Do the Verbatim and Liteon drives look cosmetically identicle? Same face plate? My guess is yes if the Verbatim is a rebadged Liteon.

From what i heard the verbatim has a huge V on the front face plate. Since I have a liteon I can't confirm. I can tell you my true liteon only has 32x12x40x next to the eject button. That's it for art work.

Anyone have a review site for recording media with the liteon or all cdrw's for that matter. I'm just wondering how generic is generic...Staples...imation etc. TIA

Good luck..

This is the exact drive I got. I would like to flash it for compabality sake but I'm hesitant. I wouldn't mind doing it but this guy says he can't reflash it back, which is odd.

Anyone else got this drive and had problems or successes?

i got this several times and was about to kill myself!
I tried multiple times and eventually it worked (had to use boot disk and 1 disk with the bin on it). I just tried a bunch of times and it eventually worked (thank god)

the 32125W is a newer 32x cdrw...made after April 2002...it is not a rumor whether these compainies that rebadge have been using the 32125W is unclear..I did see in one othese threads at least one person or two got a 32125W....

they (32123S and 32125W) are different drives since these use a different mediatek chipset....

Lex Luthor
.......Are you sure Liteon is still making the 32123S..makes little sense to keep using an older chipset..downclocking would be easier....also how can you make the claim no one is getting the newer 32125W.....

I bet in a month or so all the rebadgers will have the 32125W and not the 32123S..but this is my personal speculation

If i recall correctly that one person had a Verbatim drive and was speculating for some reason that his drive was a 32125W. I really think that he was mistaken, but let's see if he can prove me wrong.

Morph:

Yes, I was speculating, since I had no April Verbatim peer review and went first.
The "W" flash didn't work properly, so I then used the "S" flash and all went well.

Point me somewhere, anywhere that shows CONFIRMED that a person got the 32125W drive from this staples deal.

So what's all the hubbub about getting a W model? So it uses P-CAV writing method. What's that, maybe 20 sec faster writing a full CD? I don't see the big deal.

has anyone who has received the AOpen model noticed that it sounds like a jet fighter when it kicks in on boot up? Can I assume this to be normal behavior for this drive?

Just got mine - Verbatim model.

Any particular reason to flash it to a Lite-on?

Got mine. Turned out to be a Verbatim aka Lite-On aka Cendyne. I'll call it Bert. Burns discs nicely and surprisingly quietly. Somewhere in these 500+ posts there was probably a reason given for flashing it, but I can't remember what it was so I won't.

Thanks again for the deal.

I flashed mine (obviously if you read my earlier posts) and *supposedly* the Lite-on burns faster, but one thing that I know for sure is that Lite-On releases new firmwares faster than Verbatim, plus Lite-On has the Media Checker thingy so that it will detect the fastest speed that the CD you put in there can handle. So if on the label is says 16x, it *might* be able to burn at 24x or even 32x, and the Lite-On will be able to tell this.

Hope that helped

I just tried my Verbatim last night before cutting out the UPC and sending off the rebate.

DOA. Green light comes on with power and can't eject the tray. Lite-on's support site seems to indicate it's flash is dead. Going to exchange it at Staples if they have any left.

As a backup plan does anyone have a copy of the Verbatim flash which I can try flashing to my drive?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks! Got 'em.

Better yet, though, they exchaged the DOA unit for a Lite-on. Already flashed to the latest XS0X release!

did you try flashing it with the exe file?
When I tried flashing it from DOS with the exe file, I got the same results, it's because the exe is ONLY for windows....use the bin file for the DOS conversion (you need to do the bin, the exe is for when it alreadys sees the drive as a lite-on)

Has anyone noticed how pathetic the prices are for these things on Ebay right now? I used to be able to make $30 a drive after rebate, but now it hardly seems worth my effort when they are going for between $50-$60. After fee's, that's about $15 profit if you're lucky.

I don't get it really because the 24x drives were selling for more money just a month or so ago. What gives?

That old fashioned economics principle.... supply and demand. This deal is VERY easy to put together. Why would someone pay $60 for this drive unless they were uninformed?
