A little remender to everyone, although popular to go to the end of a thread to see what it's about, in my post I put and update all the information needed to do my deals at the BEGINNING of the thread, so you can save yourself a lot of time and trouble by starting at the BEGINNING of this thread.

To find the drives on-line you need to do a search , key word "CenDyne", and that will take you directly to both drives. In fact here's the link : Link to drives

My local OMax has 3 DVD Drives with 12 digit serial numbers (Lite-On) and 2 CD-RW with serial Numbers that look to be Acer's... Just from what I have seen in other threads being Acers's would make this a not so hot deal correct?

quick somewhat unrelated question...

i'm interested in buying something from officemax. my local target has it for $254. omax is $299. i have the $50 off $250 coupon but its only good online, and of course their online store does not have the item. edit: found it on their store, god their search engine sucks.

is there any way that i can get the PM and coupon to net out around $204+tax? what procedure is suggested for getting this, should i first get the PM and then try to use the coupon too or what? i can't add the item to my cart on their site and print it out as has been suggested in this thread since its not avail online. =(

edit: so i found it online, but still left wondering what the best way to get this PM+coupon to work. any suggestions. have a couple OfficeMax B&M right near me so its easy to try instore if thats the best option.

thx, w

Someone help me....I ordered 2 of these from them on Saturday. What is the difference if I get an Acer or a Liteon? If I receive the Acer should I return it?

Basically the way an Acer CDRW drive reads a CD isn't very good (no subchannel data etc.) If you're interested in making images of CDs and then burning I would not get the acer. I actually had an acer and it takes forever to make an image and then it may or may not work when you burn it. The lite-on 24102B drives are excellent.

Thanks, treemonkey. I'm leaving work in a few minutes and will drop the Acer off at the store. Now I gotta look into this coupon thing.

Guys at work are making fun of me cuz they've never heard of Lite-on. They said I have to spend money for a TDK or plextor. Are Lite-on's as good?

Can anyone PM me the links to "printable" OffDep or Staples coupons? I searched on google and went thru ~30 sites finding only codes and referral IDs that take me directly to the store's site but nothing printable. Appreciate any help.

Here we go with the 'oh it a Acer" thing again, it truth that some people have had problems with the Acer mfg CenDyne drive, but other people have been satisfied with their Acer mfg drive.
When I went to the web site on Monday there was a message next to both CenDyne drives (it's not there now), saying "this item is nonreturnable". So, officeMax might be trying to stop people from returning perfectly good nondefective CenDyne drive because the drive didn't have a 12 digit serial nunber on the box. I'm sure they and CenDyne are losing money everytime someone returns one of these drive. Remember OfficeMax are not selling Lite-on drives, they are selling Cendyne drives some of which happen to be rebadged Lite-on mfg drive.
If you want the Lite-on mfg version and nothing else will do, then you better purchase the drives in the store so you can be sure that the drive you get is a Lite-on.

i have the lite-on 16x dvd and 24x cdrw drive and they're both great. copy any cd i've attempted to and at blazing speeds.

one thing though that i'm sure is not related to the drive is that i can't burn faster than 20x. anyone know why this is?

Have you tried upgrading the firmware for your lite-on CD-RW drive and the Nero software to the newest versions?

I've upgraded to the latest firmware but i'm not sure if i have the latest nero...version 5.5.7.2. For some reason i think the burnproof technology is limiting the speed...the CLV method or whatever that varies speed. I'm getting this 20x max reading in nero drive speed.

anyone have the same experience?

by the way the drive does everything a drive can do these days. neither is louder than any drive i've heard that is this fast.

When you use 24x media does it still burn at 20x and how long is it taking to burn a CDR at the 20x speed?
The latest Nero version is v.5.5.8.0. , you can download it here : LINK

Let me clear up what I said about my Acer drive. It would burn data and files to CD fine. It had serious issues with making images of whole CDs and reproducing them properly. I researched this and found out that the method Acer drives use to read CDs is inferior. I have attempted making images of CDs with the lite-on and burning them and so far every one has been perfect.

Thank you Mysticman1 !!!! The information you posted was most helpful to me.

I picked up the Cendyne 24x10x40 CD-RW at the local Office Max; looks like a Verbatim [12 digits - no letters in serial number; "smart burn" on box but not next to serial number] -- also says it has Verbatim media in the box. $69.99 - $20 rebate. The manager said they were selling fast, but that they still had quite a few "in back" (Vancouver, WA). I held back on the DVD unit (it appeared to be Lite-on too), but did pick up a 50 disk spindle for $2.99 after $5 rebate.

The question now is can I hold out against the urge to start building until the 533 FSB P4s and boards come out?

I would call the 800 number and tell the CSR about the email, they should look up your order and then redo it with the $25 off coupon included from your original order.

Hope I will get a lite-on, but if I get an Acer, the only problem should be the "reading" CD part, right? And since we will get a lite-on DVD (actually I already got two "real" lite-on DVDs from Dell), can we just use our DVD rom to read CDs? Burning CD is much more important to me, (otherwise, why buy a CD-RW rom?), does Acer have any problem to burn CDs?

Thanks!

Some people had trouble getting the Acer mfg drive to perform correctly in their computer and some people didn't have any problems with the Acer drive.
Everyone should keep in mind that officeMax is not selling Lite-on CD-RWs, they are selling CenDyne CD-RWs drive and some of the CenDyne CD-RWs happen to be rebadged Lite-ons.
From what I've been hearing I would say that about 40% of the CenDyne drives are Lite-ons or Verbatims (rebadged Lite-ons) and about 40% are Acer mfg drive, so if you are buy the 24x CenDyne drive because you think you are going to get a lite-on, there's a 60% chance that you will be very disappointed.
