<< They actually reveal who the real maker of the drive is. >>

for 24x, the review also talks about Lite-on, but the truth is that it's not the only mfg.

<< Here is a review of the Cendyne 32x!

<< Yes, that is the right picture. The current version of the Lightning II is actually an OEM ...... >>

They actually reveal who the real maker of the drive is. But I will let you read it for yourself. This is a great deal for $54.99.
>>

this is one of the low points of this drive in the articles conclusion: "The drive has a maximum CD-RW read speed of only 32x."

i do not get how this is a low point? anyone care to explain?

Steve0 or anyone else,
Do you have the SKU number on this Cendyne 32x cdrw?
I missed out on the 24x this week,
so I will be jumping on this deal.

Thanks,

The max 32x CD-RW speed means that it will read CD-RW discs at a max of 32x. But who cares since nobody uses CD-RW discs anyways. CD-R's are too cheap to buy expensive CD-RW discs and then waste an hour formatting them.

Since when are CD-RW's expensive? and since when does it take an hour to "format"? as you say. If I didn't have RW media I would go through a great deal of CD-R's, way too many, in fact. On top of that I would be throwing away a lot of "backup" copies of CD-R's that would no longer be needed: not an environmentally friendly thing to be doing.

Does anyone know if the designated "high speed" rewriteable media (supposed to work up to 10x) will also work at 12x?

Edit: It has been stated by a manufacturer or two that they have found current 10x high-speed rw media to also work at 12x.

I would do that if I could find the drive first.

Thanks to MysticMan1. I missed the deal on the Lite ON 24X burner drive. Been looking all over Jersey for the elusive Lite-On OEM 24X drive without success. Just grab the 32X12X40X for $129.99 + TAX this afternoon after reading this thread. The SKU# is 683728001070. I made sure that the box has the 12 digit serial #s. And yes it is a Lite-ON drive manuf Jan 2002 . Nice deal as I was able to finally use my $50 gift card from previous OM deals. By the way the cashier told me I can get the difference in price 14 days from the time I made the purchase.

I went to OfficeMax today and the Manager was willing to sell me the 32x at Sunday's price. I guess business was slow. It was a 12 digit serial number w/o SmartBurn next to it.

BTW, if you're looking for 24x Lite-on Cendyne's, the Costco near Philly had a few. I'm sure the one's in NJ do as well.

I did some advanced scouting in my area at Office Max for the Cendyne 32x burners. They appear to be the rebadged Verbatims, because they have a 12 digit all numeric Serial Number AND they don't say Smart Burn next to the SN, just something like buffer underun technology on the front of the box. The question is.........Do I keep the 24x which is a rebadged ACER or do I return it and spend the $15-$20 more and get the 32x which is probably a Verbatim? Any thoughts?

I just thought of another thing so here's another 2 cents worth... <http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif>

What exactly are the differences, if any, between a rebadged drive and the original drive under the manufacturer's name? I know the face plate is usually void of any name but other than that, are they really the same or is there some technology, or other spec different. Just because Lite-on may make a drive for cendyne, they may make it to cendyne's specifications, ie use cheaper parts or something else. Any thoughts?

The only ones in NJ are in North Jersey, I live in Cherry Hill, where is the one in Phila? Or I can go to DE, the land of tax free shopping...wonder if the Cristiana Costco has any cendynes. Do you need a member ship or do they have those one day passes?

If you were to read the thoughts people shared in the 24x thread, you'd spend the extra money on the Lite-On. I haven't had any personally experience with Acer CD-RW drives so I can't comment on them. I avoided them specifically because of comments in that thread, and others like it. I've always been a Plextor fan, but highly rated sub $40 24x burner for this week and sub $60 32x burner for next week, I couldn't justify buying another plextor. I bought two 24x Lite-On's.

Don't see the CenDyne 32x12x40 on the OfficeMax website....
Guess you won't be able to use the $25 off coupon...

God damn it, classic Murphy's law.

I just bought the 24x Cendyne (resigned to the fact that I'm getting an Acer - I live in NJ) using the $25 of coupon by calling in the order in last night - I assume its in the mail now.

Now, I can get a lite-on for $20 more. Is there anyway to somehow retain the $25 dollar discount and get the 32x Cendyne?

BigEdMuustaffa,

My Cendyne 32x retail box has a 12-digit all-numeric serial number, and no mention of "Smart Burn" anywhere on it. However, the drive enclosed was a LiteOn LTR-32123S and not a Verbatim. The label on the drive indicates this (it says LiteOn LTR-32123S on it). By the description of the drives that you scouted out, they could very well be LiteOn branded.

As far as your Acer is concerned, get rid of it and get the LiteOn. The Acer may be a great drive (or not, for all I know), but the LiteOn can do absolutely everything that the Acer can do plus a lot more. Go to the CloneClinic at http://pub42.ezboard.com/bunofficialclonecdforum (and don't go there with Netscape Navigator 4.x because the site don't like it) and read a little. You will find that the LiteOn drive is the solution to just about every burning need. The Acer is not.

E.

Done. CSR was nice and shifted the coupon. Lite-On, take me away!

Did anyone get that?

Just to throw another curve into the mix. I picked up a 32x CenDyne last Sunday and it is a Mitsumi w/16MB buffer. Has a serial number like CW480ATExxxxxxxxxxxx and says 16MB buffer on the back. This drive also got pretty good reviews although I have no idea if it is better or worse that the Lite-On.

Spanky, I don't think it would work because I would be credited for the the price of the 24x, less the discount. The "difference" would be much more than the $20 difference between both retail prices.
