Of course I did. Did you notice the $50 MIR and $60 IR? That don't start until 2/16? You may be able to go back and "return buy" for the instant rebate but you'd be sh!toutta for the MIR. Sorry, I thought that would be obvious.

you cant use a coupon with a staples instant rebate, staples gives you the instant rebate which they consider a coupon already and wont let you use another to make the price lower.

Where were you last week when I posted a deal for a Verbatim 2.5x DVD+R/RW drive from OfficeMax for $149.99 AR.

If it's $60 IR, it's already in the computer...there's no code to enter at the reg. My experience is that you buy now, return during sale week with just receipt. Tell them you want a price adjustment. They return it first, and then re-ring at sale price plus you can use your coupon (YMMV). And then...rebate prints out.

Is there a $50 off printable coupon? I haven't seen one...

i dont understand why people care about who wins the standard because the DVD's you burn will still play in your DVD burner?

do you think they are going to stop making blanks

its $139.99

i know i will probably use this for 1 year 2 years max and then i will get a new burner for 20.00 after rebate that is two to four times as fast as this one when i replace it when they finally do set the standard

I bought this drive last time around. I've made some DVD home movies and have tried them in 4 different set top DVD playes so far. They play just fine in all of them. Very nice drive. I flashed it with the 1.21 firmware from Pioneer.

the reason is this....if you archived 100 discs and want those discs to be around in 5 years and the standard has phazed out, what are you going to do? play it on your dvd drive that you bought 5 years ago? i don't think so......sure, this might not be applicable to you, but some of us do professional work and worry about this stuff.

I think you are misinformed. With the last deal people were using 50 off 200 all over the place. I personally used a printable 30 off 150 at a B&M.

That was what I was asking.

I have yet to see a $50 off printable coupon either.

Who ever told you, that you have to format the disks with DVD-R lied to you. No such thing.

And your "research" is wrong.

Most sites show -R is alittle more compatible then +R.

DVDHelp

DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R/W was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 88% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 69% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD-R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by DVDForum.

DVD+R and DVD+RW
DVD+R/W has some better features than DVD-R/W such as lossless linking and both CAV and CLV writing.
DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 84% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 70% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD+R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by the DVD+RW Alliance.

+R/RW is suppose to work with most DVD players and DVD-ROM drives
you don't have to format the disks
media cost a little bit more

-R/RW is basically a Sony standard
you have to format the disk before using it
chances are if you have a pre dvd writer dvd-rom/player it won't read -R/RW
media is cheaper though

Also the DVD Video Recorders all use the +R format from what I've seen

Which one will win? Who knows its anyones guess but Sony now has the +R/RW&-R/RW combo drive.

The best thing to do is go the the Hardware forum and search this topic has been widely discussed.

wouldn't that make DVD's themselves useless?

i guess if you are using it for data than i guess there is a point there

and i dont have any DVD drives that are five years old but i have tried several that are 3 years old and they play the DVD's ive burned fine and read data as well also

Actually, you don't have to format the dvd-r's and dvd-rw's they work just like cdr's and cdrw's.
I use PrimoDVD2, and there's never any formating of any kind. They initialise the disc at the beginning like everything else, so that the computer knows what track is where and what's on the disc, but that's it.

both formats will still be around.

dvd-rs work better with 90% of players (all new players support it)
dvd+'s work with about 80% of players (quoting from Tomshardware i think)
not all dvd video recorders use dvd+'s... The pioneer one doesn't

I'm using a Pioneer a04, and love it. 2x burning is reliable... only if you use good discs (I use verbatim and fuji)
do not use Memorex. Those have lower reflectivity and will wear down the laser. (ruined my first one)

I beleive the A05 is compatible with DVD+R/RW.

That is they can read +medias as well as -medias.

dood, you are missing the point....heh.....the bottom line is that you want 1 standard so that in x amount of years you can walk up to any dvd player and play/use it. if you have a company that makes commercial DVD's and you spend tons of money producing dvd's, you want them to work in any system. customers don't want another betamax...there are many other implications, but come on dood, you should get the point....

and yes, i'm mainly speaking about data.....

Is it really that simple? For example, can I do this:

Take my legally purchased copy of "The Wiggles Christmas Party" (technically my daughters who likes to beat up on DVD's), pop it in, copy it, and it will be undistinguishable from the original.... including Dolby Digital/DTS encoding? Because the sound is just as important to me as the picture...

This all depends on the DVD. If it is under 4.7gb then you can make a direct 1:1 copy of the DVD. If it is over 4.7gb (most are these days), then you have to either start cutting out extra audio tracks, subtitles, menus, extra's, etc. Basically you can choose what you want to cut out. I always keep my Dolby/DTS audio and cut out stuff until I get under the 4.7gb mark. If cutting everything out still doesn't get you under, you have to compress the video in which case you might notice a difference in video quality. All of this can be done with IfoEdit (see www.doom9.org).

Using programs like DVD2One, you don't have the option of keeping menus or extra's it will only keep the main movie (you can still choose your audio). It will then transcode the video to make it fit on a single DVD, or if your prefer, DVDXcopy will split your DVD to 2 DVD's so as not to compromise any quality.

To sum it all up, with the right tools, you can do anything, it all depends on what you want, how much time you're willing to spend in the process and how much knowledge of the DVD video world you have

I have also have a mixture of gift checks from mail in "rebate like" promotions and amex rewards checks. the amex checks specifically say they can only be used one at a time and they CANNOT be used with coupons. The other gift checks are a little more vague but do state that they can only be used by themselves(no coupons or multiple checks). So YMMV on whether you can get them to take more than one.

I'm planning to use one of my $100 amex checks in place of the 50of200 coupon so price would come down to $89.99 AR. Who knows, if i get somebody nice, I'll try to use more checks....

Thank you, that was a very good explanation I think I might plop down the case for this I'd likely strip out the menus and extras...most kiddie movies have very few and are short. I'm also planning on archiving all my home videos with a capture card to DVD, though the formatting has me a little nervous about that, but I'm sure there will be some kind of "convert x to y" format software in the future.
