Review: http://www.techradar.com/us/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/nokia-lumia-635-1239373/review

We own the Nokia Lumia 521/520 (AT&T version) and love them both. Our Nokia 521 was recently activated on an Ultra.me prepaid plan and works great. The Nokia 520 hasn't been activated, it's used a portable media player, remote control, security webcam and offline GPS navigation.

FAQ:

Is this awesome? Yes.
Should you buy this? Yes.
Should you ask your wife first? No, I will assume the blame.

FYI:

SIM-locked to AT&T, BUT that means you can still use it with a SIM from any MVNO riding AT&T's network.
To unlock for use on another carrier, you need to either use this phone on AT&T GoPhone for at least 6 months, or pay a third-party unlocking service ($40-$50), assuming that you even get an IMEI that can be unlocked (there are a number of IMEI ranges that none of the unlocker services can handle). It also unlocks for AT&T post paid accounts (Tested 10/14).

Yikes! 30 day return on these with free shipping both ways. No biggie.

Its a GREAT phone. Limited in apps is the only drawback. My wife and I both have one and Windows 8.1 is outstanding on a phone as an operating system.

Keep refreshing a few times a day, as this seems to be going in and out of stock.

Thanks, RossMAN. Just picked one up to go with the 521 I got from the $19 MetroPCS sale last thread.

May actually activate this one on Straight Talk, never did get around to getting an unlock code for the MetroPCS 521. It works great for what I wanted to use it for as is. Has anyone unlocked one successfully? (and if so Id appreciate knowing what company they used).

Ripped from SD wiki:

SIM-locked to AT&T. Unlock from eBay costs an additional +$50 plus

Yes, offline HERE maps should work. In fact, if all you want is offline HERE, you can now get that on Android for free:

If the above is correct and AT&T is solid in your area I would highly recommend Cricket, especially if you qualify for their $100 offer.

So the offline GPS works exactly like a stand-alone GPS unit? What maps does it use? I'm thinking this may be a cheap alternative to a Garmin.

2nd Cricket. They are having some LTE capacity issues though, hopefully that'll be worked out soon. If you need a $25 referral, PM me...

You mean their proxy server? I thought they just ride on AT&T LTE.

And OP thanks for the deal. Wow MS is really doing a 180.

Thanks Rossman, picked one up for the wife. I've been happy with my 520. My only complaint is that the traffic info isn't nearly as good as google maps. MS needs more sales like this to get more market share. Lack of apps is going to kill the windows phone

The 520 has traffic? Hmmn, is it part of the "HERE" suite or do you download an app?

Hmm. Thinking of doing this as I'm on Pageplus right now with an old flip phone. I don't use it much and it costs me around $12/month just to keep the number active. How easy is it to port my number? And what are the cheapest plans available for this phone?

Can someone explain to me how this would work when activated by att? We need to get my FIL a new phone, he just needs voice/text and occasional email.

He will be charged for a data plan with this phone.

These are great phones BTW.... but after 2 years of the windows app store sucking balls it is time to move to android.

You can download by the state from the app store. Not sure how the search function works in offline mode.

I was on Pageplus with my flip phone until mid-February 2014. My plan was $10 for 100 minutes. I had to do another deal within 120 days or all my minutes would expire. Unused minutes would roll over. When I got my Nokia Lumia 520 (locked to AT&T), I decided to keep my old flip phone for a while and see if I got 1/2 decent coverage with the AT&T Lumia 520, so I have a new number. Keeping your old number should be easy.

I'm on Airvoice now with the Lumia phone, cancelled the Pageplus account, forfeiting my minutes. The Airvoice plan I'm on is $10/month, I have automatic refill set up through Prepaidonline, the same way I did with my Pageplus account, it is a bit cheaper that way and I don't have to attend to renews.

My Airvoice plan includes data and voice/text, and unused usage rolls over. There's a cheaper plan I'm thinking I'll investigate with Airvoice which you renew every 3 months instead of monthly, also $10/month, and I'm going to maybe convert to that because I already have ~$60 worth of unused minutes. Hopefully, I can use those accumulated ~$60 worth of minutes with the $10/3month plan if I switch. I just use very little data (use wifi at home a lot), and rarely make calls with the cell phone.

AT&T works OK for me when not at home, but in the house my coverage is spotty at best and I don't make calls on the Lumia at home, I just use my land line. Verizon's better around here, a lot better, but the Lumia's don't support Verizon the last time I checked. Anyway, my phone was $30 Thursday morning, which strikes me as an incredible deal. It's my first smartphone and I have little reason to complain, a lot to cheer about.
