99. Keep in mind that OfficeMax PM's with 15% difference making the price after the PM $98.49, so you have to add another item with the price of $1.51 or higher so your total is over $100 to use the $25 off $100 coupon. If you already pruchased the 32x cendyne drive ask for the PM without 15% difference or they won't let you PM and use the coupon at the same time because after the PM and 15% difference, CD-RW drive will cost only $98.49. As always when doing a PM "YMMV".

on

Their total price: $ 99.99

Our price: $ 109.99
Our delivery: $ 0.00
Our total price: $ 109.99

Difference: $ 10.00
15% of Difference: $ 1.50

Be VERY[/B} skeptical about the rebates, since the rebate company is NOT following through with the correct rebate amount.

I should have received a $30 rebate, but they listed it as $20, and when I complained, now they say that it is INVALID, and I complained again, and no response now
for 4 days.

I suggest NOT TO BUY ANYTHING from OfficeMax, until they can fix this!

Your're complaining to the wrong people, complain to OfficeMax (1-800-283-7674) not RebateHQ. People have been buying these CenDyne CD-RW drive with rebate four 4 or 5 months now and have been posting that they have been receiving their rebate checks in 4 t0 8 weeks without any problems.

There is no login on the OfficeMax web site. You have to put the item in the cart to see the coupon code box.

I have a question for those who got a Mitsumi drive, is it normal to have the led always on (yellow) when there is a cd in the drive? The led on my drive is always on whenever there is a cd inside even if the drive is idle.

Yes it normal for the led to be on when a CD is on the drive, even if it is idle. I have a HP CD24ci (Mitsumi 4809TE) - 241240 CD-RW doing this. The Lite-On leds only come on when there is disk activity. Not sure of the colors..... yellow - reading and orange - writing????

Thanks. It looks like the led is yellow when it is idle, red when it is writing and green when it is reading.

Have the Mitsumi. The first burn @ 32x went from taking 18 mins to just 4 mins! Big problem though - lots of skips! Tried again with burn protection off - same speed, tdk silver cdr, 18 songs total 80 mins and one 3 second skip! Arrrgghh!. Either its the media or Ive got to slow it down to 24.

I'm using some imation 24x and have no problem burning them at 32x. And you can use the mitsumi drive to burn sd2 titles with clonecd too. Just remember to use beta blocker to patch the weak sector on the image file and enable amplifying weak sector option (or add hide cdr media option) in clonecd.

I think it is best to burn 24x at 24x or 16x at 16 because you risk the chance of bad burn, the media is coated only for that speed. I burned some higher then rated and more then half of it don't even work right at a later date say after a week. Deleted the files before after burned and lost all of it after realizing my mistake by taking chances.

Some of the better drives can burn faster than the rated X, but that is a good habit to get into (burn at the rated speed). I use a Yam 20x10x40 (burn proof, 8mb buffer) and every time I put some decent media in it, REGARDLESS of it's rated X (whether it's only 12x or 16x media), it defaults to a record speed of 20x. When I put some cheap CDR media in, it will default to the speed of the media. Hmmmmm. It's like the drive is saying...."hey I can record @ 20x on the media just fine".

On another note, whenever I put data on a CDR, I always close it to read in a reg. drive (with option to write to it again at a later date), then test it in the CDROM drive to be sure it's ok. THEN and only then do I delete the files off my HD. I too did that same thing you did once......Once. Never again. :disgust: If it is really important data like my website backup, I make two CD's of it and on different brand media.

I am at a loss though to explain (if I understand you correctly) why your CD's would work ok, then not work a week later. That's odd. If I was forced to make a guess, I'd say the drive you are trying to read them in a week later, is slowly going bad.

Your problem might be with the Mitsumi built-in media quality system detection which will prevent low quality media to be written at high speeds (24x/32x). Lite-on also uses a media quality system detection on their drive.

BTW, Lite-on has something call "SMART-Burn Media Checker for LTR-3212xx ". Useful util for LiteOn LTR-30123S and LTR-30125W users
1: Show what speed your writer will write this media at(which speed smartburn selects for your media).
2: Show the CD-R disc manufacturer, DYE type and CD length. Download it here

Jeepers and Bao,

Thanks for your comments. I was able to backup a SD2 disk using CDMate on my Mitsumi. Did not have any luck with CloneCD though I was using the demo and it killed the amplify weak sectors option once it determined that I was in the US - some sort of copyright infringement protection that applies for the states.

Does the purchased version of CloneCD allow you to amplify weak sectors?

Thanks
