My sister is starting college in a month; should we hold out and wait for a different laptop or get on this deal now?

As I generally suggest, waiting to purchase a notebook can often be a very hit or miss venture. One should purchase a machine when it is needed, and should not wait for a rock-bottom price or a soon-to-be-released feature if the machine is required at any time in the immediate future. That said, generally a notebook with similar features to these has been offered at or around this price point a majority of the past few weeks/months.

Good luck with your purchase.

For what it's worth, the Best Buy I work at said they'll be starting their "Back to School" sales drive next week. I'll bet places like Circuit City and the rest will be doing the same thing heading into September.

You might be able to find a better deal then on a laptop and accessory bundle kits and such. And you'll likely be able to get her a much better machine for the same price as that slow Toshiba 126. I would highly recommend at least an Athlon based machine with 512MB ram if she'll be using it her four years in college.

1. Celeron
2. XGA
3. PC2100
4. 256mb RAM and 64mb Shared Video RAM.

These are the reasons why I wouldn't get it.

and I know it's solely personal preference but I hate Toshiba's laptop keyboards.

Otherwise for a basic word processing/internet surfing machine, this is a VERY hot deal.

I agree but have purchased two of the BB Toshiba $499.99 specials. They were gifts and the recipients either don't mind the keyboards or haven't said anything.

Pretty much the same lappy I am on right now with a faster proc and more HD space. I like it, it does what I need and what it doesn't do, my desktop does. Good for Internet, Word, DVDs, basic stuff. Then again I only paid $550 for this so....

Out of curiosity, which laptop keyboards do you like?

I LOVE my Compaq Presario 1500T. I'm amazed that I've had it for TWO YEARS. Chances are my next laptop will be an HP ZT3000/Compaq X1000.

This isn't as hot as the deal you just returned. lol!

The differences between this model and the model you returned:

- 100MHz faster Celeron
- 20GB larger HDD
- Wireless Adapter
- $200 more
3. PC2100

These are the reasons why I wouldn't get it.
PC2100 is actually overkill for Celeron 400MHz BUS and is spec for Celeron-D and P4 533MHz BUS.

Bus Speed: 400 MHz
Memory Speed: PC2100 (266Mhz)

yea i was just going to say these specs dont match up... i guess it gives room for later upgrading. however, my last laptop being a toshiba satellite... i probably wouldnt jump on this machine even if its 500 bux. why? cuz it overheats and the constant droning fan is an annoying piece of... u know.

somebody should look for Sony A-series deals (esp. the A-190) ;-) and save me the trouble. haha.

Celeron is on a quad-pumped bus, so that 400 MHz is really an FSB of 100. It's using PC2100 DDR RAM (133/266DDR) because even the crappiest PC1600 back in the day would do PC2100, so they ended up making the PC2100 the slowest speed.

The only thing i've been waiting for on these laptops is a 60GB 7200rpm drive option. Every other vendor, including smaller ones have started shipping systems (i meant laptops) with 7.2k rpm drives. Or, am i being too optimistic about the performance difference this will make?
