Just return it and buy another..

For those of you saying you have no problems, are your images smooth like a CRT monitor or do you see these bars?? Look on a grey background or the standard windows blue.

I'm trying to get to the bottom of this but as-is this is going back.

I am 99.9% certain that what you are seeing is the texture of the protective screen material. Unfortunately, the plastic seems to have more texture to it than other LCD monitors I use. From what I understand, part of the reason for this is to provide anti-reflective properties. I noticed it on mine right away, but I suspect my eyes will get used to it. If you are too annoyed by this, then I guess you should return it because there is absolutely nothing you can do to "fix" it.

I have one dead pixel (off) in the lower right side about an inch and a half in and one stuck pixel (red) about a half inch inch from the bottom. Their locations are in areas that would not bother me and will rarely be seen. Someone did comment that there were some tricks to try to wake up these pixels. Can anyone elaborate?

Just got mine setup. (Replacing my 1800FP)
Quite nice. Only 1 dead pixel that I can see. (And only if I use a test screen)
I was worried about text being hard to read at 1600x1200 but surprising it is easy.
Not to mention gives me lots of real estate.
Which is nice. Mine is October build. Rev. B something...
I don't seem to have the black light issue. Well maybe a smidge but I can only see it when it is pitch black in the room.
And it is never pitch black in here. For that matter I might simply be seeing it cause I think it's there.
Either way I am quite pleased. And I imagine I will be holding on to this monitor for a long time.

It is talked about in Anandtechs LCD FAQ. I dont feel like looking for it right now. You can try to "rub out" the pixel, but I hear it is rarely sucessful and people usually end up permanantly scuffing the screen. I tried it on my GFs computer and it didnt help the pixel and instead the monitor got a dark spot for a bit. Luckily it went away.

I got my screen this morning (Monday), which is extremely impressive since I ordered last Thursday, late afternoon. I have only 2 sub-pixels, both blue. These don't bother me a single bit. They are nearly impossible to notice, even with a completely black screen. I have to be looking for them with my face just a few inches from the screen. On the back, I see October 2003 B9D, Rev A00

Now on to the not-so-good-news.:
1) I do have the bleeding white light issue on the top right of the screen, and it's noticeable during movies and any dark/black video game. My computer room is dark most of the time, so it will likely be a distraction. Generally speaking the color uniformity is not that good for an entirely black screen, but it's worst on the top right - which some people are complaining about.
2) The right side of the screen seems blurry, relative to the left. It's not extremely blurry, but it's easily noticeable when reading text from the left side of the screen to the right. This might be because I'm stuck with D-sub until I get a video card that supports DVI. The panel is sitting next to my old CRT. Can the blurriness be cause by interference? Will DVI even fix the problem?

I'm trying to decide whether to return this, but I may end up getting more dead pixels with a new panel. I have no intention of getting a refund, as the aesthetics of this monitor and color quality is excellent. I just want a panel with a uniform backlight, as few of dead pixels as possible, and without the blurry text on the right side. Would Dell consider these issues a "defect" that will let me exchange for a new panel after the 30-day satisfaction guarentee?

Greetings,

Just received my 2001FP today. No "white light" issue, but I do have one stuck red pixel just a cm from the bottom right of the screen just barely still in the WinXP task bar. It does show up in the black area when watching a DVD, but you don't notice it when you're not looking for it.

It does seem brighter than my 2000FP, which is nice. It's also much easier to position the way I want on my desk with the improved monitor stand.

My biggest gripe about the monitor other than the stuck pixel is the graininess. It's *definitely* there compared to my 2000FP. It's only horizontal, not vertical. On my Yahoo home page it's very obvious, in fact on any web page that displays large areas of the same color it's very obvious.

My eyes have gotten used to it a bit but it's still very noticable.

The jury's still out on this one. If it weren't for the grainines/stuck red pixel it'd be a definite improvement, but it seems like there's a tradeoff.

BTW, I'm running DVI with a Radeon 9700PRO. I don't think it's the cable or graphics card, I think it's the monitor, specifically the LG Philips panel they use.

Anyone solved graininess/stuck colored pixels?

Got mine.. not too shabby I say... Sure beats the 1600x1200 I had on my 1200NF. Seems to have no dead pixels or white back light. Crossing fingers it stays that way..

The grainy issue people been talking about is the pixel structure. It affects some people, others it dont. I see it on mine, but I can live with it. It's really small, but more noticeable the closer you get.. I guess I'll check out some other 1600x1200 LCDs to compare how good or bad this one is. Not that I'm not keeping this one.. it's great.

Anyone got any brand new LCD rituals? Like running it for a couple hours or days or something.. I dont wanna say burn in because that's a forsaken word around these LCDs, but I mean burn in the way you would burn in a new mobo..

<--1st time to buy anything LCD related, and later today, I'll be picking up a new card. The new card will probably be the one mentioned a few posts up.

Received mine, yesterday, Monday 12/15.

I quickly cleaned off my desk, and muscled my 17" Samsung 763MB to the side.

The first impression was that the unit felt really nice, and looked to be very high quality. The stand was nice, and the trim size around the panel wasn't overly thick. I made sure I had all the cables, and software, then proceeded to hook it all up. WOW, I never thought I would regain my desktop real estate back! Awesome! My desk looks less cluttered, and gives me more room to function.

Build Info:

-A00/October '03
-ZERO dead or stuck pixels (phew! :relief
-No backlight bleeding (yay!)

Color management switched to user preset of 50/50/50. COLORS ARE VIBRANT!

I'm currently running it in 1600x1200 on a GForce2 MX 32mb (budget card), and so far it's doing pretty well. I positively assume that it'll HAUL A$$ with whatever upgraded DVI card I pick up today.

I fired up CS 1.6 (current addiction until Steam rolled out...bleh), and it handled very well for being in 1600x12000. Just a little lag, but not enough to ruin gameplay. A new card should fix this.

I do not have the grainy issue people are talking about, and it's just as clear as it was with my .20 dpi 17" flat CRT. The LCD has an almost 3D look to it, and is kind of mezmerizing. Very pleasant on the eyes, and picture quality seems to be top notch compared to some of the display LCDs I've seen in stores. (Mainly Fry's Electronics here in Northern California.)

Pros:

-Price: Paid $811.xx shipped to my door. I ordered it through Dell's website on the 11th around 2AM in the morning, and it was delivered UPS ground on the 15h around 6PM. This is my first time dealing with Dell, and it looks like they'll have a future returning customer. I feel _I_ got a great value, and since I spend a lot of my time glued behind a keyboard, it seems to be a good investment.

-Superb picture quality. MUCH better picture than expected. 3Dish look.

-"Shock" value for the overall size of the LCD, it's quite striking to see this massive 20" LCD when you walk into the room.

-Recovered desktop space. I don't have a HUGE CRT up in my face anymore. I have the LCD pushed way back against the wall, and I have plenty room now.

-Wife's initial impressions, and overall acceptance. She used it last night after I went to bed, and was throughly impressed. No complaints, so it's a keeper.

CONS:

NONE!

But, I'm glad I waited out on the whole LCD bandwagon a few years ago. Back then, I couldn't imagine dropping $500+ on a 15" LCD. Since I waited out so long, the $811 shipped seemed reasonable for a high quality _20.1"_ considering the long hours I'l be using it. Coming from a reputable company such as Dell, I think I'll have many years of use out of this LCD.

I'll update this post when I get the new DVI connection hooked up after purchasing a new video card today. I'll try to get a few hours of gaming in on it as well.

Hope this review helps anyone considering this monitor.

This monitor is pretty durable too... Since I'm getting a replacement Dell 2001FP (because mine has 6 stuck pixels and the backlight issue), I have punched the screen, pressed very hard with my thumbs all over the screen, tried my hardest to rotate the screen the wrong way, given the hydraulic lift hell, and squeezed hard on the bezel. Besides a few finger smudges, the monitor still looks great!

I hope my replacement gets here soon

definitely nicer than the 2000FP i have

i do notice the "grainyness" but i think i can deal with that i believe it has to do with the texture of the screen

i have one stuck pixel stuck red it is only noticeable on white or green backgrounds

i do not notice any black bleeding but i won't know for sure till @ night since it is really had to control the brightness in here

Got mine today, so here's my status:

Two dead pixels, one in bottom left, one in top center. One dead blue subpixel in the bottom right. That NTest utility from Nokia that someone linked to is really useful for finding these. They're not a big problem, and unless you really press your nose to the thing, you aren't going to see them.

Text is very clear, and I don't see dithering. I'm running it with a 9800 pro and everything looks great! It's too light in my room to be able to see the light bleeding issue, but I don't see it now. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

All in all, I'm very happy with how things look! I haven't sold my 21" CRT yet, and I have to tell you that a 3200x1200 desktop rocks! I have 4 pages in Word displayed at 95%!!!

Thanks for the deal!

Has anybody noticed a difference in grey tones with this monitor? I had a Planar 1904 19" LCD and upgraded to the 2001FP. I am using the "silver" windows xp color scheme and the "storm grey" theme on this forum and everything that used to be a nice light grey color now looks beige.

Make sure you switch the color settings on the monitor to red 50/ blue 50/ green 50

Ugh. Just got mine.

I am having serious SERIOUS 2nd thoughts about this monitor.

The pathetic thing is... I already sold my widescreen SGI monitor on ebay. STUPID! STUPID!! STUPID!!!

This monitor has an absurd screen door look to it. Even viewing from 20 inches away, I can clearly see the pixel grid. With my SGI, I had to get within about 5 inches to see it.

In fact, the stupid thing is giving me a headache.

I need to try it with DVI. However, this is clearly an artifact of the panel used, NOT some sort of card issue. The only question is, will a DVI signal make me hate it less? Doubtful.

It *is* huge and very colorful... but IMO the brightness is way overplayed to help HIDE this pixel issue. However on its default brightness settings, I feel like it is going to burn my retinas out.

I'm really bummed.

I'm heading out today to finish up my holiday shopping, and I'm going to pick up a new video card for myself.

What card do you guys suggest to pair up with the 2001FP?

Go big baby!!! Get a 9800XT. No, seriously, how will you use the computer? Are you a gamer and if so, if you consider yourself in the position where you desire the latest and greatest, get the 9800XT. If not, you still have a plethora of options.

Congrats!

I have mine paired up with a 9800XT and I love it.

I couldn't see dropping $499+tax for the 9800XT, so I bought the next best! I picked up the 9600XT 128mb, and it was priced at $199+tax. I considered the 9800XT, but since it's pricey, I'll wait til it drops to at least half. Since this is my first card with DVI, when I upgrade, I'll eventually recycle it into one of my older systems. I'll probably buy a new LCD by then as well.

I briefly read reviews on both the 98, and 96, and so far it looks kick @$$!! We'll see.

Brian, rebooting after this post...
