I got the Lite-on and updated the firmware to XSOU; funny thing, the included CDR would only burn at 24X, but my Fuji's (TY) burn at 32X

well... I was suppose to have gotten a lite on from the outside...but it was verbatim...recognized it no proble, but no discs would spin up...just exchanged it for another...this time a straight up liteon...
and that puppy was fast....did on the fly and it didn't even use the BURN protection....i like!!!!

Yup I used the right firmware. I think CD Speed is just buggy about reporting what method it uses. I think either it doesn't like the media or DMA isn't really on, even though everything says it is.

Now when the heck are they going to invent crash proof burning technology? Windows couldn't mulitask to save it's life and crashes if it does more than 2 strenuous things at once.

I fixed my slow speed problem
DMA wasn't really on. I turned off that IDE autodetect in the bios a long time ago to save bootup time, instead setting the HDDs in the BIOS. I just turned that autodetect on bootup back on and now it works fine.

Yes, you'll get the rebate. Your invoice will be dated for the 23rd. I won't get mine until the 29th, but I ordered on the 23rd.

I asked the online CSR, since I'm getting it late too. If the receipt only has delivery date, they'll mail you an order date receipt.

Yes, www.liteon.com was minorly hacked (I saw it around 5~6pm Eastern time, only entry webpages were hacked at that time). Hacking a Taiwanese tech-company's website (apparently by a Chinese hacker) won't prove anything...

It's quite slow to fill the 2M buffer on my PC. Anyone know how to solve it? Is there any configuration?

Jonno- yep, that's funny! Shipping a 24X CDR with a 32X burner. Mine was manufactured by Infodisc (Korea).

Crap... I got an aOpen. Ordered 5/19 like everyone else. Was told it would be a four day wait. The package came last Friday. I was hoping for a Liteon... All my other drives are Liteon...

Sucks not having a local Staples. Have to drive 2-3 hours to get to one...

Anything really WRONG with the aOpen? I haven't even hooked it up yet. I figure it's only $30. I needed to replace my CD-ROM anyways, so why not throw another burner in. I'll probably just keep using my 24x Liteon for burning...

I got an AOpen and I'm keeping it. Last time they had this deal for 24x drives I looked everywhere and finally switched my AOpen for a Lite-On. Having done that once, I don't really think it's worth it. If you read the reviews, the AOpen is faster at many things, including reading/ripping CDs, and is just a little slower at 32x writing. I view the drives as roughly comparable. I'm going to sell my Lite-On 24x and keep the AOpen 32x.

Cricky: I have the 24x AOpen burner and it works good so you'll probably be happy with your 32x. The write speed may be a little slower than the 32x Lite-On, but if you do any music ripping you'll more than make up for that with the faster read speed (48x). Just get the latest firmware and make sure you remove the jumper to enable UDMA-33 mode (why didn't they make that the factory default?). The only complaint I've heard about the AOpen is that it won't copy SD2 disks using Nero or EasyCD, but someone posted earlier that the AOpen can copy these using CloneCD.

I'll give it a try. I'm open to trying different drives, but have become accustomed to the Liteon's for my last two drives. I hope it's better than the Mitsumi POS 4X I had.

Serial has 12 digits, all numbers.

In the Nero that came with the drive, it says:

Overburn: supported
Buffer underrun protection: BURN-proof
Recorder Buffer: 2048kb

So is my drive a Lite-On (some are saying some Verbatims are not so that's why I'm asking...I did read the whole thread)?

And why do most or all have SMART-Burn while I have BURN-Proof? What's the difference (and which is better) and what's a good site that talks about the different types of buffer underrun protection?

All 32x Verbatim drives are rebabged Lite-ons and so is yours.
Update your Nero app and you should see "SMART-Burn" after that.

I have burned a few cds without removing the jumper and it takes about 3 and a half minutes, could you tell me the reason why should we do it? I am not sure what is that jumper for. I thought we could enable that using windows. I think I am confuse now.

Same thing for me, except I didn't get a call from Staples... my order status finally showed up online. Bad thing is, I ordered one for my stepmom (15 minutes away) at like 5PM and she GOT HERS! Apparently a different warehouse ships to her address, short distance away that it is.

I realize it was a good deal and I didn't lose anything, but I can't help but feel a little screwed...
