UPS just delivered the drive to my home. I got a Lite-On this time. The serial number states with "21020200????", made in Jan, 2002, no Lite-on on the front of the drive, has a "Lite-On" label on the top of the drive. The Nero comes in is 5.5.5.6.

Thank you, MysticMan1!

Hey, I'm having a slight problem. I'm certain the drive is a 32x12x40 Liteon, it has the 32x12x40 label on front, the model number on the sticker that's on top of the drive, and it even shows up as a LTR-32123S in the Windows XP device manager. However, Nero only recognizes the drive as being capable of 24x. I've tried three different versions - the old one I had installed 5.5.6.4, the one that comes with the drive, and the newest one 5.5.7.8. All think the drive can only go to 24x, and there is no 32x option. Before anyone yells "firmware!" I have already tried that - my drive was manufactured in February 2002 and when I tried to update to the newest firmware "R32XS0F" (released on 1/25) it said I already had the latest firmware on the drive. The drive is on my secondary IDE channel as the slave to a LTD-163, if that matters. I'm going to contact Liteon to see if they've heard of this problem but some of you may have some ideas as well or even have the same problem.

Ok, I just figured out how to fix it. For anyone else having the same problem (Nero only thinking your CD Writer can go to 24x or any other speed for that matter):

Q30
Why Nero recording software only allow me to chose 8X or 16X speed after I upgraded to your latest F/W?

A30
With the F/W upgrade, your current Nero version may not recognized your drive as high speed recording device. You may solve your problem by doing the following:
1).Start your Nero application
2).Place blank disc in the drive (You must use a media certified to support your drive?s maximum recording speed. i.e.: you need a 40X media for your LTR-40125S drive)
3).In Nero, click on file -> preference, select Cache tab, then select test all drive speeds. Or simply go to disc copy menu, under the copy tap, check the dirve?s maximum speed. This way, Nero will understand your drives? maximum performance, and allow to choose that speed in the future

(Note: * Nero Ver. 5.5.5.6 or later do NOT support writing speed below 8X. If you have chose ?high speed?option during installation, then your choice will only start from 8X. ** If the above step did NOT solve your problem, then you will need to un-install Nero, remove Nero directly manually from Windows Explorer and reinstall Nero.)

In case anyone didn't catch that: Go to File --> Preferences -- > Cache, and hit the "Test all drive speeds" button. For this to work you MUST have a blank CD-R in your drive that is capable of being recorded at your writer's max speed.

Just got mine today. It's a mitsumi but I think I'll keep it. I called the order in on sunday morning and the CSR didn't even ask for a code number for the 25 off coupon! He just said "how much is the coupon for". Sweet huh?

The only problem I had with the install was getting the inner box out of the outer sleeve without destroying the box!
That thing must have been welded together.:|
I have one question about the nero version that came with this drive. Will it work with other drives? It says CD burning software by Mitsumi on the disc.

Thanks for the deal mysticman.

No problem getting Nero 5.5.7.8 and the Feb. drive with newer firmware than Liteonit.com.tw's ("K" vs older"F") site to write a bin/cue image at 32x on Kodak Gold/Silver 8x media. I have Nero installed and didn't use Cendyne's version, nor HD cache test.

I was having the same problem, Nero was saying that the maximum burn speed was 8X, i uninstalled nero, reinstalled it, and now it works.....I think it may have had something to do with having a CD-R in the drive when it was detecting my devices. I wanna try this "INCD", looks pretty cool, using a CD-RW as a floppy, i just had to DL the update from nero..

can someone with the liteon drive test it's SD2 backup capability (with CloneCD)?
see if it can make a perfect backup of SD2 protected CD (usually EA produce games).
If it does then I'm gonna get one.

when you are copying a SD2 cd, can the source drive be an ordinary CD or DVD ROM?

perlmonger, I had that same problem trying to get the box out of the sleeve. I wanted to check the drive and confirm that it was a Lite-On as soon as I got to the parking lot, I must have sat in my car for 10 minutes trying to get that thing apart without destroying the packaging.

Yes the 32x rebadged Lite-on can copy SD2 CDs. Read the Lite-on 32x review at the beginning of this thread.

My drive came UPS as well yesterday via UPS. Obviously the UPS guy didn't ask for a coupon. It is a rebadged Liteon; even says liteon on the drive and in Windows. Great deal IMO.

To anyone that has the Verbatim drive, is it any good? How long does it take you to burn a 700mb disk? I ordered online and this is the drive that I got. Just wondering if I should keep it or return it. Lastly, if I can't get lukcy and get a liteon, is the mitsumi better than the verbatim?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Mitsumi...update burns wellused the Imation 24x as well as Fuji 32x..best time for a 593MB disc = 3:20 ..glad I had no difficulties with it(unlike that TopG/HiVal 24x10x40 needstobedroppedintheporcelainbowlandflushed "unit" ..it hung my system on boot screen twice..lol and the third time after checking all the IDE connections..it shafted the BIOS' recognition of my HardDrive..return to OM for it) finally tested the Cendyne 24x10x40 Teac excellent no fuss no muss burns a data CD very well 3;33 same disc listed above. The girl who the Mitsumi is going to will be happy.

Lizardman, return it if it won't burn a CD if you have it configured correctly.

swapped the HiVal(TopG) 24x10x40 for a I/OMagic 24x10x40(man testing too much hardware here) burning the same 593MB data disc...lol...still burning..(serial number on drive has 8digits and 'JE' on the end) myGAWD>>>JUSTLINK..Nero reports bufferunderrun avoided274 times..oo..nasty..burn time..10:37 seconds was a big resource hog also pegged 100% almost constantly and near kept me offline(only one IE window open)...another one to haul back to OM. :disgust: guess I give up on the 24x10x40 line.

This is an amazing CDRW drive!

First tested with 32x TDK CDR with 641MB file, finished in 4:05.

Then tested with ?x STi CDR with 642MB file, finished in 4:18.

?x STi CDR is from CircuitCity's deal, comes with 2x100 spindle. It is really a crappy CDR. My Sony 12x8x32 CDRW can only run 10x on this CDR. I was really surprised when I saw Lite-On can run 32x on this crappy!!!

I just tried placing the order over the phone using the online coupon, and
the Officemax salesperson told me that the coupon was for online orders only.

Anyone know another way to make this deal work?

Did you use a coupon "code" when you called in your order? If not then call back and this time tell them you want to use a $25 off $100 coupon code with your order.

Also turn on your PM

A very highly intelligent person (no not me ), decided to send a email to Verbatim tech support and ask them "who" is the mfg of the Verbatim (VBT321240A) 32x12x40 drive. Mmmmmm!
Here's the reply he got.

Hello,

Yes, the 32x drive is manufactured by Lite-ON.

Regards,
Edward

There's still the question of will the DOS flash program that was used on the verbatim 24x drive to get it to recognize the verbatim as a Lite-on, work on the 32x drive or do you need a different DOS program for the 32x drive, (I'm not talking about firmware to upgrade the drive).
Also does doing this have any affect on the CenDyne warranty?
