It seen that the Acer's CD-RW doesn't want to work in old computers, if you have a current computer (with-in a year or so), than the Acer shouldn't give you any problem.

It also doesn't work with my External Firewire Case.

Went to the local Office Max today and found lots of Acers and one Teac 24x10x40 which I took home. Since most of the discussion here is about Acers and Lite-ons, could someone advise this novice, please, whether I should keep this drive or keep looking?

Well I couldn't find a lite-on or verbatim so I just kept the Acer. I've burned two things, both at 24x, one with clonecd and the other with dj and they both burned perfect.

Thanks for posting the deal MysticMan.

TEAC makes good CD-RW drives, I'm sure you will be satisfied with you it. There's a review of the 24x TEAC drive it the beginning of this thread.

Thank You MysticMan1.

I read the article, but my head started hurting about the third page and the Teac scored so low on a few tests that I just wasn't sure. Teac has always been a name I've trusted in the past. I especially like the idea that this will be a quiet drive. Don't mind waiting an extra couple of seconds for that.

You should have jumped ahead to the conclusion on the last page.

(Conclusion!

The drive's writing performance is very good. It will write ANY inserted media at 24x writing speed, since no build-in media detection system is attached. The writing quality with 24x certified CDs is very good but you might have some problems with very low quality media. The excellent seek times and the good transfer rate is welcomed. CloneCD users will be happy from the writing part; SD2 is fully supported, and disappointed from the reading performance. TEAC also promises to support Mt. Rainier format by the end of this year with a future firmware update. So far only Yamaha 3200E support such feature

Well I've found a problem with the Acer, it won't work with CDRWin. I had 4.0 installed and it said no supported devices were installed so I uninstalled 4.0 and installed 3.8 and it said the same thing. Anyone know a way to fix this? If I can't then it is going back, I use CDRWin all the time.

If you need the CDRwin app to burn your ISO files you can burn those files with your Nero program, but you might have to update to the latest version of Nero (v.5.5.8.0.) Link to v.5.5.8.0

Yor can also do ISO image files using the "FireBurner" burning program Link to Fireburner.com.

I always send in the packing slip as the receipt and have never had any problems and I also make copys of everything I send in just to be safe.

There a review of the 24x AOpen drive it at the beginning of this thread.

(Conclusion

Although the drive had a firmware version 0.95 it performed very good in most of our tests and in some cases it won the first place. In most cases, the PleXWriter PX-W2410A is faster and holds the lead but AOpen drive is very close. Both 20x/24x writing speeds are slower than the competition and that's a negative point for the drive. However it manages to produce low C1 errors during recording when 24x certified media was used. The JustSpeed technology is present and helps the drive in obtaining these excellent results.

I was able to get it to work, I d/l 3.8g from goldenhawk and it works fine. Strange that 4.0 wouldn't work but 3.8g would.

The Acer burns slower than 24x too, it takes about 5 and a half minutes for a full 700mb cdr. It seems to stop all the time, then spin back up like the buffer underrun is kicking in but according to the software the buffer is fine. I'm gonna keep looking for the other brands, hopefully they'll get some more in soon.

If an Acer can burn CDRWs just fine, I will keep it of course. As long as it's faster than my 8x4x32, I will be happy.

The Verbatim mfg drive is a rebadged Lite-on, but it uses Verbatim firmware and cannot be upgraded with Lite-on firmware. If you want be able to use upgrade using the Lite-on firmware you first have to use the DOS "5s07" program to change it use lite-on firmware then your drive show up as a liteon that you can upgrade with Lite-on firmware. Check the beginning of this thread for more info.

RMA'ed my Acer drive because I never could get it to burn at full speed, I talked to Jake Turner (tech support) at Tech support link he was cool about it and knew about the problems many people are having with Acer drives.
I just got the drive back and they sent me a Liteon drive.

Good customer support and a happy customer.
