<< Acer and Aopen are two different companies. >>

The reason many people think they are the same company is because Acer uses many of AOPEN's products under their name. Many Acer CD-ROMs are actually rebadged AOPENs. In fact most of Acer's pre-built computers use AOPEN parts all around.

:|I ordered it on 12:30AM 03-17, the CSR told me that it was in stock and gave the the delivery date which was yesterday. But even today I still haven't received it. I called OM this morning, the CSR said that it was backordered and should be shipped tomorrow. When I asked her why, her cold hard answer was "IT IS BACKORDERED IN MY COMPUTER AND WILL SEND OUT TOMORROW"!
I hate company can't honor its word.

<< Acer and Aopen are two different companies. >>

not according to the aopen homepage.
aopen homepage
from the linked page,

<< AOpen manufactures computer components as part of the successful $7 billion Acer group. >>

prior to getting on this deal, I didn't know acer had optical drives. i was surprised to find out that acer now has yet another subsidiary, benq that produces mainly peripherals like aopen. clicking the cdrw link on the acer homepage now sends you to the benq cdrw product page.

i am going to OM today or tomorrow. i will most certainly exchange for another cendyne. i figured that the deal is too good to pass, and i should be fine if i keep exchanging until i get a working drive.

the following has nothing to do with the acer/aopen relationship or this deal, but ...
ScrapSilicon, thanks for your kind words.

damn... i feel that i'm gonna be getting the acer. all the OM stores i been to in NJ have stocked acers outta their arse. is the acer that bad? i have a 8x smart&friendly cdr that burns cd's in about 11mins. if the acer is gonna take around 6mins to burn... i should be happy, but i still feel ripped off. anyone have anything GOOD to say about acers? come on... make me feel better

**Lite-On Alert!**

I too was one of the unfortunate few who got the crappy Acer drive. I didn't even bother opening it and was going to return it...but just on a whim I decided to swing by Fry's....and wouldn't you know it they had the CenDyne 24x drive. Only one left! And miracle of miracles it was a Lite-On! So if you got the Acer and you have a Fry's in your area be sure to check it out. For some reason my Fry's had stacks and stacks of the CenDyne 16x and 40x but only the one 24x. I guess word has gotten out about CenDyne 24x being Lite-ons. Don't know how else to explain that.

BTW, in case anyone is interested in an Acer version my local Fry's should have a brand new sealed box 24x CenDyne Acer on their shelf in a couple days.

Hey guys, whats up with that 80%+ CPU utilization? Is that a normal thing for IDE burners(I got a scsi burner right now and it doesnt go above 5% ever)? Im planning to take that liteon and put it in a firewire enclosure to take the strain off the IDE bus.

I see newegg has a firewire cdrw enclosure for $90! Man that's expensive. For $30-$40 it would be worth it, but $90? Ouch.

Remenber that $35 for a 24x Acer mfg drive (which is less than most CD-ROM drive cost) is still a hell of a good deal.
Wait until next week when this deal is over and people are paying $50 to $70 for CD-RW drives that are not Lite-ons, the $35 Acer drive will look petty good then.

Just received a Verbatim badged Liteon (whoo hoo!)

Haven't seen a clear explanation of why we need to flash Verbatim drives over to Liteon....

Why would I want to zero out my chances of getting it fixed under warrantee?

What features will I be missing with a Verbatim badged drive vs Liteon?

I can't attest to features, but I did see a 5 sec better time after flashing to the latest Lite-On 5s57 FW. Of course, this may be due to other differences than the FW upgrade, and 5 seconds is almost not worth mentioning. I only say it because, like overclocking, getting the most out of any piece of hardware without spending extra money is a hot deal. Weigh that against possibly voiding your warrantee. Who's going to send it in for warrantee anyway when sub $50 deals out there every week for newer and possibly faster drives coming up?

Yeah, the Acer drive isn't a lite-on but it's not so horrible either!! I can burn a 700MB disk in 5 minutes 6 seconds (DMA is enabled). The cd's play fine in my finicky dvd player (mp3 format or audio) and I've had no problems whatsoever so far with my unit. I agree with MysticMan1, for $35 it's an absolute steal. I paid $250 for a 4x burner 3 years ago and I'm upgrading from an 8x burner right now. I have no complaints.

Let's hear some more good feedback about the Acer!

Well it seems most of the `Cendyne` drives are Acer now but the guy at my local OM said there was one Teac drive in the back so I took it for better or for worse

Can you return the Burner after you already open it, and the reason is that you think your Acer is no good (my situation )

i was in the OM store the other day and while i was waiting for the worker there to check the serial numbers for me, i looked at their return policy and it sounds the same as BB's. if u r not satisfied with ur purchase, return it within 30 days with all packaging and manuals. or something like that. this was for the east brunswick, nj store.

I believe the return period is 14 days for electronic items, but yes, you should be able to return the drive in that period for ANY reason other than you damaged it or something similar.

I don't understand why this is such a great deal and everyone is after the Lite_on and so forth. You cannot get this price at a regular retail store and most, if any online store. Every time you return a drive in exchange for another, the store loses out on money. They make minimal if at all any profit selling these at this price. I can understand if the drive is defective but none of the Acer or Aopen drives are defective so forth but yet you are looking for a certain brand and then you turn around and just keep the drive for a few months then sell it here on the for sale forums. What do you stand to gain by doing this? For $34 dollars after rebate you are all putting too much effort into name brand and could not have care less about OM. Don't forget that OM is the one who brings the deal to you. So care a little and help the retail stores out.
Just for your information, I have checked most of the inventory that came into our store and all so far is Acer or Aopen. I did sold one that was a Lite-on but it came back defective. So quit calling and wasting the associates' time searching for these serial numbers. You are getting a good deal and leave it at that. I get more than ten calls per day from the same guy asking for this Lite-on drive. So quit being stupid and enjoy your good deal regardless of brands.

Bad_Dude, I am making the assumption from your post that you are employed by OM. Yes the deal is hot even without getting a Lite-on, but...

As far as I understand all the information I have read on this subject, the different manufacturers offer different quality, speed, and features. Of course, they are rated at the same speed, but as with all manufactured goods this rating can be over or understated. Examples...Some are claiming the "non-=defrective" drive they got will only burn at 20x, or has 5+ min burn times. Lite-On drives offer extra features for copying that the others don't, and burn in under 4 1/2 mins consistently.

As far as wasting your time...how about the False Advertising that was done with the Polaroid drives last week. I drove 3 hours to get in on that mistake. Bottom line, if companies are going to use different manufacturers and box them the same at the same time, you will run into this problem. Thanks for the deal (I got in on it for two family members), but if OM wants to do away with the calls checking inventory, then do away with the confusion of different manufacturers! This is twice in two weeks this has happened. I didn't run the ad for Smart Burn, and I didn't make the deal to purchase thousands of Cendyne brand drives from a possible 5 different drive makers (verbatim and Lite-on seperated due to both showing up).

Finally, of course we the consumers are looking for the best deal...DUGH, that's why we are here. Don't squalk at your customers who are trying to spend money at your store with no thought of deception or fraud. If you're not happy with that, then look up the chain not down!

bad_dude: you need to relax. first of all... not many ppl are having success getting the OM B&M's to honor the $25 off $100 online code, so the drives for many ppl are really $100 out the door. secondly, the $40 MIR is from cendyne, not OM. u make it seem like OM is getting utterly d!cked in the process. just as much as us consumers love a great deal, retailers love a clueless shopper who is willing to pay premium prices. i'm guessing the number of those who pay premium far outnumber those bargain hunters like us. i do not doubt this is a great deal. but... if i had a choice, i would like to get the best drive from the money. the concensus here seems to feel the lite-on is the best, thus the most desired. as mysticman1 pointed out, $35 for a cdrw drive is prolly cheaper then a lot of regular cd-rom drives in retail, so it's a hell of a deal. next week, when prices go back to normal, ppl will be kicking themselves for missing out. i think a lot of ppl here who are saying they're gonna return this or that are just blowing smoke. they'll come to realize that this is pretty hot, regardless of mfr.

My deal went down as thus tonight:

Went to OM and gave them the SKU number. They had them all in the back ..... no notices or anything on the shelves. If I didn't know the SKU number (from this post .... thanks Anandtechers) I would have been screwed.

Anyway he brought one out for me. I gave the cashier the $25.00 off coupon ... she had to ask an assistant mgr and he okayed it without a moment's hesitation. I didn't even have to add a penny item to make it the $100.00.

So now I paid 82.xx including tax out the door. Less the $40.00 rebate will leave it at $41.xx. I will be selling a 12X for more than this so I effectively upgraded from a 12 speed to a 24 speed free.

Mine ended up being an Acer. I asked the clerk to check in the back and he came out with one with all serial numbers. I asked him to just swap but he said that he had to check the register. It rang up for 129.99. It was only then that I saw that it was a 32X. Oh well I almost got away with a 32X for the price of a 24X.

I have mixed feelings about keeping the Acer. Over the years I have often used Acer products and have had no complaints about them. They always worked for me.

JameyF--
Were you able to do any more testing with the Verbatim drive you flashed into a Lite-On? Just curious...

I, too, am looking for a compelling reason to flash mine over to a Lite-on. Probably the best reason is that I believe Lite-on updates the drive's Smart-Burn information in their firmware releases, so that they are adding new media types and write strategies for the drive, which should improve performance in various ways. The other reason that I've read is that some software programs specifically look for the LTR-24102B before enabling certain features, although I'm not familiar with those programs or features

At this point, I haven't been able to find any Verbatim firmware updates for this drive, so that front doesn't look encouraging...

Got mine. It's an Acer. Although I didn't get a Lite-on, I will stick with this one. For $39.04, I can say anything.
