I just got my Cendyne I ordered off OfficeMax.com and it was the new 4X one, even though the web site said it was the 2X DVD writer. They must have ran out of the 2X or something considering most people are getting the 4X as replacements.

cant write on cheaper media, less compatability

Don't worry, as soon as a new firmware is released...the firmware hackers will fix those problems.

I beg to differ. New firmware has been released, two in the last 6 weeks me thinks and still no hacks. In fact, I think that the firmware have made more problems than solved.

You need to keep reading. I've burnt a couple of DVD's on Ritek G03's with both Pinnacle Express and Sonic MyDVD. Yes it has it's problems, no it's not crappy.

Just to "play" around. I have Soldier on DVD. Used a shareware program to rip it to the hard drive. Burned it on an Imation ($1.20) 2x DVD-R with Nero (of all things). The DVD copy even worked on my TV DVD player.

I havent bought any 4x media yet...but this drive certainly doesnt suck.

You mention Nero as if it is the Devil's tool? I have done over 400 dvd-r's in my 103 and the only program I have ever used is Nero. They play fine in all my dvd players, even a first generation APEX. I won't use any other software.

My OfficeMax only has the A04/104 model. So I went to Staples and they took my $30 OfficeMax coupon, making the 105 $269. I'll go back Sunday and get the $50+$50 adjustment. I wanted to go ahead and get my hands on the drive since they only had 2 in stock.

At first I thought the 105 sucked. My old Pioneer A03 would burn any media, no matter how cheap. At first I could not get the A05/105 to burn my Princo DVD-Rs. It turns out it was my old RecordNow Max and Nero versions....they won't work with the 105. Once I installed Nero 5.5.9.9 (bundled with the Cendyne) and downloaded RNM 4.5 (great program) the drive seems to work fine.

Question for those buying at Staples B&M before the sale on Sunday.. You mention about going back on Sunday and getting the 50IR and 50MIR adjustment on Sunday. Won't the staples rebate that starts on Sunday require a sale receipt dated sunday? How would this be accomplished? I've got a 30 off 150 email printed coupon I'd like to use on it today (Saturday)..

You can always explain the situation and they can return the drive for you then you repurchase it at the discounted price.

Any adjustments should use your original purchase price as the starting point. So if you pay $269 Saturday, they will re-enter the sale Sunday at $269 - $50 IR - $50 MIR = $169 NET for a Pioneer 4x DVD-R burner...plus a blank RW disc... Nero plus PowerDVD etc. Very good deal IMO.

I don't know if this will work but you could buy it today (Sat) using the in-store "kiosks" (a computer linked to the Staples web site) to order the drive using a $50 off $250 on-line coupon for home delivery and then pay for it in the store, after the drive is delivered you could take it back to the store and do a return/repurchase. The tricky part is will they consider it a on-line or a in-store purchase? Of course you can ask them that before you buy it.

Have to forgive me. I like Nero (for years) for CD-R/RW. But read alot of bad reviews about using it with DVD-R/RW. Im still going to use it. I luv the free updates all the time.

What do you guys think about the following deal I came up with?

(You need a Fry's in your area for this to work.)

Go to Staples and purchase this drive today (Sat. 1/18/02) using the following:

Fry's current price for the Cendyne 4X DVD-RW: $249.99
PM to Staples: $220 ($299.99 - $79.99, or 110% difference.)
Use $30 Printable Staples Coupon: $190

Go back to Staples tomorrow and get them to re-sell it to you for your discounted price so that you will be eligible for the rebate:
$190 - $50 = $140.

$10 cheaper and no shipping and handling...

$10.00 GE 2-9255 Slimline Telephone (#02231016)

When you go to the store and use the "kiosks" to order from their web site you printout the order and take it to the register and pay for it in the store, but your order is delivered to your home.

Didn't you just order the 2X drive (Pioneer AO4) and not the 4X drive (Pioneer AO5)?

OfficeMax lists the 2X drive on their website but when I do the drive it was a 4X one (A05). They may have ran out of the 2X and are substituting it with the 4 model. Also from what I hear both the 2X and 4X have the same OfficeMax SKU number.

The 4X model has a different box, and it says 4X on the box.
