The drive appears to be an Aopen, however, the face is different than the one on their website. I updated the bios that came with mine (1.10) to 1.12 from the Aopen site and have had no problems burning anything. I wonder if Aopen makes an OEM version and this is it?

MysticMan, thanks for the tip. I suppose I'll be happy with the AOpen then, if that's what I get. I don't need to copy Safedisc2 discs too often.

After I ordered mine online this moring I got antsy and went down to Staples at 10:00 and was the first in the door. They had one in stock and the model number on the sticker on the box said "LTR-32123". I thought "cool".

Went to buy it and the manager balked at my (printed out jpg) coupon. I told him I got it from an email and he said I wasn't supposed to cut out the coupon, I was supposed to bring in the entire email. He said he'd honor the coupon if I could bring in the entire email page. I told him I didn't think I had it any more, he said "go check, if you don't have it I'll honor the coupon"

By the time I got back the <one> Cendyne was gone so I asked if they had more in back. They found one and brought it out. This one didn't have the "LTR..." model number on it. It had a serial number like this: "231205000769", and no other clues as to which brand it was. I reluctantly bought it (the manager took the coupon after I told him I didn't have the email any more), took it out to my car and opened it up. It says right on the top of the drive "Lite-on IT Corp., Model # LTR-32123S, Manufacture Date Jan, 2002" Far out, man! A 32x Lite-on for $30! Gotta love these Hot Deals!

BTW - The TDK CDrs that they had at my Staples were "Hecho en Mexico" Bummer, but I've got lots of 'em from BustBuy already.

good, at least I'm not the only one having problems with order status....stupid order ## doesn't match Zip code..I will call if they're still open.
edit: Excellent, going through Credit Checking

Oh, and the above post reminded me...
How do you tell the manufacturer of the TDK CDR's?

Was it, made is Taiwan: Tayo Yuden (bleh on spelling)
Korea: something else
Mexico: something else
USA: something else?

<--got Taiwanese TDK's

and on an older pack of TDK's, the label says made in USA, I think New York...

ok.for anyone who got the verbatim 321240A with the 12 digit serial number, it should be able to be converted to a liteon 32123S.

I did mine and it worked like a charm.

Instructions are found here:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?s=8f9912eef1f8c99f3467b3d3631c05e8&threadid=45977

You can get the .bin file for the liteon 32123S by following the link where it says this:
No? If your drive is a Lite-On drive you may check out my collection of firmwares
here.
Click the word "here", then go to the LTR-32123S directory, then to the bin directory and get the xs0u.rar file and un-rar it to get the bin.

Proceed at your own risk. It worked for me, but have no clue if it will for others. If you are unsure of how to proceed, you probably are best not.

lex, i got one of those verbatim drives...what are the benefits of turning it into a liteon? Doesn't it have the same capabilities regardless of the bios?

Soong and Dan - There is a problem with the Staples website. When I called to cancel my online Cendyne order I asked the CSR about it and he said that they are having a problem.

Re the TDK Cdrs. The place of manufacture is printed on the label. If it says "Made in Mexico", it's made in... guess where!. The ones to get say "Made in Japan" . The Taiwanese ones also aren't the ones you want.

OH well i just said f-- it, if i screw it up i'll just take it back!!!followed the instructions at cdfreaks per lexs advice (trust lex luthor! you nuts) and guess what?

Everything worked great, now recongnized as a liteon 32123s...i don't know what that give me but it sure makes that $30 seem well spent...god life is such a mental game...

Thanks lex...

I ordered from Staples.com at the store, thinking they had a pay in store/pick-up in store option. It turned out that there was only a pay in store option, I have to wait for them to be sent. (But, since I was using a $40 off 200 online purchases only coupon, I was willing to wait) My local Staples had a huge pile of the number only serial numbers (Lite-Ons?)..

My question.... Lite-on is better than the Mitsumi's, right? If so, and I get a Mitsumi sent to me, I'll see if I can't exchange it at B&M and get a Lite-On.

Does anybody know if this one will work on Win 2000 server? I see the desc saying it's not for server however if it's lite-on rebagged then it should work with Win 2000 server.

So does it work with Win 2000 Server? Thanks

Hi, newbie here, first post. I ran to staples today (thanks MysticMan1) to get the cheap Cendyne. ?s: I had a choice between two different serial #'s at the store. The one I bought had this serial # ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOX (there were several units w/ a long #): 9162D3703421402061JEE4 (22 DIGITS, thought it was a Mitsumi) & the serial # ON the drive itself is the only LAST DIGITS of the previous longer # on the outside of the box (then I thought it was a LiteON). Upon further inspection of the drive's label I found in tiny print the manufacturer to be I/Omagic Corporation (it says it was made April 2002 and the Model No.:32x12x48 CD-RW). Does anyone know anything about these drives, the quality, etc. I researched their site (http://www.iomagic.com/products/cdrewritable.htm) and it says they make a 32x10x40 and a 40x12x48 BUT NOT THE 32X12X48 IN MY HANDS?! I also came across a recent PCMag.com review of burners and the said the older I/O 24x10x40 "is the same mechanism as the one in the Lite-On LTR-24102B drive." (http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,81991,pg,5,00.asp).
Just as important, I wrote down the serial # of the one box in the store that wasn't 22 digits long on the outside of the box, it was ONLY 12 DIGITS LONG: 230205000965. I obviously did not buy this unit but spoke with a Staples rep. who said I could return my current unit to get another even after opened. Therefore does this shorter # that I can trade in my I/O magic in for mean its a LiteOn? Is it worth returning or more importantly which unit is better (my current I/Omagic or the Hopefully a LiteOn). What else could I get stuck w/ other than a LiteOn and would it be better or worse. Any info on either scenarios much appreciated.
Lastly, running win98 w/ upcoming upgrade to XP and using Roxio 5.1 Basic, do you know if this will work w/ the Cendyne drive or do you have to use the Nero (BTW no serial # on Nero disk or jacket)? Recommend installing drive b4 or after Xp upgrade? AND what does BM stand for?
WHEW, THANKS

1# I/O magic dosen't mfg CD-RWs they sell drives mfg by other companys.
2# that serial # shows it's a rebadged AOpen mfg drive.
3# the one with 12 digits no letters is a Lite-on mfg drive. Of all three drive this one is the most popular one.
4# most of this and other infomation is posted at the beginning of this thread.

I picked up one of these last night. They had both 12 and 22 digit s/n boxes - I grabbed one with 22 (thinking it might be a Mitsumi,) opened it, and found a 32x12x48 AOpen drive. Can anyone offer insight on this drive?

I put the cendyne cdrw in my cart along with the 80 gig drive the first morning of the sale. I used the 40 off 100 coupon. that evening, when I went to checkout, the 80 gig drive was oos, but my coupon did not get thrown out. So I paid 60 for the cdrw alone, before rebate. It remains to be seen whether they will catch this later.

Edit: they caught it, so ignore this post.

I have to agree with others here, finding a coupon code is easy, but finding a printable one to take to the store I cannot do. I'd much rather go to the store and make sure I get a lite-on then risk it with ordering online and have to exchange it later if it's not. Just give us the search terms to enter into google that will put the link on the first page!
