I got a Mitsumi, too slow for 32x. It takes 8 mins for 700MB while my Yamaha 24x takes only 5 mins. :disgust:
I went to OM and exchanged Liteon, a little bit faster but still slower than Yamaha.
I'm happy that I have Yamaha 24x

This coupon is not going to be linked here, as it is one of the most egregious of errors here to do so.
It is however, easily discoverable - do a search for "officemax coupon" at google.

For those of you who can't get the CSR to accept the $25 of 100, simply politely hang-up and try again. You'll get a nice one at some point. However, I think there must have been a company-wide alert regarding this deal - hence the refusal to put this drive on the website for order.

BlipBlop....(I think there must have been a company-wide alert regarding this deal - hence the refusal to put this drive on the website for order. )

It's not unusual for officeMax not to have a item on their web site that's on sale in the stores. It has to do with the number drive they have for sale. Even when they put the drive on the web site they will be out of stock by the end of the first day.

Sirius....(Hey what up...i went to the officemax site and could not find the $25.00 coupon there....anyone one know whats going on or where it is?...Sirius )

You need to turn on your PM (private messenger) to receive information in this fourm.

MysticMan, you are right. However, what i meant to say was that CSR's had begun requesting proof of the coupon, and that was why I had thought an alert might have occurred. That's what I get for writing part of a reply, going to the bathroom, getting something to eat, and then finishing it without properly reading what was written.

I got a Verbatim one yesterday and to test if it is a Lite On, I try to backup a SD2 protected disc.
I try Sim Golf (use SD2 copy protection) and make a perfect workable no need patching backup.
I can use the backup in normal cdrom and the CloneCD reading speed is awesome.
I use CloneCD 3.0.9.1 if it matters and just the Verbatim drive (image to HD then Copy).
I don't know if this prove that Verbatim's drive are Lite On but there is only a handful of drive that can do perfect SD2 backup.

Now, should I keep this or TDK 24X that I got a couple weeks ago ?
Does anyone know if TDK 24X is Lite On drive ? I'd rather keep TDK since it is better looking

It's been 100% confirmed that the Verbatim 32x12x40 (VBT321240A) drive is mfg by Lite-on.

Here's a reply to a email send to Verbatim tech support. :

Hello,

Yes, the 32x drive is manufactured by Lite-ON.

Regards,
Edward

So, go ahead and enjoy new your 32x lite-on drive.

OK What's the bottom line guys?
As I stated in an earlier post, I got the mitsumi. I was going to keep it but everyone else that got this drive has already exchanged it.
Is it that bad? I read the roundup mysticman posted but frankly the test scores didn't mean sh!t to me. Will this drive do everything the lite-on
does? If it is only slower I won't go through the hassle of exchanging it, but if it doesn't do some things that the lite-on does I will take it back.
I ordered it over the phone, will I be able to take it back to B&M if it is opened? I've never had a cd burner before so I don't know the first thing about
them yet. Please help me out.

i think the mitsumi 32x is great...threw it into a dedicated machine for downloading/burning and burned a 550mb disc in 3:12 total...that's pretty damn good.

Perl monger,

Perl programmers, of all people, should read documentations before asking questions! If you read it, you will know that there's one thing that Mitsumi drive can do that the lite-on cannot: reading a full 99 min CD. So go READ the test results like a Perl geek should.

and another thing.
I think Mitsumi drive support Mt. Rainier and has 16MB buffer.
Basicly for me Lite On is better because it does SD2, simple as that.
If you don't know what SD2 is then just keep the Mitsumi drive (or any drive for that matter).

On the box of the drive there is a barcode for UPC, one for the part # and one for serial #. Which one should I mail for the rebate, I suppose it is the one with the UCP code.

Help!

I got a Mitsumi drive and I installed the latest Nero 5.5.7.8 but it refuses to recognize the CompUSA 99 minutes CDR! Any ideas how to overburn? (I tried "file"->"pref"->"expert.." and checked the overburn option, but still it didn't work. Edited the registry, didn't work. I flashed it with the 480ATE firmware, still didn't work. )

Have anyone successfully burned over 80 min with this drive?

update: Fuerio! cd writing software is able to display the correct media length, I'm still trying to figure out how to actually write something with it.

I just got this deal a the local OM B&M, I asked the person if they would take the $25. off $100. printed coupon since they didn't have the 16X I came in to buy. Just took a min for her to call over someone and ask if that was OK. And they agreed to take the coupon I had printed out.
The drive box they had on the shelf was a LiteOn box 12 digit all numeric ser #. The drive they brought me from the lockup room was a Mitsumi ser # on the outside of the box CR-480ATExxxxxxxxxxxxx. I pointed this out and asked if they would please look to see if they had any in the back with out the 16mb buffer, and they said sure, however they did not have any.

the asst. manager or whoever went to check brought back a 24X that was a LiteOn, they do have these in stock.

I think I'll take the 32X back tommorow, and downgrade to the 24X. It's $99.99 I'll add a stick of gum and since tthey have already accepted my coupon I should get the drive for $74.99 out the door, and the 24X has a $40. rebate, $34.99 final cost.
Think this is the better deal. If the Mitsumi would do SD2 backup I would just keep it..

Anyone who got the Mitsumi 32x drive and want to copy SD2 CDs try this:

This was posted by someone for the AOpen 24x drive, but I think it will work for almost any 24x or faster CD-RW drive.
(Ahh, found it. I remember awhile back that CloneCD had an "Amplify Weak Sector" feature that enabled CloneCD to do SD2 backups even with drives that weren't technically SD2 compatible. In the US and UK you are not allowed to use the AWS function and it isn't "available" although you can see it (it's greyed out).

But, if you set your Region setting in Windows (yes, it works in XP) for Canada, then pull up CloneCD, you will be able to access the Amplify Weak Sectors box. I've tried this and it does indeed work. Remember, this box only appears when you are writing a CD.

Also, you can do a registry edit to enable the AWS box or you can download CloneAMP to make the changes for you. Not all CD-RWs can use the AWS feature. BUT the Aopen CAN!

Please check out the following links.

For those Aopen people, I wouldn't be disappointed one bit. I just wish I'd thought about looking at this earlier before wasting my time hunting down a frickin' Liteon.

http://www.leech.at/sd2brenner - Tells you which burners are compatible with AWS, in addition to the AOpen.

http://www.cdrsoft.cc/index3.html - Search for "amplify." Find files and Forums discussing SD2, CloneCD and AWS workaround.

http://www.clonecd.net/about.htm - General info on CloneCD.

Modifying your system to do SD2 should take less than five minutes. Now, go forth and SD2.

Can Lite-On do over-burns. I have heard of VCDs with more than 80 min of data (video), but wasn't sure if I could burn it on a regular 700 mb/ 80 min CD. Does anyone have tried it? Can I burn it using Lite-on on a 700 mb CD?

Time time for the files from the HD looks about right. As for the game copy, I'll bet you were copying a protected CD. It takes longer to make copies of those CD's.

MysticMan,

Look, I'm not trying to burn SD2's, but after trying regedit, checking overburn option, used two types of big CDs in 90 minutes and 99 minutes, flashed the latest firmware, updated to the latest nero, but I still cannot get nero to recognize the correct size. But an audio program called Feurio! can(but it doesn't burn DATA!) . The review clearly shows that nero recognized the big CD in a screenshot.

Good news is, I finally got one overburn success with disc juggler. Now I will keep it. I like the huge cache.

if anyone got nero to work big CDRs, let me know. thanks.
