No, it's not a hardware modem. As noted above, you'll be pretty hard-pressed (even in the Hot Deals forum) to turn up a hardware-based modem for this kind of money. I'm no expert in this area, but as I recall, if the modem description says it also supports Linux, then you can be sure that it's hardware-based. External modems are usually hardware-based (with exceptions).

I have the modem blaster and its crap. It wouldn't work at all with the computer I bought it for but it would work in another. I get frequent disconnects with it in the computer its in now. Meanwhile, the USR modem I have works fine in both computers.

frys bay area has an internal modem card free after rebate $20- $20 Rebate (Item #3360052).

dont know the make or model though.

just saw the barebones card in the frys friday flyer yesterday.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but this news may be helpful to those who bought this modem, especially since AT&T Worldnet just started testing V.92 support in some areas this week.

Best Data has just posted new drivers and modem on hold software for this modem.

The Win2K/XP driver isn't digitally signed but I installed it and it seemed to improve my connection speed a little, or at least that's what Windows tells me.

Despite various reviews that trash this modem, it's been working fine for me, although I haven't tried the on-hold feature.

And FYI, OfficeMax will have another $10 rebate on these modems starting September 29, although I have no idea what the selling price will be that week to go along with it.

Personally, I think the Agere (Lucent) V.92 modems are excellent. Very reliable and consistently high connection speed. With todays faster computer, the hardware based vs. software modem isn't that critical. Newegg occassionally has these in their refurb section for $9 with free shipping. I bought three last time this came up and all three are working very happily in computers I built for people. Not sure if this Best Data has this particular chipset...
