Just recieved mine, only complaint is that it is very loud when reading disks.

Does anyone know what is the correct upc code is for the rebate? I have 3 little barcodes on the back of the box.

I guess it's not louder than AOpen241040.
Man, that drive was so loud my wife asked me get different burner.
I bought an Lg 32X burner, and yes, it's much quieter.

I think UPC code is one in the right side of the bottom.

By the way, I ordered one around 12:-1 PM on Saturday and got it today, and it's Lite-On.

the reason its loud is because the disc is spining at probably 7000 rpm, if you were using an old drive it would be quieter

I went out and got the CD-RW and as a treat to myself the 500VA APC UPS.

I just have a question, I use my current Nero installation (I had it installed thanks to my Creative 4-2-24), but it only saw the Lite-On I got (Woohoo, $30 for a kick ass drive) as a 24x. My bios and everything says the name is 32123s or something like that, and the drive plate says 32x12x40x, but silly Nero won't see it...any suggestions?

You're nero is probably too old. Just install the newer version given on the CD.

After looking around for the Lite On, I bought one @ the second staples I went to, and it was the Aopen. Decided to take it back to staples and the one right by my house had the Lite On------- BOOOOOOO YA. Serial # said LTR-32123S. If you want the lite on, make sure you look for that serial # on the box.

I got a lite-on today, and it was a DOA. I couldn't complete a burn even at the lower speed. My sytem did a hard lock about 78% completion. I'm stuck with my plextor 12x till tomorrow I guess

$30 for a 32x's burner. I am happy
Have you tried burning a Safedisc2 CD without using something CloneCD?

WHat do you mean without using something clone cd? No I have not tried it yet, but previous indications lead me to believe it can do it. Even if it can't, my 16xs lite-on in my second rig can if I ever have to go that route! For $30, I am still happy so far. Burned at 24xs with some 16x PNY media I got free from BB Black friday! Will try it @32xs tomorrow.
I would have preferred the Lite on I guess, but isn't a big enough deal for me to drive to the BM and try to exchange it.

Csium: When ejecting the CD tray, the tray goes out fine for 3/4 of the way. On the last 1/4, the motor starts to whine and the tray slows down for the last 1/4.

Yep, same behavior on my LiteOn.

cougarls88: And as a BTW, to those of you who got the Lite-On drive and are considering flashing the bios, watch out! I flashed mine with the updated one (XS0R > XS0U) and it screwed the drive over (computer saw it, but Windows couldn't read from it).

Doh, thanks for the warning, I was just about to do this. Has anyone successfully flashed his/her Lite-On to the XS0U firmware yet?

I got a Verbatim
First of all, can these be returned to the B&M store if bought through the website?
Second, if number one is yes is it worth it to return the Verbatim to get a Lite-On

So far poeple who own the CenDyne 32x drive have identified the rebadged mfgs as Lite-on, verbatim (Rebadged Lite-ons), Mitsumi (16Mb Buffer and supports the 'Mt. Rainier' format) and now the AOpen (reads at 48x).

To identify which rebadged drive is in the Cendyne box look at the serials # on the top right label at the back of the box.

Lite-on 32x mfg drive have 12 digits, no letters - Sample (123456789012)
Verbatim 32x mfg drive have 12 digits, no letters - Sample (123456789012) (seem to be rebadged Lite-on 32x drives)
Mitsumi 32x drives have 22 digits mostly numbers -Sample (CR-123ATE45678A12QH9012). Also says 16BM buffer on the box.
New! AOpen 32x drives have 23 digits mostly numbers with three letters near the end -Sample (123D1234567890123JED1)

according to this it looks like the verbatim IS a Liteon (or could possibly be)

Poochy ----> thanks for giving me hope that i might have a Liteon on the way!

I got an AOpen. Last time the stores had these deals on 24x writers I returned an AOpen and finally found a Lite-On. I am curious whether people more knowledgeable than I think there is any real reason to hunt for a Lite-On. From reading the review it seems to me that the AOpen is much faster at reading discs, is much faster at digital audio extraction, is faster at writing at lower speeds, and is slower at writing at higher speeds (if memory serves it's slower by something like 20 seconds over the course of writing a whole disc). First of all, copying a disc involves reading it and then writing it, so the overall speed to read and then write a disc may be about the same or even faster with the AOpen. Second of all, I will rarely need to backup a SafeDisc2 protected disc, but if I decide I want a backup at some point it won't be acceptable if the drive won't do it. If the posts about Amplify Weak Sector are correct, that shouldn't be an issue for the AOpen. So, I am not inclined to try to replace the drive with a Lite-On, but I am curious what others think.

I got a Verbatim as well...wondering the same thing.

Also, i have the CDRW and a DVD-ROM on the same IDE channels, and when I copied a disc on the fly, it burned in around 10 minutes, but doing it from hard drive did it in 4 minutes...I didn't know it made THAT much of a difference! I guess I'll be switchin the IDE cables around...

Yup! 2 drives, no problem. Still has (S)VCD and DivX write problems on old crapola green CDRs.

DanFungus, your on the fly burning speed is probably limited by the data extraction speed of the DVD drive. Smartburn kicks in and stops the burner until the DVD can catch up and refill the buffer in Nero.
You can download the latest version of Nero from www.ahead.de and install it over your existing Nero. I think it is about 11 megs.

To those of you with the Verbatim drives... your drive is physically identical to a Lite-On drive except for the Verbatim logo on the front. You can easily reflash with a Lite-On firmware if you want the drive identified as Lite-On. There's really no reason to exchange your drive.
