Well, we all know which one is going to happen!

Anyway, they're obviously shipping these.

What do you think of the DVI cable (assuming it shipped with one)? I would hate to pay almost $800 for this and not get an DVI cable to hook it up to my brand new Radeon.

Is the light the backlight of the lcd? I have a sgi 1600sw, and it has a backlight feature that is adjustable. If its turned on too high, a similiar thing happens. If the dell's backlight is adjustable, try to turn it down, and see if the light goes away.

On a side note, can anyone confirm the restocking fee for SB? What about return shipping? Dell has always been known to have good cs, if something like this is the case, I really hope they come through and take all the lcds back....

I too have the whitish area in the top right hand corner of the screen...

not to mention a dead red sub-pixel smack in the middle of the screen.

I'm a little disappointed

That sux. Maybe i should really reject the shipment when it comes.
There's no way I'd spend 800 bux on a LCD monitor like that.

For those who have received their orders, what is the quality of the panel. Any dead pixels? For me dead pixels are very annoying once you know they are there. I am trying to find a reason not to put down $750.

I ordered mine on 12/5 - got it yesterday.

maybe not all panles exhibit this.

I just loaded up my Body Shots DVD, and set it to full screen. I've circled the part that I'm talking about, which is more pronounced than is really pictured, which is due to it being hard to take a picture of.

Also, I got my friend who is having the exact same problem with the exact same monitor as I pointed out above to try and take a picture of his as well.

As soon as I get finished with my tests, Dell is going to have an extremely unhappy customer on the phone.

Thx for posting those pics, they made up my mind for me. Sorry to see that you got a bum monitor..although it seems to be the trend for this particular model

That bright white light that's coming from the top right-hand corner is called backlight leakage. It usually occurs when the backlight of the LCD screen is too bright and from what I've read and heard, all LCD monitors exhibit this to a certain degree, albeit some worse than others. My ViewSonic VP171b seems to have a particularly bad case of backlight leakage, as I see half-circles of white light emanating from all sides of the panel. It is most noticeable on a dark background and is extremely annoying. I don't recall it being a problem when I first got this monitor about six months ago. Is anyone else with VP171b experiencing the same bad backlight leakage problems as I am? I wonder if ViewSonic customer support would do anything about it if I emailed them. I guess I'll give it a shot and see what they say.

I also ordered on Saturday and have the same late shipping/delivery dates as you. How can it be that those that ordered later are getting their monitors earlier?

I can't seem to access those pictures above to compare. Mine had no dead pixels at all, and I hadn't noticed anything wrong with it at all. After reading the above issue, I looked at mine last night and I do notice a bit of lighter area in the top right 1/3 of the screen. You don't notice it unless the whole screen is dark, but I set my windows background to black and it is slightly noticeable then.

I wonder what others production dates are on the monitor. Mine said Sept. 2003, which surprised me a bit that it was made that long ago.

I'm such a perfectionist I'm worrying now that I've noticed it that it will bother me. ARGH - ignorance WAS bliss

It's strange to me that Anand's review didn't make light (no pun intended) of this "deficency."

Seems maybe some buyers remorse....just an opinion/observation.

wasn't anand's a pre-production model? people (myself included) probably assumed they had fixed the issue.

Well, without seeing the backlight issue in person, I guess I still don't know if the 2001FP is for me or not. But I also have an SGI and have noticed similar behavior in the past - so not sure if it would be a deal breaker for me. (since IMO the SGI is an awesome, awesome display... I just want something bigger)

Would definitely appreciate more photos and opinions from people who have gotten their monitors!

I received my monitor yesterday (upgraded from the 2000fp). I have not noticed any white spot and I do not think I have seen any dead pixels. I have not used it extensively however and will post if I find otherwise. The monitor does look grainy as someone said before, and pixels are more visible. I think my eyes adjusted to this pretty quickly however and it was unnoticeable.

So far, it appears to be a massive upgrade from the 2000fp. I hope not to find out otherwise.

ok, what's up with this grainy thing everyone's talking about?

compared to a high end laptop LCD screen and this screen, which would you say is more grainy?

Sorry if some people got bad displays - but I guess that's what the 30 day satifaction guarantee is good for right??

I have set up in excess of 50 Dell LCDs (mostly smaller 15 and 17" but some where 19 and 20") and I must say that I am impressed with the quality as well as the great consistancy with which they seem to produce these. Out of all of these displays there was only one that had one dead subpixel and it was not annoying enough to send it back. I also installed other similar priced brands (MAG, Envision, Viewsonic). Even though those were much fewer units installed I have seen dead pixels on them more frequently than on all the Dells together.

So yes I guess if you get a bad one it's bad luck but hey that can happen - just send it back.

Another note: All Dell monitors with DVI input so far came with the DVI and a VGA cable.

bump for my edit of my original post .. this one is going back to Dell. Manufactured September 2003.

edit:

To really check out your screen .. make an all black background. I initially didn't see these problems with my regular desktop.

I hope that my monitor is similar to yours (defect free) as I also received my monitor on Monday. My wife said that the monitor came on Monday around noon and I left for a business meeting Monday at 10:00 AM. I ordered my monitor on the evening of 12/3 and it shipped on 12/4. I really hope I got a good one. Unfortunately I have to wait until Friday to test it.

I just got mine and have it hooked up to my laptop here at work. Comparing it to my laptop display (laptop is a Dell M40 with WUXGA display??? 1600x1200 at any rate.) Anyways, granted I'm using the VGA out of the laptop as well, this isnt the best comparison. I definatly see what people are talking about when they say the screen is grainey, but I dont see it as something that bothers me. I have to look closely at something to notice it, and even then its minor IMO. I havent noticed the lightness in the upper right yet, will have to do that later tonight. All else seems to be great with this thing. I'll get some pics of it with my digicam later tonight with both displays on with the same signal if people want to see that. I am happy so far...
