well, I got two of them from two different staples with price match from new egg. One store was really easy. Other store was kind of hassel. It took about 10 minutes for the manager to verify the website. Any way I converted one of them to liteon 48X. It seems to be okay in the beginning but when I tried to burn like 5 CD in a row, the burner kind of got flakey. It froze the computer once and other time it wouldn't finish writing and got stuck at 99% and just hanged. I had to stop the program. I think the heat may be the issue when you keep burning without cooling it down. But for occasional burn it should not be a problem. Any way I converted mine back to verbatim 40x. There is less than 20 second difference between 48x "using the real liteone 48x" and verbatim 40x. Plus if it breaks within a year I could kiss my warranty good bye if the writer's firmware is liteon.

Blown out of the water at the Howe Ave, Sacramento location:| Mgr. proceeded to start quoting their pricematch policy "If our price is lower after rebate/we don't pricematch lower than a final rebated price" rag.... Wasn't going to waste my time, so I used the $10 off $10 coupon, and bought a spindle of 24X Sony CD-Rs for $.56 after an $8 rebate BTW, that store has the 24X CDs in place of the 16X ones that are shown in the advertisement.

Guess I'll have to go to the other 3 in the area, and try the burner....but rapidly losing hope. I suppose I could just buy a couple more spindles, and send the rebates to friends....

you can always go backwards...even back to the verbatim firmware. btw, i burned about 8 cd's (between nero and cdrwin)in a row and had zero problems...make sure it's not another issue (make sure your using the latest versions of nero and cdrwin). i also ran a couple speed tests and overburn ones and didnt' ahve any issues. good luck with your ventures.

Following lRageATMl guide, i end up with a Lite-On-Ltr 48125w {:-> thanks again for your help.
When i loaded a 32X i was able to burn 626MB in 2:48 @ 48x (7,200kb/s).
Then i run Nero CD Speed on the same cd and got:
Speed 21-46XC AV (39.9 average)
Start 21.29x
End 46.99x
Now, i'm sure that this will mean more to some of you than it does to me but i think it's great speed!
Now, the less pleasant part:
1/ The tray is really noisy and rattle when open/close. Anybody else has that too?
2/ After upgrading to Nero 5.9, when i start the CD audio feature and try to select some .mp3, when i click on "Add" i'm getting an "out of memory" message, then i have to force nero to close and reboot to free the MAPI something. Since i have plenty of Ram, it can't be the problem. So far, i de-re-installed nero 2 times but to no avail....any hints greatly appreciated.

that's much faster then me. I can only average 31.25X, start is 21.15X and end is much much lower. I wonder why? i think it has something to so with my current setup of how my cd-r is on my system. that is, I have my two ide ports, which I have 2hdd's on, plextor burner, dvd-rom on, then there's my raid that I have an additional 2 hdd's on a raid-0 array. then so I could fit my other hdd in and the new burner, I have a promise ultra 66 pci card in there. I'll try switching the plextor burner for the "liteon" to see if I can yeild better speeds...i let you know onece I get a chance to get home.

You can buy the drive on-line, but the PM will not fly no-line, to have any chance of getting the PM done you have to do it in the store where Staples PM policy is not always strictly followed.

Tried to post this last night, but my old login got lost. Staples in Foothill Ranch (So. Orange County) had the Verbatim burners clearanced @$54.99. I applied a $10 off of $40, making it $44.99 less the $40 rebate - grand total: $4.99! Rippin'! There still may be a few floatin around out there @ this clearance price. Also got a $39 PNY nvidia PCI 3D accellerator video card for my kid for $19.99 less a $15 rebate making it another $4.99er. It was a good day for me @ Staples.

Sweet! I'm going to call around and see if any stores in L.A. are selling the 40x Verbatim at that clearance price.

Doh!

Just called Foothill Ranch and there was 1 left, he rang it up and it came to $109.99

How could it have been on clearance?

Can someone PM me that has a receipt they'd scan for me?

For the people that were successful doing this, did they cashier/mgr just not try to put up a fight at all about it, or did you have some good comebacks (and what where they?)?

Sorry, don't have access to a scanner now to send reciept. The burners @ Foothill Ranch were on a sale table by the front of the store. It rang up @ full price when I bought it but the clerk did something to change it to $54.99. If you're close by, might be worth it to drive there. Good luck!

i came back from staples half successful. When they pricemated they did 100% instead of 110%, they also added on $5 for shipping, then they wouldnt let me use the $10 off coupon because they said you cant combine them =( anywyas total was like $80 with tax, send in the rebate for $40 and it comes out to $40

Will I stopped at my local Staples store in L.A. today but no 40x Verbatim CDRW drive on clearance there, that one you got must have been a manager's special clearance item just in that store.

MysticMan1: It seems that Newegg took down the retail version of the Verbatim drive. Can I PM with them still? I don't think my local staples manager would go for it. =\

I don't think the staples manager will go for it either, unless he doesn't see the part that says OEM. The sell at staples doesn't end until Sat. (7-27) maybe Newegg will put the retail version back up before then, so keep checking Newegg's web site.
