The newer mfg Model LTR-32123W, does support the Mt. Rainier format and P-cav writing, plus it's overclockable to 48x, but the older Model LTR-32123S does not and is not overclockable.

RebateHQ is the fullfillment company. People have been buying these CenDyne CD-RW drives with rebate for 6 or 7 months now and have been posting that they have been receiving their rebate checks in 4 to 8 weeks without any problems

Mt. Rainier format is a new format created to allow for invisible formating of CD-RW discs so that you can use a new/unformatted disc in around 1 minute after insertion just like a floppy. The new format is trying to make CD-RW drives take the place of floppy discs. I would certainly call it a plus, but I would think it is no where near a neccessity in the near future.

P-CAV writing is "Partial Constant Angular Velocity"...here is the explanation...

"P-CAV method keeps disc rotation constant in the inner portion of the disc as writing speed smoothly accelerates outwards until it reaches top speed. After that, writing speed is kept constant (CLV) until the end of the writing.

Based on the yellow lines in the pictures above that represent the Drive Spindle Motor Revolutions, the rotation speed is kept moderated in the inner portion of the disc with the P-CAV method (compared to the Z-CLV method). This is essential to help keep the quality of writing in the inner portion of the disc, because by moderating the disc rotation it reduces the vibration that can corrupt quality. Also, since the rotation speeds are low it is generally accepted that the life of the laser diode and the drive's pickup will be extended as well."

I checked out my local OM tonight. They brought out one box for me, and it had a 12 digit serial number, starting with 26. I assume this means they definitely have the Lite-On version, and that is a "good thing", right? The manager said he'd take the $15 Staples coupon, even.

Probably. It's either a Lite-On or a Verbatim (which is itself a rebadged Lite-On).

Either can be made in to full fledged Lite-Ons.

I converted my Verbatim to a Lite-On with 2 easy steps and 2 reboots.

Scored two at OfficeMax today for $24.99 each + tax. The serial number didn't match exactly those of the four manufacturers listed by MysticMan1. However, it resembled closest to AOpen's format. The difference is that it got 22 digits serial number, instead of 23, but the last four matched the sample SN of AOpen exactly: ***JED1 . Also, it said 2MB of RAM so I thought it's not a Mitsumi (16 MB). It seemed like Lite-On OEM'd drive was very sought after. Any one can tell me the reliability and performance of AOpen? Will I lose anything if I go with them? I asked the sales to check if they got any drive with "12-digit serial number" but he checked and told me that they didn't have it ...

OfficeMax in Atlanta (Northlake, Doraville, and Buckhead) all had Lite-On's as of this evening. Sorry to say that the one I got turned out to be the older 32123 S, which can/t be overclocked. No problem using Staples coupon. No problem getting the 79.99 price, even though drives were still marked at 129.99, after I showed manager the Weekly Store Specials print out from their website. So you don't have to wait until Sunday to buy.

If anyone should happen to find the newer 32125W in the Atlanta area, please, please, please let me know so I can try and exchange.

I wasn't too worried about the free after rebate stuff. I couldn't even find the extension cord on the site period. I just picked up some stuff that my girlfriend and I needed to bump the total over $100.

So has anyone been able to do 25 off 100 at the B&M stores -- will they just take the code?
