Hey guys, I just flashed my Cendyne / lite-on to the latest version of the firmware (VXS0U) from (VSX05) and noticed a dramatic change in the Nero Cd speed tests. The Seek times went from the 400ms range to 78ms (random seek) and the start speed went from 8.23 to 16.30 on the same exact disc.
Just thought I would let you know...........

I'm reposting this since some people might have missed it the first time. Someone else originally posted this info:

(Ok, I just figured out how to fix it. For anyone else having the same problem (Nero only thinking your CD Writer can go to 24x or any other speed for that matter):

Q30
Why Nero recording software only allow me to chose 8X or 16X speed after I upgraded to your latest F/W?

A30
With the F/W upgrade, your current Nero version may not recognized your drive as high speed recording device. You may solve your problem by doing the following:
1).Start your Nero application
2).Place blank disc in the drive (You must use a media certified to support your drive?s maximum recording speed. i.e.: you need a 40X media for your LTR-40125S drive)
3).In Nero, click on file -> preference, select Cache tab, then select test all drive speeds. Or simply go to disc copy menu, under the copy tap, check the dirve?s maximum speed. This way, Nero will understand your drives? maximum performance, and allow to choose that speed in the future

(Note: * Nero Ver. 5.5.5.6 or later do NOT support writing speed below 8X. If you have chose ?high speed?option during installation, then your choice will only start from 8X. ** If the above step did NOT solve your problem, then you will need to un-install Nero, remove Nero directly manually from Windows Explorer and reinstall Nero.)

In case anyone didn't catch that: Go to File --> Preferences -- > Cache, and hit the "Test all drive speeds" button. For this to work you MUST have a blank CD-R in your drive that is capable of being recorded at your writer's max speed)

Quick question for anybody with time to answer. With my new burner I can now record CDRW's at 12x. My CDRW's are labled '4-10x'. Can I burn on these at 12x, or do I need to get newer 12x CDRW's? Thanks.

Back in stock online NYC area-4 day wait. Staples says they'll mail a properly dated receipt, if the one sent has the (expired) late delivery date only.

damn.....i keep having buffer runnning out on me. I got the true LiteOn 32123S model. Everytime I test it in 16x or above in Nero5.5.8.2, or Fireburner2.1.6, the cache runs out, and gives a buffer error. :/ It's depressing seeing the cache running at 100%, and then going progressively lower.....until it hits zero. It spikes like powre surges. Sometimes it'd charge back up to 100%, only to drop 50% in 2sec. I can get by using 8x burn, cache depletes to 0, then bounces back, but it hangs in there just barely w/o any errors.

I've been using my 2x for a long time, and never have I seen fluctuation I'm seeing now, i'ts always been 97% or high, and holding stable. Is this a common thing to 16x, 24x or 32x drives? I don't think it's normal, as there's no way 32x would be of any use other than making coasters. The drive is slaved to primary IDE, an IBM DeskStar 10GB. It shouldn't have any problems, as my other IBM Deskstar slaves the Maxtor 80GB just fine. Any ideas? Maybe I should go back and exchange a drive.

EDIT: I was just able to do 16x in Fireburner, but like above, cache meter goes up and down...like a rollercoaster ride. It seems the only reason it worked in Fireburner is because I can test using BurnProof. And the burnproof slowed the drive down until cache caught up. When I did tests in NERO, it wouldn't let me test unless Burnproof was unchecked.. :/

gundam,

Do you have an "older" pc? At 32x, a lot more stress is put on the pc to get the data out to the cd and that might be why the meter is all over the place.

You sure you enabled "smartburn" in nero? It sounds like you might not have it enabled. If the meter goes to 0, smartburn kicks in and saves you.

I didn't do burnproof under Nero, because if I enable it, it wouldn't let me do a test burn. when BURNProof is checked, the speed test, and test burn are grayed out. I was able to get a completed test burn in 8x in Nero. And in Fireburner, I am able to burn at 16x, that's because burnproof works with testing, and whenever buffer runs out, the drive seems to slow down and stop burning until buffer catches up again. Of course in 32x it's more stop than go.....which I don't think it's natural for a 32x burner to do.

I have ZoneAlarm firewall running, and that's the only thing going. I'm burning data from secondary IDE slave, Maxtor 5400rpm drive, to primary IDE slave, the LiteOn 32x12x40. I suppose it could be a bit problematic, since they're both slaves, and resides on different channels. I have 1.2Ghz, 512mb DDR, so spec shouldn't be a problem, and the Epox KT226 is as stable as can be. I'm really puzzled by this. I've updated my firmware to the latest, which also lowered my buffer to 1956kb. But this happened before flashing,...which is the reason I flashed it.

Overall I suspect it might be IDE problems...but at 16x, the drive isn't asking for alot of data. Or maybe LiteOn's buffer's damaged to begin with. I'll see if I can exchange one in store.

GundamF91:
Is DMA for the drive enabled? Only my old 2x, or 4x media is limited to 16x, everything else burns at 32x. Test image speed to HD and HD to CD with CloneCD, elby.ch

Fricking@a@#@$%.....it's the DMA! I thought it'd be enabled automatically. I'm using Win2k Pro btw. It wasn't enabled, and now that I've got it fixed....it tested to 32x just fine. 700mb in 3.5min. This is awesome! thanks. While you're at it....where is it do I enable/disable "auto insertion notification"? I couldnt' find that property in Device Mgr anywhere.

I'm not sure about this drive, seeing how Staples lost my order somewhere in transit, but if you are having problems with WinXP Pro and this CDRW try disabling DMA. For some reason XP Pro automaticly enables it on all ROM's including CDRW's. I had a ton of problems with my Plex 1210A and Yamaha 3200EBEK until I did this.

Finally received the drive that I order EARLY Sunday morning! :| They were sooo slow in processing the order that by the time they got to my order the drive was OOS in the local area. They finally shipped a drive to me from a warehouse across country. Anyway, the drive was a true Lite-On. Tried it on a full 700 MB CD, and it got done in under 4 min. Very cool.

Okay, now that we've sorted out the problems, here's another question. Is it good to burn CDR this fast??? I've read different articles saying faster burning results in shalower pits than slower burns. Some tech site actually used microscope to compare the 2x and 4x pits...and they were different in depth using same exact media and burner. Also as laser powers up and down, it's not as precise as slower burning, resulting in elongated pits rather than round pits they're suppose to be. Elongated pits could give read errors to CD-ROM, or DVD players, making the disc less compatible.

Anyways, that's just the rumor I've read on this subject. Maybe I'll do 16x for the most part.

tblon,

Of course you can just use that file if you already have a liteon......the reason for the whole thing with dos and the floppys is because you can't flash a verbatim to a liteon from windows.

FYI for those of us with Windows XP. Upgrading the firmware of the CDRW will make XP think you have a new drive. This is important for Windows Product Activation (WPA). Keep in mind that too many "changes" will make XP think it is on a new machine and lock it up. Check out this site for more detailed info on WPA.

I have XP pro,and have changed burners, sound cards and flashed firmware on my cdrw and dvd! I even updated my system bios,no
activation! Of course I have had XP for 5 months, and I think 3 months is the magic number for this "feature"to shut off!

You would need a model 32125W in order to do that. I don't think anyone of us are that lucky, as everyone seems to be getting the 32123S instead.

yep, we've been getting 32123s mostely. besides, you dont' want to overclock a burner....a few seconds difference isn't worth shortening the life span of the burner.

I'm having problems with mine not being able to go over 16x without buffer underrunning like crazy. I've tried alot of different things with no luck but some folks on another forum pointed out that mine was doing P-CAV when it should be doing Z-CLV. Can you guys run the write test with CD Speed that came with nero and see if it's doing P-CAV or not? what mine looks like in CD Speed
