For my fellow Atlanta ater's. The Staples on Ponce de Leon across from City Hall east has atleast 7 of these drives in stock. They are the Liteon variety.

Few quick questions....do you send back the paper "this is not an invoice" with the rebate? Also, flashed my aopen drive to the latest 1.12 firmware, worked great BUT nero and clonecd both detect it as a 24x drive....burns fine....but where is my 32x?

For the people how are having problem getting NERO to see your drive as 32x this info may help. I don't remenber where I copied this from.

(Q30
Why Nero recording software only allow me to chose 8X or 16X speed after I upgraded to your latest F/W?

A30
With the F/W upgrade, your current Nero version may not recognized your drive as high speed recording device. You may solve your problem by doing the following:
1).Start your Nero application
2).Place blank disc in the drive (You must use a media certified to support your drive?s maximum recording speed. i.e.: you need a 40X media for your LTR-40125S drive)
3).In Nero, click on file -> preference, select Cache tab, then select test all drive speeds. Or simply go to disc copy menu, under the copy tap, check the dirve?s maximum speed. This way, Nero will understand your drives? maximum performance, and allow to choose that speed in the future

(Note: * Nero Ver. 5.5.5.6 or later do NOT support writing speed below 8X. If you have chose ?high speed?option during installation, then your choice will only start from 8X. ** If the above step did NOT solve your problem, then you will need to un-install Nero, remove Nero directly manually from Windows Explorer and reinstall Nero.

Also a site called CDSpeed.com LINK has some good info and FAQ on getting the most speed from your CD-RW.

I ordered mine from the website Sunday morning and got it yesterday. I checked the number right away and it was an AOPEN. Now I don't know if I should exchange it or not. I guess I'll keep it in the box until I hear some good or bad info about the AOPEN drive.

Quick question on doing the online rebate, when it ask for the UPC code, do I type in the whole thing (including the 2 numbers at both ends) or just the numbers in between?

Yes, include the numbers at both ends, they are part of the UPC code.

Well I placed my order at 1am Sunday morning and just got a call from Staples saying it's OOS. Guess the fact that my order stated it would be shipped in 1 day means nothing.

THANKS for the firmware link Bob/NYC

1) Boot to DOS with a Win98 boot disk, using Shift+F5 to boot directly to a command prompt (i.e. do NOT load CD drivers)

If you have NTFS drives a Win98 boot disc won't be able to read them.

The Lite-On site says the executable contained in the R32XS0U.zip should be run in WINDOWS.....all this talk of drives damaged after flashing has got me a bit paranoid...I'd like to do it so Smart Burn is updated with the latest disc profiles BUT not at the expense of possibly damaging the drive...so is it dangerous? BTW I have a Lite-On LTR-32123S with XSOF firmare

thanks

I've had great luck with Staples rebates. Easy submission online - allows you to print the form to send in the receipt and UPC. Nice tracking online.

I've sent in 3 rebates in the past year and have always gotten my check within 30 days.

I flashed my Verbatim with XS0U to a Lite-on. Checked Nero, showed up as a 32x Lite-on with a 1984kb buffer (it's 2mb when you do the math, 1byte=8bits, 1kbyte=1024bytes or was it 1meg=1024kb? something along those lines). I burned with Nero at 32x in 3.5 minutes and the disc worked in my CDRW and CD player. What bugged me was that I couldn't use CDRWIN. So...I flashed it back to the original Verbatim f/w. Checked Nero again, showed up as a 32x Verbatim with a 2048kb buffer. Burned again, disc worked and all that, but the drive with the Lite-on f/w was faster, burning more megs/mins in a shorter amount of time. Tried CDRWIN and still couldn't use it. The message was "No CDROM recording device was found on the SCSI or IDE bus," which was the same message I got when my drive was flashed to a Lite-on 32123S. I've seen that other people have this problem with CDRWIN and their Lite-on 32123S or Verbatim VBT321240A (that's what it says on the box but Windows XP recognizes it as VBT321240AL). So...has anyone figured out what the problem is? Is it software? Firmware? I don't know what's up with the buffer discrepancy either, but I don't really care, 1984kb is 2megs, 2048 is more than 2megs, but not by much.

Summary:
No problems flashing to and back from Lite-on (done it dos with mtkflash)
Buffer discrepancy depending on f/w
Can't use CDRWIN with either f/w
Can burn working discs with Nero with both f/w
Both show up as 32x in Nero

My first post, welcome me to Anandtech!

One more tidbit: CDRWIN recognized my Verbatim and when I flashed it to a Lite-on as CD ROM readers, but not as Recorders. So I don't think it's a hardware or f/w issue, but please help me anyway.

Another one: I've tried reinstalling CDRWIN, reinstalling ASPI drivers (both goldenhawks and adaptecs), rebooting (haha), and all that junk.

Can a couple of people please check something out for me?

I had a verbatim converted to lite on. When I go to nero and go to recorder --> choose recorder and look at my drive info, it says the recorder buffer is 1984KB. I though that's weird that it's not 2MB.

I was curious what people with 1) Verbatim not converted, 2) True Lite on and 3) other Verbatims converted to liteon see.
Please include the firmware rev you flashed to and your version of Nero.

Thanks!
It shows 2048 on non-flashed Verbatim, soon to be flashed
z0ner, thanks for breaking down the steps! It was kinda confusing to look at, at first on their website, but you made it clear for me
The only thing I'm not 100% clear on is that for X, you choose pri mas, pri sla....that's where the CDRW is on the IDE chain, correct? that way it knows which drive to flash...right?
Thanks

i got Verbatim today, flash to liteon w/o problem, the thing is nero come with the drive works with Verbatim only, it says i have to buy a retail version nero to get it work with liteon, what a shame, the drive is only cost me 30 bucks and the software?? 60? anybody

I had Nero 5.5 (which I purchased) and got Nero 5.5 included with my TDK VeloCD. Nero has drive specific versions of its software.
I picked up this Cendyne (Verbatim) and now have ANOTHER copy of Nero. The fact that the firmware update for this drive makes Nero think that the Verbatim is now a LiteOn should be STRONGLY considered before flashing. Nero is a kickass program and it is a shame to take it out of the package deal for a device manager listing. After all LiteOn ain't Plextor. Even Plextor ain't Plextor anymore!

Any input to other advantages of a firmware update (other than name change)- I would love to hear.
