Check the serial number for the warranty length.
I asked someone at CUSA to check several drives to find a 5 year warranty one.
Out of 10 they had on the shelf, only 1 was 5 years.
The 1 years all started with 3LJ0.
The 5 started with 3LJ1.

I also noticed that the sku tag (looks like a pricetag) had an extra 3 at the end on the 5 year warranty drive, but don't know it that is true for all.

The 160 and 200 GB drives I just got from Outpost.com start with 3LJ1, but the 120 starts with 5JT2. Guess I'll check at the site.

Hmm. What it says at http://www.seagate.com/support/service/warranty.html is this:

New Warranty Policy


All Seagate enterprise products (SCSI and FibreChannel interface products) ship with a 5 year limited warranty. Warranty begins on the date of shipment by Seagate.

For warranty periods on Seagate personal storage products shipped through distribution channels, click here. Warranty begins on the date of shipment by Seagate.

All Seagate retail kits (which include a box, hard drive, cables, installation guide, resource CD) have a 1 year limited warranty. For more information on retail product warranty, click here.

This does make me wonder. From the look of things, I got kits.

OK, running the SN and part number through their check I get for termination dates of warranty:

120 GB: Expiration 11-AUG-2009

160 GB: Expiration 13-AUG-2009

200 GB: Expiration 11-AUG-2009

1. What products will now carry a 5-year warranty?
All internal hard drives designed for PC?s, notebook and enterprise systems that are shipped through Seagate?s Authorized Distribution and Retail Channels.

2. To whom does the 5-year warranty apply?
The 5-year warranty applies to all customers who purchase drives either directly through Seagate (distributors), or through the Authorized Distribution channel. This includes Channel SIs, System Builders, Retail customers, and Bare drive customers who purchase through Distributors. There will be no changes to our OEM/System Manufacturer agreements that purchase product directly from Seagate.

3. What products are excluded from the new 5-year warranty?
The only products that are excluded are our retail external hard drives (external retail products, pocket drives, portable & compact flash drives). They are treated much more like a storage appliance and are used in very different operating
environments. We have a competitive one-year warranty on external drives in the Americas, and a two-year warranty in the EMEA countries.

4. Does the 5-year warranty apply to internal Retail Kit purchased after the new warranty date, even if the printed box indicates only a 3-year warranty?
Yes, if purchased after July 26, 2004 the internal products will have the 5-year warranty. Packaging reflecting the new warranty will soon be on Retail shelves. If Retail customers have questions about the warranty on their internal Retail products, the can access their warranty information at www.seagate.com.



5. Does the 5-year warranty apply to products purchased just last week?
The warranty is retroactive to all eligible drives that were purchased from Seagate after July 26, 2004.


6. What warranty period will apply to products ordered today but shipped after the new warranty date?
5 Years.

7 . Will hard drives with high capacity, SATA, or larger cache continue to offer a longer warranty than other drives?
No, all PS drives will have a 5 year warranty.

That may be what they write, but it isn't accurate, and highly open to interpretation.
It states:
5. Does the 5-year warranty apply to products purchased just last week?
The warranty is retroactive to all eligible drives that were purchased from Seagate after July 26, 2004.
You "the end user" are not purchasing anything from Seagate, you are purchasing from a retailer who purchases from Seagate.

I had several calls with Seagate support to straighten it out.
The key date in determining which warranty a drive has is the shipped-from-seagate date.
Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing this, short of trying serial numbers on their site.
You would also lose any argument with them, as the product box itself states on it 1 year warranty.

Check the serial number through their site before opening the plastic.
Whatever their site tells you is the warranty is what they are providing.
