Received package containing 52x/24x/52x Cendyne from Officemax (online) yesterday.
Physical packaging of said drive was not encased in shrink wrap. Instead it consisted of the retail Cendyne box, and two small, one inch in diameter circles of tamper-proof (ie, when peeled the adhesive stays bonded to the material it is in contact with, and a small piece of clear plastic (without adhesive) comes off instead) tape over both the bottom and top flaps. If one were so inclined, he or she could very carefully peel back the circle of plastic, leaving the matching adhesive still bonded with the box. Then (again, if so inclined) he or she could carefully cut the adhesive left bonded along the line of the flap, and open the box.
Let us suppose I have a "friend" who did exactly as the described above. He was then able to open the box, and find that the drive he received was model number CRW 5224A. He was not terribly disappointed, mind you - the Asus is a quality drive; however, my friend purchased this drive in hopes of receiving a Lite-On, and it appeared he did not. Now said friend is very persistent and industrious, and thus he called all his local OM B&M stores in hopes of locating one that had these CenDyne/Asus/BenQ/Lite-On/etc drives still in stock.
He found one such store. Store number 261, Woodside (Queens), Nyc. He thoughtfully boxed the drive unit back into its packaging, was very careful when applying scotch tape to the underside of the plastic circle (thus recreating the adhesive surface), and then removed the tape and stuck the circle down again. This gave the appearance that the box was still "sealed" as though sent directly from the manufacturer. Several hours ago, my friend trekked down to the Woodside store and to his astonishment he found that the "CenDyne et al" drive display box (which was empty) there on the shelf had a curious sticker placed on the back that his own "drive formerly known as CenDyne" did not. Among the "Performance Specifications" and such, at the very bottom read the words "Drive Model : LTR-52246S". He compared the two CenDyne part numbers on both packages, and found them to be identical - CDICD00173. Now, I cannot speak for my friend of course, but this was certainly an interesting bit of information. He took said box from the shelf to customer service and, after a good bit of time spent waiting, found a OM staff person to help him.
"I am looking for this drive... and I am specifically looking for THIS drive model number." (pointing and showing the staff person from the empty box).
"Could you look to see if you have one, please?" he asked.
The staff person disappeared and appeared again, holding several CenDyne drive boxes.
"Sir? They all seem to have the LTR52246S model number on them", he claimed.
And they did. My friend happily took one to the service desk, along with the reboxed Asus drive, and did an exchange. Since it is Saturday (the 5th), the sale, instant rebate, and mail in rebate are all still applicable, it was a direct even exchange, and the service manager even printed out new receipts as though as I had JUST purchased the drive, including a rebate receipt.
"You'll need this to mail in", he said. "Sometimes, the online receipts don't work well for rebates."
How helpful of him. I mean for my friend's sake, of course.

So, if you happen to be in the greater Nyc area and can make the journey to the Woodside store, you'll find 8 rebadged Lite-On drives in CenDyne packaging. Correction - you'll find 7 Lite-On, and one very well packaged Asus courtesy of my ...friend.
Enjoy.
