Eh, never mind, it's gone up a little from 3 / 5 stars, and the first bunch of reviews now are almost all positive (yesterday it seemed like almost all the recent ones were "DOA" repeating over and over). Yesterday it looked terrible, today it looks about average.

It is amazing how both the price and the user ratings have fluctuated so much over the course of just a few days (or even hours). I don't know that I've ever seen this sort of behavior to this extent. As a potential purchaser of this drive, I have to say that this is a pretty crappy experience.

You have to understand that literally hundreds (if not thousands) of these things have been sold in the last week or so given the return to pre-flood pricing. As is almost always the case, the negative voices are the loudest. Most people don't order a HDD, plug it in, have it work perfectly, and think, "I need to write a review!" They just go about their business. But for those who get a defective drive (which I'm guessing it at or close to the standard rate for platter drives of this size), their first response is to demand justice to any/all who will listen, which usually leads to nasty reviews. Just my $0.02, but I wouldn't read too much into the most recent reviews. And in my experience, both Newegg and Amazon are pretty good with returns.

FWIW, mine arrived yesterday ($90 at NE ordered last week), and I intend to test it this weekend. I'll report back, but if mine is DOA, I'll return it to Newegg and move on.

Seagate drives of the 7200.11, 7200.12, and maybe 7200.13 generations have very serious issues (I mean NDA-level serious, so I can't say much more). The problems don't show up until the drive has been in service for just under a year, though that's for enterprise drives running enterprise loads.

We haven't seen these issues with the 7200.14 generation so far. They would have showed up by now... *probably*. I took a chance and got 6 for my media tank.

Now, this assumes that the desktop drive is the same as the enterprise drive, except with lower-binned heads and platters, and possibly lower-spec'ed mechanics. This is true for most generations, but not all.

The next generation has a lot of improvements... on paper. We'll see.

I heard one "chirp" when first started testing
so upgraded to latest version firmware CC4H
- haven't heard any more chirps since (yet)

Lots of gripes about chirping on these drives inc 1TB and 2TB models like here (which the latest f/w is supposed to fix)

I imagine it must drive them nuts with all the chirping

I'm just wondering - what is the chirp caused by ...and how can a firmware update fix it?
