I got the Lite-on and it came with Nero. Does anyone know if this Nero is specific to this particular burner or will it work with any Lite-on CD-RW?

Thanks

Oh almost forgot, if Nero is burner specific, what do I need to do to use two (this one and a Plex) CD-RWs in one box?

OH NO! It flashed it, and it said that everything went ok, but the light doesn't turn off, and the tray doesn't open or anything. I did the thing to backup the firmware, but i didn't see the "filename.bin" so there's a file called M on the floppy, which I HOPE is the old firmware, which I'll try loading, but if it isn't could someone send me the bin file of the old Verbatim for VBT321240A drive?
THANK YOU!

it still doesn't work after the M.bin file
It says the it erases teh firmware, then updates it, but the light stays on on the drive, and it doesn't do anything
if anyone knows any way to fix it, PLEASE tell me!

If you do not get a Lite-On, can you buy one from the Staples store and do a switcharoo? Does the drive has any barcode that ties it to the box?

Anybody having trouble with their drives not being recognized in win XP or any other operating system for that matter, should go to the Nero home page and download the latest update of Nero for their OS and install it. This has worked for me on two machines already.......... My drives were both Lite-ons and I am running XP Pro. The version that came with the drives was 5.5.50 I think, and I upgraded to 5.5.78. I just checked the Nero site and the latest release is now 5.5.82 and when you install it the software will check to see if you have a previous version of Nero (Has to be 5.5 or better to be entitled to the free upgrade) installed on your machine and will automatically update the software. I hope this helps anybody who may be having this problem.

Those people with questions or needing help with the Lite-on and rebadged Verbatim Lite-on drives check out the two Lite-on CD-RW forums, one is on cdfreaks.com LINKand another one is on cdrinfo.com LINK.

It may not be to late, check your local Staples stores many still have a few 32x CenDyne drives in stock and there's a $15/$100, $30/$150 Staples email coupon available to use in the stores.

FYI, the first link has an extra "https:" at the beginning. I've started reading those forums, and apparently some Lite-On 32x can be "overclocked" to 40x. And no, unfortunately, it's not the model we are all getting .

and even though in hte instructions, it has the filename as a bin file, the files I download are .exe, so when i flash the f/w, i type in "MTKFLASH # W /B XS0U.exe --correct? since there IS no bin file...?

YESSS!!! IT WORKS AGAIN!

Ok, the .exe files are ONLY for windows, and ONLY once it recognizes the drive as a Liteon...

[blatenty taking Z0ner's instructions, but adding to them a little]

1) Boot to DOS with a Win98 boot disk, using Shift+F5 to boot directly to a command prompt (i.e. do NOT load CD drivers) --(Boot disks can be found by doing a search at google.com for "DOS boot disks" --5th link was good)
2) Download the MTKFLASH prog and the Liteon firmware (XS0U.bin) and put them on a separate floppy
3) Boot into DOS, switch floppies, and backup your current firmware by the following command:
MKTFLASH X R /B /M filename.bin (where X is either 1 = Primary Master, 2 = Primary Slave, 3 = Sec Master, 4 = Sec Slave)--this is the IDE channel the CDRW is on
4) Turn that Verbatim into a Liteon by the next command:
MKTFLASH X W /B XS0U.bin (where X = see above)
Do NOT do this above step with a .exe file...I did it, and got really depressed..

Dan,

Great instructions.

I think the separate floppy is important. I (and others) seem to have seen some sort of read errors when loading the firmware off the boot floppy.

Anyone who has to ask further how to flash and can't figure it out from your instructions shouldn't flash.

Can you tell me what nero now reports your recorder buffer as? It's no longer 2MB. It's slightly less for some reason.

As far as answering people as to the advantages of flashing:
1) Some programs (EZCD, retrospect, etc) don't recognize the drive as a verbatim. Until that software is updated, you couldn't use the Verbatim with it. Pretty much everything recognizes the drive if it's a liteon.
2) Liteon updates their firmware much more often than verbatim. You can see here what more recent firmware fixes/does (it's the LTR-32123S):
http://www.liteonit.com.tw/english-load-firmware.htm#cd-rw
The liton's smartburn technology has a database of cd media and it throttles your drive down if the media doesn't match media in the firmware's database of media. So where it says match more media, it means additional cd media types have been added to the database so it's more likely that the media you use will be in there.

All the credit should go to z0ner, he put the instructions together, i just tweaked them a little

It also shows my buffer as 1984 KB, but I don't care, since it has buffer underrun anyways..
I'm just in the euphoria stage after feeling really crappy from "breaking" it, and then extreme happiness from "fixing" how you "broke" it

Dan, I just jumped on this thread and as I was reading I was horrified to see your earlier post. I'm glad you got it up and running! I've got the same 1984KB buffer, but like you said that's what SMART BURN is for I'm not thrilled with the DAE, so I'll continue to rip from my UltraPLEX. Certainly can't complain about the 32X burns

Nero occupies a small portion of the buffer. This makes the buffer appear smaller.

Yeah, I was in the store in Ithaca this afternoon. They had about 20 boxes up above the glass display cases. The guy handed me a Verbatim, and after throwing it back at him, I asked for a Lite-On. He looked at most of them until he found me a Lite-On, so there may not be too many Lite-On's left in Ithaca.

Received the following today:
32X Cendyne
Sterling Modem
Belkin Surge
Altec Lansing Speakers
Netgear 4 port Hub

After rebates and taxes my cost will be 47.64

I just noticed that they charged me 29.99 for the modem while their ad states 19.99. I will call today from work and get a price adjustment of $10.00.

Weird order process and shipping info. Stated different ship dates yet today there were three boxes for me when I got home from work. Can't see how they will make money from this deal what with free shipping and all.

Will try to sell the modem and the hub. Don't expect much money from them though.

I spent a lot of time trying to order this on the phone on Sunday and still had to call Staples on Monday regarding it.

Staples order system seems to have had problems over the weekend.

Anyway I am pleased with the deal that I got.

For all who have install this drive...how fast are you able to do a cd-to-cd copy? (on-the-fly) The time I'm getting is horrible, like 12 min at 32X. If I do a copy to hd first, the time writing to hd is ~6 min and writing to cdrw is ~8 min.

My CD-ROM speed is 44X and is config as primary slave while the CDRW is config as secondary master. Any idea wats going on here? Thanks.
