Hmmmm.

$55.

And my current CDWriter is going for about $70, used, on Ebay. Might be time for a free upgrade.

Yeah, I'm sure I could get more used for my 12X plex than this drive cost me, even at $69... but I think I'll keep both drives... the Plex might make a nice reader on the same system, since it can read sub-channel data.

Ya, it's a new rebate coming out tomorrow... I think it's one of those deals where they print the rebate for you right in the store. He basically cut me a deal on the drive so I wouldn't have to come back in and buy it tomorrow... I'll take $69 for a 24X lite on burner with no MIR hassles, thank you very much

The $40 rebate and the CenDyne 24x CD-RW drive should be on the web site shortly after midnight, probable east coast time.

if i remember right parago was the rebate fullfillment house that was used when i bought my current philips 8x burner, if your not familiar with what happend the rebates took 6 months to be mailed out and thats for the people who actualy got them, there are may still waiting. this was my only experience with them so i'm a little scketchy about trying it again, though thats a nice price for a drive much faster and probably quiter than my philips. this thing is load as hell.

<< But the Aopen does not back up safedisc 2... that's more important to me than a few music CD's that can't be backed up. >>

The Aopen does back up SD2 using the AWS feature of CloneCD--verified. In fact, the AOpen can most likely back up SD2.5 CDs as well. Do a search on those terms and you'll find some of my and others' posts regarding this. The Aopen may possibly be a better drive than the Liteon for all around compatability. It's got pretty good benchmarks too--and that was with the 0.95 firmware (it's up to 2.02 now). Still not sure that I made the right decision in Ebaying the AOpen and keeping the Liteon. I think the Aopen felt like a higher quality drive.

WantMoreDeals....(Is this drive available online??? I cant seem to find it..)

Since the CenDyne 24x10x40 drive and rebate are not on their web site, when I last checked at 9:33 AM est. Sun, this deal is starting to look like a in-store only deal. If so,What I would do is print-out the page with a $25 off $100 coupon on it, and take that to your local store, and tell your one of those friendly OfficeMax manages that you were going to buy the drive on-line, but you couldn't fine it, and would he (or she) honor the $25 coupon, so you can purchase the drive from him or her. Or just say they are out of stock on-line (and hope he dosen't check), and would he honor the $25 coupon. This has worked before, for a number of poeple, but it up the to manage to decide to honor the $25 coupon or not.

My buddy and I bought 4 of these yesterday at the local OM... Manager had cut me a deal for $69 w/out the MIR.

All 4 drives were Lite-on's.

Gooberedup,

Where is the information indicating that the Aopen can backup Safe2 discs? The review from cdrwcentral.com in November indicated that safedisc 2 could not be backed up.

If you use Clone CD also download ClonyXL. It's a great companion program to Clone CD since it simplfies the process and reads each CD to tell you what type of protection each CD is using, then configures Clone CD for the proper setup, taking the guess work out.

From one of my earlier posts:

<< AOpen DOES SD2 !!

Ahh, found it. I remember awhile back that CloneCD had an "Amplify Weak Sector" feature that enabled CloneCD to do SD2 backups even with drives that weren't technically SD2 compatible. In the US and UK you are not allowed to use the AWS function and it isn't "available" although you can see it (it's greyed out).

But, if you set your Region setting in Windows (yes, it works in XP) for Canada, then pull up CloneCD, you will be able to access the Amplify Weak Sectors box. I've tried this and it does indeed work. Remember, this box only appears when you are writing a CD.

Also, you can do a registry edit to enable the AWS box or you can download CloneAMP to make the changes for you. Not all CD-RWs can use the AWS feature. BUT the Aopen CAN!

Please check out the following links.

For those Aopen people, I wouldn't be disappointed one bit. I just wish I'd thought about looking at this earlier before wasting my time hunting down a frickin' Liteon.

http://www.leech.at/sd2brenner - Tells you which burners are compatible with AWS, in addition to the AOpen.

http://www.cdrsoft.cc/index3.html - Search for "amplify." Find files and Forums discussing SD2, CloneCD and AWS workaround.

http://www.clonecd.net/about.htm - General info on CloneCD.

Modifying your system to do SD2 should take less than five minutes. Now, go forth and SD2.

From one of Aldamon's earlier posts:

<< Sure:

Here's the scoop. The situation is improving and it appears AWS support is back. There are two sticky threads at the top. Read both.

http://forum.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?s=8d8b7e29f9deadc9e9f3ecf29d62e3d1&forumid=18

Also, did anyone read the "Cactus Data Shield" audio CD protection review over at CDRInfo? The AOpen takes the prize!

w00t

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Art...dline=Cactus+Data+Shield+200&Series=0&index=8

"The winner with CDS200 protection is the AOpen CRW2440. The drive has no problem read the disc contents, rip them (up to 91% with CDDAE, up to 100% with EAC) and give you a safe backup. All other 24x recorders (Plextor, LiteOn, Yamaha, TEAC) will fail in re-producing a backup disc. The problem here is the reading not the writing part...Perhaps with newer firmware updates, reading compatibility will be improved."

If you buy this burner be sure to get a copy of Clone CD and download a copy of ClonyXL, a great companion program to Clone CD which simpilfies many of it's functions. Additionally it will tell you what type of protection each CD has.

That is not the correct rebate form for the new promotion. The rebate form you have listed expired on Febuary 2nd and was for $20. The rebate advertised in today's Feb 3rd circular is for $40.

Just got back from B&M. Got the Lite-On and they honored the $25 off $100 printed from the web site.
Out the door for $102. The booklet they gave me for the rebate shows the $20 rebate noted above. The store display and the ad shows a $40 rebate. Anybody got the $40 rebate they can scan??

EDIT: Just called the 800 customer service folks-- The store gave me the January Mail In Rebate Directory rather than the February one, and the $40 rebate is in the February one she said!!!

Edit#2: A note on my packaging: my box had a sticker that said PC World Top 10 CR-Drives, and a Sticker that said Verbatim 24x CD-R media Included, and a sticker on the back that said Smart-Burn Technology by the serial number. Seeing the latter, I took a chance. YMMV
