I imagine all 10,000 AT users currently on line just hit Staples with everything. I can't get in to take a look at this.
However, Mystic, - one he-double toothpicks of a post!

Damn this looks like a sweet deal, but I'm still trying to figure out the whole different formats of DVD-R. I dunno if I should wait till they're settled on a format or is this the one that's likely to win, etc.

Thanks MM1, got in on this in its previous incarnation. I'm passing along the info to some friends who were interested but late before. Can't find a Staples $50/200 coupon that works online, though. Trying to input the ones that haven't expired gives a msg "We are sorry. This coupon cannot be applied to an online order. Please remove it from the field below and redeem it on a phone order by calling 800-333-3330 or use it on a store purchase." So I assume you gotta either phone your order in, or use an in-store kiosk?

good..most common ..best compatability with separate DVD players(DVD-R)
and DVD-RAM
dead or dying format
formats, and who will win, or will it mattter?

think you want compare to DVD+R/DVD+RW...DVD+R ..separate DVD players' playback..ymmv..DVD+RW..almost never in separate DVD players...DVD-R looks the most promising..but then again..so was BetaVCR format...
as always you choose...I'd go DVD-R

It will all go down the tube once Blu-ray is released. 27 gigs on a single layer, sopposed to have one standard format but I have read varying things on that subject.

From my research I believe +R/RW is better....for a few reasons

+R/RW is suppose to work with most DVD players and DVD-ROM drives
you don't have to format the disks
media cost a little bit more

-R/RW is basically a Sony standard
you have to format the disk before using it
chances are if you have a pre dvd writer dvd-rom/player it won't read -R/RW
media is cheaper though

Also the DVD Video Recorders all use the +R format from what I've seen

Which one will win? Who knows its anyones guess but Sony now has the +R/RW&-R/RW combo drive.

The best thing to do is go the the Hardware forum and search this topic has been widely discussed.

Blu-Ray will be sweet since its data transfer rate is 36mb/s, which will be useful to archive high def. video. In the meantime, I'm grabbing one of these Cendyne drives. It doesn't get much cheaper than this!!

Thanks...

If you do get this drive, be sure to get good blank media for it.

I bought a 25 pack of 2x riteks blank dvd-rs and my drive won't even recognize the disks.

Maybe I just got a bad batch of disks.

I thought that DVDs were dual layer, about 9 GB and the standard blank DVD we can burn is about 1/2 that size, making it a lot harder than just pressing a Copy button. (sorry, I forget the exact sizes).

If it's the case that you have to go thru a whole process to rip, compress, encode, burn to multiple disks, etc, what's the advantage of this vs, say, (S)VCD? I know there's probably a slight quality loss with (S)VCD, but is there any other advantage? Just wondering if it's worth upgrading at this point on the technology curve?

Thanks!

stingygrrl: programs like DVDxCopy and DVD2One take care of it for you. do a search on those, and you will find much of the info you are asking about....

In short, there are many times that you need 2 discs, sometimes only one. But, it is pretty much as easy as "hitting the copy button" and making DVD's now....

DVD-R is backed up by Pioneer / etc
while DVD+-R is developed by Sony and other major dvd player brand

i have a sony aru500, so i can burn both , which is nice, but
so far DVD-R has cheaper disk, when compared to DVD+R... they are still expesnive..
but as far as i know, they are sayin DVD+R offered much more compability on DVD player ...
=D

i guess a second DVD-R pioneer drive on my other computer is okay ^_^

totally word , dvdxcopy , it ripped off all the menu and extras off from you leaving you with perfect under 4.7GB space for pictures and
everything ... im looking for ward to dvdxcopy 2.. which might let u keep the menu and extra, after all, that's one of the thing we rent DVD rite..
to see those extra stuff on it ..
