Dead deal!!!!! Creative Zen 20g @ J&R Music for $250 after MIR

Deal is dead!!!!!!!!J&R Music World has the Zen for $299-$50 rebate plus shipping & tx if in NY. Yes I know there was an old tread but that deal is dead. This is a Firewire model/USB1 model. They are also showing a new USB2.0 model for preorder, no rebate. This rebate is good thru J&R only. Sorry I still don't how to link! No I don't work for them, just received a great JBL center speaker from them and now am on their email list :frown:

Anyone know how one of these stacks up to an ipod? Not in terms of HD size but in terms of features. I don't really need 20GB of storage so if it's about the same size/weight/battery life and reasonably easy to navigate, it might be worthwhile.

gimpy: do a search here for "zen." There has been quite a bit of debate about it.

There's no question that the iPod wins out on size. But for functions, sound quality and value for your dollar, I'd take the Zen any day. It rocks.

Sound quality? Got a link to any side-by-side comparisons? Pretty much all these mp3 players use the same DSPs and mini-amps, so I doubt there'd be a noticeable difference.

kidsafe: They all (Zen, Ipod, Archos) use different DSP's, in fact. The Zen has the best SNR of the bunch. Do a google search on zen and ipod. Sound quality is the one category where the Zen beats the Ipod consistently.

If they were both the same price, I'm sure I would have bought the iPod. But for 1/2 the price, I'm extremely happy with the Zen. And the sound really is phenomenal.

I tried to order one right now and the website no longer have that model.

I was gonna buy it w/ my new AMEX that came in today, so I can get an extra 1 year warrenty on their cheapo 3 month one.

Main difference beside 2.0 USB only is a 14 Hour battery time vs the 12 Hour time with the Firewire!

No Rebate on this version...

I got mine by going to the B&M last Friday, the day I saw it disappear off the website. It looked as if they only had a few in stock at that point.

Well if its any consolation, I got totally screwed on the $299 10GB iPod deal last week. Both of my orders were cancelled.

They do have a warehouse in Queens, completely seperate from the Manhattan B&M, that they ship from so I don't know if I *really* got your Zen.

I picked up one of the USB 2.0 Zens at Best Buy last week. I was looking for a good external hard drive that I could play mp3's from and would fit easily in my pocket. I was debating between it and the iPod but the Zen was $200 cheaper than a 20 GB iPod and I liked the compatibility of USB 2.0. Anyway, I've had it for a week now and couldn't be disappointed more. Maybe I have a faulty Zen but the hard drive makes a horrible grinding noise from time-to-time. It randomly shuts off or skips to tracks not even on my playlist. The sound quality is not fantastic either. About the only positive thing I have to say is that the USB 2.0 transfer is lightning fast, which it should very well be. At first I thought it might be due to using it while walking to school in the cold temperatures of North Dakota (below 0 F for a high temp all week). But I have the same problems when I use it indoors too. Now like I said, I may have a faulty Zen so take my comments for what their worth. I'm taking it back.

Oxonium: You definitely got a bad unit. The sound quality on the Zen is incredible. My hard drive never makes any noise. Exchange it!!!

Just got mine. I'm going to have to clean up my ID3 tags before I dump my MP3's on the unit.

Question: the wired remote gives you live recording capabilities, right? Does it record to MP3 or WAV?
