Wireless Linksys WRTG54 router on the 2nd floor
Pc in the basement
Connected through a wireless USB network adapter
i connect, get an IP
it says the connectiong is fine and I can browse the net, log on to IM etc etc
all of a sudden my IM client logs off, i can't browse the net and basically I'm shut off the network but the connection still reports that it is connected at great quality
ipconfig /renew doesnt work (I get an error that it cant contact the DHCP server)
so i end up doing ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew
the disconnection seems to happen randomly
it'll stay up for hours and then go down 3 times in 15 minutes
any help on this would be appreciated

The most likely cause is wireless interference (usually from distance between devices, 2.4ghz cordless phones, and other wireless networks in the area). It could also be caused by failing hardware.

First, do what you can to eliminate the interference. If you have 2.4ghz cordless phones, turn them off, or move them away from your wireless networking equipment. If your neighbors have wireless networks, change the radio channel on your router to something that your neighbors aren't using. Also, if possible move your PC (or router) so that they are closer to each other and see if the connection still drops. If the connection stays stable when the devices are close together, then your configuration with the router on the second floor and the PC in the basement is just too far apart to get a stable signal.

If you still can't get a good signal when close to the router and with other wireless interference removed, then you may have a failing piece of hardware (either the router or the wireless adapter) or you might need to update the firmware on the router and the drivers for your wireless card.

thats what i thought at first too
i'll try it
the only reason i asked (and i forgot to put this in the original thread) is because i shared the pc connection thru the lan port on the pc to a hub to my xbox. my pc connection seems dead but i'm still able to go on live
so i found this thread http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=36&threadid=1513386&enterthread=y about connecting to routers. Did it, same thing happens where the pc connection goes 'dead' but xbox live still works
i'll try closing in the distance and see if that clears it up
