The Cendyne DVD-R/RW Drive that I ordered Saturday from OfficeMax.com arrived today and it is the 4x version, as I had thought it would be. Final cost after rebate $129.99 + taxes

The bad news is I also got the OOS order cancelled email on the Cendyne DVD-R/RW Drive I ordered from Staples.com. I did pick up one in the store for $169.94 using the $30 off $150 email coupon, but I may hold on to that one until I see if Staples get more drives in stock on Monday like they say they are and reorder using the $50 off $200 coupon.

There is no differences, that's just how Pioneer idenifies the OEM version from the retail version.

MysticMan1, this is like the 4th CD or DVD drive hot deal I've scored thanks to you! This one is awesome since I've been wanting a DVD-R for awhile.

I'm sure I speak from all the members here when I say "Thanks for The Hot Deal!"

This ain't all bad having the A04. It has hacked firmware which allows 2x burning on cheapo media.

[L=]http://supermediastore.com/[/L] - cheap generics
[L=]http://www.allmediaoutlet.com/[/L] - cheap generics
[L=]http://www.hypermicro.com/store/cd-r_rw_media.htm[/L] - they have probably the best price for 4x ritek around
[L=]http://rima.com/[/L] - cheap generics

Only thing bout buying generics is they only burn at 1x on the pioneers a05/105 drives.
But from what I've read, it seems the riteks have the best compatabilities for ps2, xbox, and dvd players. Can't wait for 4x media to get cheaper.

I got picked up some generic DVD-R's from PC Club and they burned at 2X using the A05 burner. According to Nero CD Speed the ones I picked up were made by Sony. It was on sale 25 DVD-R for 19.99. I have burned these disc at 2X and they work fine.

I got the Officemax $129 + tax one delivered today via UPS. It has Pioneer DVR-105 printed on the drive label and "4X DVD Burning" printed right on the front of the box.

Have a media question! Having these media brands and prices, which one would you buy and why? Taking in to consideration the 105/A05 drive!

This is going to totally be YMMV BIG time, but I thought I'd share.

Went into OM B&M to get the DVD burner (Cendyne) along with a couple of the Polaroid CD-RW's that were on sale for $20 AR's. Well, they were out of the Cendynes so the manager substitued with a Verbatim DVD+R/RW ... and he just knocked the entire total down to $179.99 for the DVD burner because I would not have been able to get the rebates. Unfortunetly it's only a 2.4x ... and it's a +R/RW. The Verbatim was shelf priced $299.99 AND had a $40 MIR with it. So, basically I'm going to get the Verbatim drive for $140 after MIR. I plan to go back tomorrow and see if they'll do the same thing again.

Again, huge YMMV but I just thought I'd toss that out there for you all to know.

Now I just gotta go find out if the Verbatim drive is worth keeping, and too bad I can't use the online coupon and get the drive for $90 after MIR. Oh well, still a great deal IMO.

<edit: Searched using google and the "PART#" on the box and it kept coming up Cendyne drives ... I guess I might as well keep it, though I can't find any reviews on this drive specifically ... :\>

Thanks for the suggestion! I too got the dreaded cancellation email from staples. I printed my online order yesterday and took it to my staples in Carson, CA (they had 2 left on the shelf). Showed them my canceled order and asked the clerk if I they could match the price. She called the manager over who looked at the printout, told the clerk to input the coupon code and *poof*--$50 off.

Grand total after taxes was $216.49.
Now it's rebate time.

READ if you had your order cancelled or is showing Out of Stock online.

I was desperately trying to order this online and tried multiple zip codes but kept seeing that it was out of stock. So I called Staples and asked if I could order it from another store even though it showed out of stock in my area. What the CSR did for me is check the stock of each store in my area. She could not guarantee the accuracy of the numbers but she proceeded to tell me how many drives each store had in my area based on her systems. To my surpise the closest Staples to me in NY had 5 drives. I went first thing this morning and they only had 3 on the shelf. Those of you trying to get your hands on one should call Staples online and ask the CSR to check store inventory for you to help narrow your searches cause your local Staples may actually have these drives in stock.

DuBobD,
Did you update the firmware to 1.21?
Also, will the drive burn the DVD-RW disc that was included with the unit? Mine wouldn't burn it with Nero, so I updated to 1.21 firmware and now the drive won't even recognize the RW disc is inserted. Noticed the disc says "OPTODISC" on it and I heard that's a crappy generic brand.
My drive works fine though with the Memorex brand DVD-Rs I bought at Staples. 1X speed is slowww...:disgust:

There is a seperate thread with working printable codes that you can use in store. The most is $30 off $150 which is what I used.

Here is a quote from German site:

"Pioneer just stopped the delivery of all 105 drives a week ago due to terrible drive and media problems..."
