Great Buy... Lots of techies know about the deal and so there are plenty of forums to go to for help and support. You almost don't even need a warranty with all the help offered from various places.
The laptop has been dissected and all the images can be found at various places on the internet.
Cool Stuff. If I had the money I'd buy this one. Unfortunately My $$$ has been a bit slim.

Averatec's website shows that Walmart.com and Office Depot.com sell their products, however: Walnart.com only has HP notbeooks, and OD does not seem to have this model.

OD does sell Averatec but more expensive, XP1600 based model. Walmart used to carry them, looks like not anymore though.

BTW, I am going for it. Small lightweight notebook at that price, I'd be a fool not to.

my gf has the sotec (same thing basically) .. its pretty good ?? give me specific questions.

General gripes others have mentioned:

Keyboard .. sometimes gotta press harder than usual to get output .. and backspace button is tiny, no page up/page down (direct) keys .. maybe other stuff but like i said, its hers

Sound .. wow, max volume is DAMN low .. headfones please

but $500 for a 4lb notebook ?? thats CHEAP. It's decently fast .. could use more ram of course.

Note, she has the 20gb hd / DVD/CDRW .. she doesn't need HD space .. AIM/Word/Web.

my friend bought one. after like a week, he started hearing sounds from the laptop. scratchy noises. probably not hard drive, maybe just a fan. but anyway, that's annoying.
he also said it's too hot to leave on his lap for a long period of time
and the keyboard is unusable. can't hit the backspace key when you're typing regularly

about half a dozen friends of mine use these at school and have reported no problems. i look at this as a self-serviceable item, considering the price. kind of like building your own computer, you shouldn't be afraid of opening up the hood (warranty be damned).

For $500, I have absolutely NO complaints.

For $1000, I start getting upset, and move to the 3150P.

For $1500, I buy a Thinkpad... Or 3 Averatecs, and sell two of them.

Whatever, I'm happy.
