<sigh> If someone could PM me a staples coupon code for whatever off $90 or $100, I'd be thrilled. I couldn't find any through the usual channels in 10 minutes of looking.

Thanks in advance!

Just got in on the UPS and CDRW by phone (no staples nearby). It took a while for the CSR to find the right price for the UPS. Used the 20 off 100 coupon for survey without a hitch. Thanks for all the info. Total after tax, coupon and rebates = $28.

I just came from Staples, got the 12 digit serial number drive. the serial number is 231210006824. I haven't opened it yet. Can some tell me if this is a Lite-On or a Verbatim and if it's a Lite-On, is it the S or the W model. I'm hoping that someone who got the W model has a serial number similiar to mine.

You have either a Liteon or Verbatim. Look on the label either right below or above the serial number (can't remember off-hand) and if the model number starts with a "VBT", it's a Verbatim and if it starts with a "LTR", it's a Liteon.

I would suggest checking out the original thread by MysticMan. He went into plenty of detail with this thread. Thanks MysticMan!

Here's the copy and pasted info for the Liteon. I'd go grab the Verbatim info, but the damn forum is so slow right now because I'm not a paying member.

Lite-on 32x mfg drive have 12 digits, no letters - Sample (123456789012), Model #LTR-32123S or the newer mfg (overclockable) #LTR-32123W.

To identify which rebadged drive is in the Cendyne box look at the serials # on the top right label at the back of the box and the model # if there is one.

Lite-on 32x mfg drive have 12 digits, no letters - Sample (123456789012), Model #LTR-32123S or the newer mfg (overclockable) #LTR-32123W.
Verbatim 32x mfg drive have (rebadged Lite-on drives) 12 digits, no letters - Sample (123456789012), Model #VBT321240A
AOpen 32x drives have 23 digits mostly numbers with three letters near the end -Sample (123D1234567890123JED1), Model #CRW3248
New OptoRite 32x mfg drive have 16 digits mostly numbers with three letters at the beginning -Sample (ADA12C3456789012), Model #CW3201

I was wondering with all thats is being said about these.. what is the best to look for in the Store?

At the one near me they have Lite-on and Verbatim. I am sure if I hit a few other Staples in the area I could get almost any of them.

I did pick up the UPS today. got it with a $10 of $10 or more purchase Coupon. total price $26.44 before the $35.00 rebate.

Going for the CDRW tomorrow.

Thanks in Advance for the help.

The LiteOn is the most popular one and the best one for backing up protected game CD.

Lite-on is the best choice, but if the Verbatim is rebadged Lite-on, it is fine too.
The main advantage to Lite-on's is they have the ability to make backups of your retail purchased, copy protected CD's.
Most drives, including the highly regarded Plextor's, can no longer do this, but Lite-on's can.

I scored on a Verbatim unit.
Haven't checked it out yet, but if it is a Lite-on clone, it will replace my 60 day old 24x10x40x true Lite-on drive.
Used the $20 off $100 printable Survey coupon, but since they were OOS on the Battery backup, manager gave me $20 off drive alone.

I got the Verbatim ordered from OM online. I flashed it to Lite-On just fine.

Hi,

I wish people would stop bringing up the 32125W.

I think it is pretty clear that ALL Cendyne rebadged Lite-On drives are the 32123S version.

I have yet to see even ONE person proclaim that they got a 32125W in either the Staples deal or the OfficeMax deal.

If you haven't read yet, the "5W" can be overclocked to 48x and the "3S" cannot. That's why some people are looking for the "5W." My suggestion would be to buy a purebred Lite-On for a better chance to get a 32125W.

I did this deal tonight with a slight twist to add the Artec DVD with the $20 rebate -

$89.98 - CenDyne 32x CDRW (got a Verbatim)
$34.94 - Conext battery backup
$69.94 - Artec 16x DVD
-$39.53 - 110% PM Guarantee on the DVD here.

=$155.33 total
- $ 30.00 off $150 (got an email coupon today but also found at the place of the thick wallets)
- $ 50.00 MIR on the CDRW
- $ 35.00 MIR on the battery backup
- $ 20.00 MIR on the DVD
=$20.53 + your tax

Not too bad!

Well, I got one of those OptoRite drives. Their website doesn't tell me a whole bunch. I somehow feel disappointed, like the kid who opened a X-mas present and got a pair of dress socks instead of a toy light sabre.

Is this a decent drive, or should I feel ripped off?

If you live near a Staples store you can exchange the OptoRite for a different one. Information on how to tell what drive is inside by looking at the outside of the box is posted at the begining of this thread.

Hello,

My local Staples had two drives:

1) Open box, no software or manual, Lite-On 12 digit s/n
2) Sealed box, AOpen like s/n (ending in "JEE4"), Drive Model "32x12x48 CR-RW"

Not caring about copying games, I grabbed the second one figuring it's an AOpen. Once home, I open the box and look at the drive and the FCC sticker says "I/Omagic Corporation". Model number on the drive is the same as on the box.

So is this an AOpen? It would be nice to know what the heck it is so I'll know where to get updates.

If it's an AOpen then this should be the correct firmware upgrade, right?

http://www.aopen.com/tech/download/Optical/crw/crw3248.htm

An interesting note, the latest firmware (v1.15 - 6/17/02) claims to implement a "Speed Boost".

Anyone tried this firmware on their Cendyne/AOpen?

Thanks,

EricR

If the read speed is "48x" then it's indeed a AOpen mfg drive and no I haven't heard anyone say they have used that firmware upgrade version. Most people got LiteOn/Verbatim drives. Let use know how it turns out.

Thanks mystic man...
I walked in...got the burner and the UPS...$111 after the $20 rebate I got off your other site ...worked like a charm. Just gave them the code....so after $85 in rebates I paid $26 for the burner and UPS.

I got a LiteOn S model and could care less if it doesn't OC to 48x...as long as it burns and can read subchannel data/audio via clone cd.

Thanks again.

Picked up the topic deal, Cendyne 32x Burner & Conext UPS today at a local staples (used a printable $20 off $100 found over at "thick"wallet) The staples store still had 3 of each item left on its shelves.
Total came too: 113.05 after taxes & coupon - $85 MIRs = $28.05 after I get my Rebates back. Not bad at all!

Also, the Burner I got was a Lite-On 32123S (not upgradable to 48x ) But, it's allot faster than my current 12x Burner!

I got in the deal today at City of Industry, CA store.

The CenDyne drive I got is a Aopen 32x12x48. It is good for backing up protected CD's like the Lite-On units according to CloneCD, althought the write speed isn't as good as Lit-On units.

They are completely out of APC UPS.

This is a great deal. How does this compare to the CDRW deals within the following links.
Please point out which is the best CDRW out of all three (this thread and the following two). Any
reviews comparing the three side by side?

you can just go to www.nero.com and download the newest version - it will install over the older version - it will say something like packaged deal and will install fine
