The manager at my OM was quite nice. I asked him to pull the drive form the back so I could check to see if it was the one I wanted. It turned out to be a Lite-On so I was pumped. THe manager asked what I was looking for and I told him about the multiple brands rebadged by Cendyne and how I wanted a Lite-On and showed him how to identify it. He said "wow, you learn something everyday" and thanked me for sharing the info with him. He was pleasant and I started talking to him about online purchases/instore pickup/online coupons etc. and I asked him if they honored online coupons in the store. He told me they did as long as there was something printable to scan and give to corporate. I told him I didn't have the coupon with me but I would bring it in in the next few days and see if he could honor it and if so do the whole return/rebuy thing and I also told him I could judt buy it online if not and return the one I was about to purchase. He kindly said "You don't need to go to all that trouble I will just do a manual override and give it to you now for $74.99 and don't forget the $40 rebate so you get a really good deal". I guess a little kindness and conversation skills still go a long way!!!!!!!!

pardon me if i'm wrong, but isnt that just the deal everyone reading this thread is after? Perhaps the only thing different is you know you got a liteon and secondly, the manager was cool enough let you use an online coupon you forgot to bring.
So in theory you got a new friend a OM and a Liteon 24x for $34.99 AR.

All and all a very good deal posted by MysticMan (good find man!) and perhaps you can share with us which OM you went to? I'm willing to bet if a couple (notice i said a couple.. not all) ATers went to the same one and was polite enough, they'd get a good deal from this OM also!

I wish I could say the same for the managers in SF. Can't blame them for looking a little frazzled and worn-out form dealing with all the local bargain hunters around here, but they really would save themselves a lot of trouble and time if they just honored the online coupons...But of course, some just really like to be difficult.

Hope everyone gets as lucky as you did, Ronstang

i heard the drive got pulled from the website... does this mean the deal is dead? i guess that depends on if the store managers will let u use the online coupon.

Hi all,

I picked up one of these drives from the Northtown location in Minnesota. Twelve digit serial number Lite On drive inside. Anyway, I opened up the box and found that the quality seal had been broken and someone had placed what looks like a black security tag on the Manual inside. And it appeared that the drive had been removed from its packaging. Does Office Max place Security tags on the inside of their products boxes?

I just got back from my local B&M with this burner. When I got to Office Max they had the drive for $119.99 with a $30 rebate. After some pricechecking, it turned out that they indeed were $99.99 with a $40 rebate. I had the employee search the back for the right serial number and i was in luck when he pulled one with a 12 digit serial number. I talked to the Manager and she let me use my online coupon for a total of $99-$25-$40 = $39 with tax.

Now i have a question for anyone who can answer it. I opened the box up and got 2 cds in pouches along with a buner that read VERBATIM on it. What gives? I have heard people say these are rebadged LITE-ONS but how do you know this? Did i get screwed.
Please clear this dilemma up for me

Why would a company rebadge a drive and them put that rebaged drive in different box.

spankyOO7.....( i heard the drive got pulled from the website... does this mean the deal is dead? i guess that depends on if the store managers will let u use the online coupon. )

That means they ran out of stock on the drive like they do every week when it's on sale, but the last couple of weeks they have restocked the drive near the end of the week and put it back on the web site. So, keep a eye on the site or this thread.

Also some poeple were still able to order the drive by phone (800-283-7674. option 1, use a coupon code), since then one people say they too were OOS, two guys say they were able to still order the drive, so, a phone order may still work. If not it's back to trying the coupon at the stores or waiting for them to restock on-line.

If you peel back the VERBATIM sticker you will find a Lite-on sticker under it, also when you boot up the drive will show up as "24102B". there is a way to flash it to a show up as a liteon on my post at the beginning of this thread.

The Lite-on drive (not the VERBATIM) has the words "Smart-burn" next to the 12 digit serial number, did your VERBATIM drive have that too?

<< so, what kind of drive R Uall getting? any reviews on 'em yet? >>

Well, I just trekked to my local OM B&M with my Polaroid Drive (BTC) from last week. I went and checked and the floor model of the Cendyne was a Lite-On (!!!) I went up there and had no problems exchanging the drive for the Cendyne (including the $25 coupon from the online purchase of the Polaroid) They brought me out something that was not lite-on, but I asked the guy if he could look for one that said Smart Burn next to the Serial number and he brought me one right out. So I got the Lite-On, not Verbatim, and all is well in Crestwood, IL.

Thanks MysticMan1!

No! I don't have the Dos FW or know where you can get it. maybe one of the members that have already downloaded that program can give you a copy.

The only at advanages of doing this is that you can upgrade the firmware using the firmware from Lite-ons web site, since the VERBATIM drive uses VERBATIM firmware it can't be upgraded using Lite-on firmware unless you make the change.

I'm going to try to get the ones I have upgraded. I will then post the link and information on how to do it. It might be a few hours, but I'll try to get it done tonight.

On a side note...There are no lite-on/verbatims in Raleigh/Cary/Garner NC. I traded in the two polaroids I got last week for the last two in this area.

OOOOOOOO YEAAAAA! Had to pickup some things, so i decided to stop back to the same OFFICE MAX and see if they had a Lite-on. After some seaching, the CSR emerged with one that had the smart burn technology label on the back along with the 12 digits. I told them the other drive did not work with my computer and without any hassles they exchanged it. Got to car and opened it up to see the LITE-ON sticker!!!! Its a happy day in PA.
Cant wait to use the drive with my HP Taiyo Yuden cdr's from sears.

I've got the windows version of FW 5s07 but I can't find the dos version. This kinda bites. If anyone has the Dos version, please email it to me so I can try it and post a link to it.

i been to the piscataway & east brunswick stores in NJ and they have these drives in stock. but i asked the worker's there for a drive with a 12 # serial number... i specifically told them no letters... they were not able to find any. they seem to all be acers, becuz i recall seeing the "PW" towards the end of the serial number. so how are the acers? i guess i really want the lite-on... just in case i wanna copy something with SD2 encyrption.

I would guess that the Acer drive would work with the CloneCD program to copy a SD2 disc. You can probably find that infomation on the CloneCD web site.
