I just tried to flash my verbatim to a lite-on under win XP. But it doesn't work for me.

BEWARE the lite ons will flash, the verbatims marked drive mod VBT321240A SER /12 DIGITS & 2MB buffers will crash w/o repair.. these arent liteon or a open or mit. drives but yet to be determined..
the 1 thing for certain is when i flashed it using MTKFLASH x W /B XSOU.BIN it started to flash then i got ERR: FAILED TO OPEN INPUT FILE next was the A:\ prompt & a burner that no longer functions, the door wont even open & the "LITE stays ON" 24/7
re downloaded the software a 2nd time /same thing.. unless your unit is marked liteon somewhere i would hesitate on the firmware upgrade.

PS Bob that exe file wouldnt work unless it recognizes a lite on drive, cant find lite on drive is what i kept coming up with due to the verbatim firmware already installed

First of all, I'm very happy with my Verbatim -> Liteon 32123S. 1) It's not at all loud like some are complaining about with the Liteon's, 2) the drive tray eject speed at the tail end is practically unnoticable, and 3) it flashed to 32123S like a charm. I was able to burn a 600MB CD in under three minutes, and extracted 600MB to the harddrive at about 2 min 10 sec.

Make sure you get the flashing steps down:

1) Boot to DOS with a Win98 boot disk, using Shift+F5 to boot directly to a command prompt (i.e. do NOT load CD drivers)
2) Download the MTKFLASH prog and the Liteon firmware (XS0U.bin) from the link previously mentioned and put them on a separate floppy
3) Boot into DOS, switch floppies, and backup your current firmware by the following command:
MKTFLASH X R /B /M filename.bin (where X is either 1 = Primary Master, 2 = Primary Slave, 3 = Sec Master, 4 = Sec Slave)
4) Turn that Verbatim into a Liteon by the next command:
MKTFLASH X W /B XS0U.bin (where X = see above)

Boot into WinXP (or any OS) and you should be set. The instructions say not to use the secondary IDE channel, but I did and it wrote fine.

The first 32x Cendyne I bought had a serial number with 20 something digits and ended in JED1. I took it back to another staples, and looked for a lite on before I swapped it. If you want the Lite On, look for the Serial #LTR-32123S on the back of the box, under performance specifications.

I got a real dumb question, this is my first time dealing with rebates. I ordered this drive online and I know im suppose to send in a reipt. Where is the recept? The onlyp paper I got was this thing that said not an invoice across it. Does that count?

i got Verbatim today, flash to liteon w/o problem, the thing is nero come with the drive works with Verbatim only, it says i have to buy a retail version nero to get it work with liteon, what a shame, the drive is only cost me 30 bucks and the software?? 60? anybody

Yes, that paper is essentially your reciept. Make a copy of that paper, cut out the UPC form the box and make a copy of that also, then fill out the form and send it all (tapped/stapled together) through the snail mail. Unless it specifically asks for the original, send in copy and ALWAYS keep a copy of the rebate form, UPC, and reciept for your own records until you get your rebate.

just flashed my verbatim to lite-on after much angst
i backed up my firmware
then tried to flash to the new one and it exited with an error leaving me a crapped rom
i then tried and tried to put on the new one to no avail
i finally then put the file on another disk and for whatever reason it worked, it wrote to six banks or so and then complete successfully
w00t, now it works perfectly, couldnt be happier (i do have to say it is loud but its not like your burn cds all day long, just lasts for 3-4 minutes)

I always used betablocker, it's supposed to work better than amplify weak sectors. But I don't have to worry about that anymore hehe.

When ejecting the CD tray, the tray goes out fine for 3/4 of the way. On the last 1/4, the motor starts to whine and the tray slows down for the last 1/4.

Yes if you transfer files between devices on two seperate IDE channels it's faster then if both were on the same IDE channel. But it should still be plenty fast for 32x writing. Make sure DMA is enabled, it wasn't for mine when I first installed the Lite-on. You can tell if SMART Burn is being used if the light on the drive turns to orange when burning (it's red when writing).

Can a couple of people please check something out for me?

I had a verbatim converted to lite on. When I go to nero and go to recorder --> choose recorder and look at my drive info, it says the recorder buffer is 1984KB. I though that's weird that it's not 2MB.

I was curious what people with 1) Verbatim not converted, 2) True Lite on and 3) other Verbatims converted to liteon see.
Please include the firmware rev you flashed to and your version of Nero.
